@gruber iOS developer beta 2 has done something funky to Daring Fireball logo (unless you did it).

This is on iPad mini:

I can build Dice by PCalc as a native Reality OS app, but there isn't a way to draw the dice with depth unless I replace all the SceneKit rendering with RealityKit, as expected.

But, at least there is a route forwards, and I can relatively easily make it feel more native by moving the controls into ornaments outside the window, etc.

kevin,
@kevin@elephant.crime.group avatar

@jamesthomson can’t wait for you to be able to make it so real I’m chasing dice under the couch or refrigerator again.

By my reckoning Apple has 2 major foundation technologies having trans women central to their development.

The ARM processor, core of Apple Silicon chips, co-developed by Sophie WIlson (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sophie_Wilson)

Safari/Webkit - not just foundational to Apple but was the foundation of Google's Chrome (and via Chrome, Microsoft's Edge) browser - led by @lisamelton. Congratulations.

I'm sure there are many other trans people central to tech that I'm simply unaware of, we need them all.

@KvanH FYI, there is now a proper Cuban place in KC: La Cubana.

@bynkii oh sweet, and it's pretty close to me too. Have to give it a try.

@bynkii excellent

When I was a teen, real men had Sherwood Stereo receivers, Revox reel-to reel tape recorders, and Advent speakers the size of old steamer trunks. Today I listen to Adele, or old Dr. Hook classics on YouTube using 2 watt laptop speakers with the frequency response range of a geriatric parrot.

kevin,
@kevin@elephant.crime.group avatar

@shoq ahh, that reminds me of the Lafayette LR-1000TA my dad used and I've inherited (but not set up yet).

I wish everyone who is not comfortable using a computer knew how often I, a programmer of 26 years with a degree in computer science, turn my machine off and then on again to fix problems.

kevin,

@seldo "Oh I should reboot my computer I haven't done that in a couple of weeks" -- me a few ago, the same me who has been in computer support over 30 years.

If you want to buy a Vision Pro in 6 months you need to save $583.33 a month starting now. Ouch.

Reading Vision Pro hit takes and noting that nothing/very little has been said so far about how it’s used with eyeglasses.

Will EVERY eyeglass wearer have to get inserts or will some be able to use it WITH their eyeglasses? Note that Apple didn’t show anyone who wore glasses using them.

I imagine it’s a clunky experience to be taking your glasses on and off to use VP…

kevin,
@kevin@elephant.crime.group avatar

@gedeonm @KingShawn you know you're going to have to pay extra for those inserts too. Hopefully not $400 wheels expensive but I bet at least $200.

kevin,
@kevin@elephant.crime.group avatar

@gedeonm @KingShawn inserts attach magnetically, I assumed so they could be removed pretty easily. I can already see a 3rd part case for holding all the inserts for different family members.

Vibe check: how did you beta updates go so far?

kevin,
@kevin@elephant.crime.group avatar

@simonbs @Migueldeicaza great for me too, haven't done Mac yet, but iPad, phone and watch smooth. Watch probably glitchiest but it has biggest changes, no crashes.

kevin,
@kevin@elephant.crime.group avatar

@Migueldeicaza @esummers @simonbs I'm not seeing that either. Lots of small UI glitches like not being able to swipe between watch faces. And touch targets that are noticeably off.

Phone did refuse to airplay through my not-on-beta HomePod until I rebooted the phone.

Battery drain is horrific, worse I can remember a beta being. I have to charge my Ultra watch daily when I use to go almost 72 hours. Phone and iPad are similar.

Is it just my imagination or did Apple not say how much the Vision Por actually weighs?

kevin,
@kevin@elephant.crime.group avatar

@KingShawn I looked for that yesterday and couldn't find it

kevin,
@kevin@elephant.crime.group avatar

@KingShawn yeah, they were fairly vague about resolution too.

Maybe I'm expecting too much out of a nascent tech that won't be available until early next year. But I'm still waiting for Apple to show me the one use for that I can't do with a Microsoft HoloLens or Meta Quest 2/3.

kevin,
@kevin@elephant.crime.group avatar

@flargh I think this is why Apple had to ship. Rarely does the "killer app" ship with the product but instead comes from actual users. I suspect these won't have new use cases for a few years.

Also does he have to change Mastodon instances now? :)

On the one hand, OMG WTF, it was a horrendous series of misjudgments for a lawyer to rely on ChatGPT to write their brief, including citations.

On the other hand, this is another example of widespread confusion about what, exactly, ChatGPT does—confusion that OpenAI promotes.

It's Spicy Autocomplete. That's it. It verifies nothing. It spits out words based on opaque calculations.

kevin,
@kevin@elephant.crime.group avatar

@jeffjarvis @maxkennerly I believe opposing counsel filed a brief with the court saying they couldn’t find any of the cases cited and that’s when the court asked for copies.

kevin,
@kevin@elephant.crime.group avatar

@jeffjarvis @maxkennerly The doc with the bogus cites was filed March 1st (Mata v. Avianca, Inc., 1:22-cv-01461, (S.D.N.Y. Mar 01, 2023) ECF No. 21)

Defendents filed a brief March 15th that said "...
Plaintiff ... cites to a variety of cases in opposition to this motion, the undersigned has been
unable to locate"
Mata v. Avianca, Inc., 1:22-cv-01461, (S.D.N.Y. Mar 15, 2023) ECF No. 24

Judge requires docs on April 18 (Mata v. Avianca, Inc., 1:22-cv-01461, (S.D.N.Y. Apr 11, 2023) ECF No. 25)

kevin,
@kevin@elephant.crime.group avatar

@jeffjarvis @maxkennerly wooo! I was right in the internet! I didn’t mean to be pushy but I thought this was a good example of how the system is supposed to work and the advantage of an adversarial system. Thanks
