I'm sad to learn Gordon Bell passed away on May 17th.

The PDP-10 family was cancelled 41 years ago at DECUS.

What would you consider as the most recognizable bitmap fonts in tech history?

I’m imagining stuff like:

  • the arcade/Atari font
  • Chicago (Mac, then iPod)
  • VCR/video equipment fonts
  • Minecraft font
  • IBM PC fonts (MDA, VGA, stuff like that)
  • perhaps System font from Windows 3.x
  • Commodore 64, just because of the sheer popularity of the machine

What am I missing?

@mwichary For a small, but illustrious, set of people, the XGP fonts are probably etched into their memory. The XGP printer was made at Xerox PARC and distributes to handful of academic and research institutes in the early 70s. Many computer science and artificial intelligence papers and theses were printed on the XGP. The fonts were jointly maintained between MIT, CMU, Stanford, ISI, etc.

When Xerox PARC was refused a PDP-10 from the competitor DEC, the researchers built their own clone. 46 years ago, their 𝘴𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘥 clone went online on the ARPA network.

@leah That's a good analogy! Kind of copied with some alterations.

57 years ago, MIT students arranged the Great Subway Race. Peter Samson computed the itinerary using LISP running on the AI lab PDP-6.

I know I really should prefer ARM given that it was designed by My People, but I just can't help it:
My favorite processor is 32bit x86

@loke @retrotechtive @foone Using moveq to d6 would be nice, but you really must fix the stack pointer adjustment instruction.

You've heard of C++ smart pointer classes, e.g. unique_ptr, shared_ptr, and weak_ptr?
Well, I've just implemented a new C++ dumb pointer class, which I call leak_ptr. Maybe it should be standardized. I could probably have a proposal ready for submission to WG21 by the first.

@brouhaha Next up: strong_ptr.

46 years ago, Multics Emacs was started.

I'd like to seize this opportunity to correct a persistent rumor that Multics Emacs was the first Emacs written in Lisp. EINE predates it by about a year.

It's fascinating that the experience of using computer CLIs (Command Line Interfaces) has essentially changed not at all since the early days of interactive computing and timesharing. In fact, for those of us using Linux systems, the experience is pretty much identical to what it was on the earliest UNIX systems of the 1970s, and in fact we still commonly use the same commands, utilities, and other command line tools. So about half a century. That's either amazing or terrifying depending on your point of view. Or more likely, both.

@lauren @cstross @trouble The name of ITS is a pun, and so is many other things in the system. It doesn't take itself overly seriously.

New file just released to me, the subject is ARPANET in 1983. Will get it up on archive.org tomorrow.

@realhackhistory Geez, those BBS messages are really innocent. Call a public phone number and enter some TIP commands. Not much of a "penetration" of the ARPANET.
