In the huge shakeout of big box retail to Internet sales, plus surviving Covid, I think the survival of Micro Center goes unremarked even though they switched from your basic big box store to effectively a giant RadioShack. That’s a business story I’d find interesting.

“I know, I’ll write that shortcut I’ve been thinking about”.

5 shortcuts later I can pull data from weather app, habit app, to-do app and calendar, build a big ‘ole “here’s your day, now get to it!” report and dump it all into a daily note in Obsidian.

Weather app => Carrot Weather
Habit app => Streaks
To-do app => OmniFocus
Calendar app => Fantastical

kevin,
@kevin@elephant.crime.group avatar

Fantastical was the trickiest, but if I want access to my work calendar I have to use it (last I checked Apple Calendar supports Exchange but not Office 365 Outlook).

Fantastical doesn’t have a “Find Event” action. Instead I use Show Schedule to get events for a date and loop through the days I want.

kevin,
@kevin@elephant.crime.group avatar

@bynkii calendar hosted on Microsoft’s hosting or your own? I can’t remember if it was that or the multi-factor authentication that broke calendar.

I’ll have to try again.

Heads up . The Cherry Street Bridge is up, closed to all traffic, and fenced off for some reason. You've got to detour all the way back to Leslie if you're coming at it from the South side. It was open yesterday and I can't find any info as to why it's closed or for how long 🤷

UPDATE: It's closed due to a mechanical issue. https://xim.ca/notes/9sqpd2qwerb4l4wr Thanks, @alex

The argument that Trump doesn't have enough cash to pay his fraud penalty is garbage.
He turned his ill-gotten gains into real estate assets. What if he had turned them into artworks or crypto or gold bars? Liquidate those assets and make him cough it up. It shouldn't matter where or how he's hidden his money.

I'm sure I've gone through multiple times to give them the most permissive possible licenses, but either it doesn't stick or I screw up with the obtuse site.

Use the images how you like, just don't claim directly that you made them is as much a license as I use.

LOL, people are discovering InTune, Microsoft’s MDM, isn’t supported on ACP so many business users can’t use Microsoft’s native Teams/Word/Excel on it. And they’re leaving reviews.

I'D JUST LIKE TO INTERJECT FOR A MOMENT. WHAT YOU'RE REFERRING TO AS LINUX IS IN FACT GNU/LINUX, OR AS I'VE RECENTLY TAKEN TO CALLING IT, GNU + LINUX. LINUX IS NOT AN OPERATING SYSTEM UNTO ITSELF, BUT RATHER ANOTHER FREE COMPONENT OF A FULLY FUNCTIONING GNU SYSTEM

kevin,
@kevin@elephant.crime.group avatar

@ian @anildash this is also why they don't call it GNU + EMACS as emacs is an operating system unto itself.

So Microsoft has native Vision Pro version of Teams, but they don't allow InTune to be installed on Vision Pro so I can't login to it. LOL.

@glennf @thomasfuchs @mwichary LOL, Sunday UPS told me I had a delivery on Monday and showed the item leaving Kentucky (I'm in MO so short trip). All day Monday it showed delivery noon-4pm Monday but no arrival scan at KC depot. Finally at 5pm they updated it with a scan that it just left Kentucky for reals this time.

I suspect VR headset manufacturers with pass-through capabilities are going to have to try find ways to minimize or ideally prevent drivers wearing them while driving. It's not going to be easy to do this while not preventing passengers from wearing them, but the specter of a driver going literally blind instantly when a headset crashes or pass-through is otherwise disabled is nightmarish.

kevin,
@kevin@elephant.crime.group avatar

@cstross @lauren It's perfectly safe to drive with a jacket draped over a steering wheel, right?

Will there be more third-party apps on day one of the visionOS App Store than day one of the iOS App Store (about 500)?

My gut says yes, because there are just so many more developers out there now, but I don't know exactly how much money I would be willing to wager on it!

(EDIT: Excluding existing apps running in compatibility mode, obviously)

kevin,
@kevin@elephant.crime.group avatar

@jamesthomson are you including developers that let their ipad app work, or just native vision os?

@thomasfuchs my first desktop pc at my current company (25+ years ago) was over $20,000. About 50% of that was because it, and the monitor, had Intergraph on the case.

I wonder if Apple will reprise those Timex ads from the 70’s (“Takes a licking and keeps on ticking”, highlighting watches that survived improbably harsh accidents).

It’s no more security by obscurity than a Windows malware executable not working on Linux or macOS is.

It’s security by avoiding a monoculture, something farmers figured out millennia ago, a thing tech refuses to embrace, in spite of the pain monocultures cause them.

kevin,
@kevin@elephant.crime.group avatar

@bynkii I mean that is supposed to be one of the goals of decentralization, which so many techbros espouse, but then they turn around and throw a shit fit if you don't do exactly what they do.

Can any Apple-savvy folks tell me why iTunes is now dividing my albums up into 2 and 3 partial collections instead of just 1 album, and how to make it stop doing that? It’s annoying.

kevin,
@kevin@elephant.crime.group avatar

@adhdeanasl Apple Music streaming stuff or your own tracks? For your own tracks it’s almost always some fubar metadata differences. I go through and copy and paste the Album name & artist name into each track (even if they look identical) then make sure things like CD # of # are the same in each.

A concept I’m noodling around with for my How Comics Were Made book that may become a core part of it: Until cartoonists began creating cartoons digitally with unlimited colors (within CMYK), there was no absolutely notion of a comic’s “true” color. Through the 1990s, comic strips were black and white art with added color, almost always for Sundays. Cartoonists used a restricted palette of colors & only saw the “real” color if they grabbed a newspaper that Sunday.

kevin,
@kevin@elephant.crime.group avatar

@glennf were the colors consistent between papers in different cities?

Well this is dumb: “The Performance cores (and thus single-core performance) is higher almost entirely due to those higher clocks rather than architectural changes”

Pretty sure those architectural changes are WHY they could bump up the clock speed. If it was something they could just dial up they would’ve done it in the M1 & M2.
