Halo 3 multiplayer had a fantastic feature where you could play back games in 3D, fly around get a better idea of what happened and make clips and share them. Have other games had that? Would be cool in Apex Legends for example

@kieranmcguire@hachyderm.io avatar

@joelanman Overwatch 2 has replays you can fly around in, but it only gives you your ‘highlight’ as a clip. Wish it let you choose clip to whatever you want, that sounds much better!

@404mediaco hey, if you add the "https://" part to your website link in your bio it will:

  1. work properly as a link, and
  2. show the green 'verified' highlight.

It looks like that's what you're after as the link in your site footer has the rel="me" attribute, it's just not doing anything atm.

has a data quality problem. Specifically: duplication. Not just of authors, but of the books themselves. Most of the books in this screenshot should be editions/versions of the same book. This is not an uncommon occurrence.

I don't think the story about taking down npm (at christmas when staff were away) by making a package that installs everything is cute at all. Seems clearly trollish, you really wouldn't know that that could cause issues? Come on

kieranmcguire,
@kieranmcguire@hachyderm.io avatar

@joelanman if I'm going to run an experiment that involves trying to install every available package from the largest package management platform on the internet, I too would do checks notes absolutely no research.

The platform risks/flaws that are the one lesson from this could have been determined from a bit of forethought and explained in a brief blog post. Instead, chaos. Great!

Remembering the time when someone had their browser zoomed out accidentally, and complained on Twitter that on GOV.UK we'd broken responsive design. Then people who should know better started saying that clearly all the good people had left GOV.UK since we'd broken it. Bizarre.

Given the climate crisis, do we really need bad code slash fake news generators this much?

@joelanman THIS × a million. It turns out that caring about quality and accuracy is more individually subjective than expected... but is it really worth the energy and water cost to generate a few paragraphs so someone doesn't have to think a bit? Or an image, so they don't have to pay an artist whose work it's based on? (Cough stolen from cough)

ok, trying SendGrid now, and their Node instructions start:

Make sure you have the prerequisites
Our library requires Node.js version 0.10, 0.12, or 4.

Node 4 came out in 2015 and is long out of support, the current version is 21

So weird, doesn't give me confidence at all

@joelanman can I ask you a question about the GOV.UK Design System? Specifically about links that look like buttons. (You can say no!)

kieranmcguire,
@kieranmcguire@hachyderm.io avatar

@joelanman thank you! We're looking at the topic of links-styled-like-buttons as 'primary calls-to-action' ourselves. Personally, I'd prefer the semantic separation of links and buttons, but it's undeniably a common practice. We found the discussion at https://github.com/alphagov/govuk-design-system/issues/1185, and I'm wondering if the internal team's thinking had settled in the time since that issue was opened?

I see plenty of links-styled-like-buttons in GOV.UK services, but it's not mentioned in link styles or as a component.

kieranmcguire,
@kieranmcguire@hachyderm.io avatar

@joelanman scratch that last part - it IS mentioned as a 'Start now' variant of the button!

Do you know if any special effort or consideration was needed to make it equally accessible and consistent?

kieranmcguire,
@kieranmcguire@hachyderm.io avatar

@joelanman thank you! That was the impression I got from the issue, just wanted to double-check as it is still 'Open'... And it is definitely one of those questions that could go round for a very long time! Appreciate your experience and advice 🙂

kieranmcguire,
@kieranmcguire@hachyderm.io avatar

@joelanman I think that's true for us too, as well as finding pages with half a dozen 'primary' CTAs on them...

One more problem we've become aware of is that, for users who like to zoom in a lot (to reduce the amount of stuff competing for their attention), buttons with more text in them (ours, at least) overflow off the side of the screen, rather than onto a second line... TBH I'm not sure what a two-line button would look like 🤔, but that's a problem a regular ol' text link doesn't have!
