I have been spending entirely too much mental energy trying to figure out why my #uucp connections to my own computers don't want to work.
I already managed to mesh with another person's systems, so I really don't know what the issue is... besides using uucp in the first place.
if there's one thing I miss of the early net it's the way people just put their random shit and fun comments ideas in a textfile and saved it for public consumption somewhere.
there's still a few archives around (e.g. textfiles.com), but new stuff isn't really added anymore
and it's a pity. sometimes I think it would be great to see some insightful blog post or random reddit comment boiled down to it's essentials and saved somewhere
I remember all the times when I encountered some stupid but amazing ideas when trawling old download sites
Having massively over-promised on an immature technology with really quite a limited range of productive use-cases, #AI firms are now contriving to deliver.
However, because there is no tangible product, they are using their financial might and institutional power to bludgeon the Internet and society as a whole into an AI-shaped hole.
It's like a company that makes anti-diarrhoea meds pumping laxatives into the water-supply to engineer enough demand to justify billion of investment.
@Taskerland@Printdevil@vdonnut it's literally the next bubble. All the crypto people are struggling now because they still haven't found anything to use their fancy gadget with, and people already moved on to cooing about AI without having anything to really do with it, and even AI is slowing down now. I wonder what the next bubble will be.
Had to sit through a stupid presentation at work lately that talked very much about nothing at all trying to sell us on AI in the product we are using.
@hypnogoria "Corman was reportedly inspired to make the film by the production of The Vikings (1958). He felt if he made the movie fast enough he could have it in cinemas before that movie and take advantage of publicity for the bigger budgeted film."
On a children's birthday right now, but sitting on the side, puzzled about my home server.
Why can't I connect to it?
I'd assume it's down, but it isn't. Can't ssh to it, ping times out, traceroute doesn't work, webpages aren't served. But the other irc server connected to mine still sees it, the bouncer, and the bots, so these still work...
And they still are connected to the net because I just got a response from one.
@Teyrnon I bet it happened more often than once. I had multiple calls like that when I was working service desk, some of them with rather impressive titles.
(but to be fair it was a bank, they might have done their PhD in Economics, or as I like to call it Capitalist theology)
@Teyrnon that said we also had a few of our special users that were a special hassle to deal with. the straws were drawn for us though, calls got randomly assigned.
(or at least they should have been, we often suspected that a caller would get shifted back to our number if they were calling back the same day)
@jabsonik Jabeerwocky in ulica Traugutta seems to be popular lately. There's also Browar Księży Młyn, but I haven't been in there, but it looks nice from outside.
Czesky Film used to have Klezmer music on some evenings.
Manufaktura has a lot of happenings all the time (just yesterday they had a Cuban music festival)
For most things you will have to look at Pietrkowska, that's the entertainment mile. And in August I think there's gonna be lots of stuff happening in the evenings.
