I am almost finished with this week's blog post.

Meanwhile, my 3-year old neice (grand niece? what do I call my niece's daughter?) taught me to play hide and seek.

Here's how:

💠 I tell her where I'll hide.
💠She closes her eyes and counts to 10.
💠When she reaches 10, she opens her eyes and looks for me.
💠It does't take long to find me.
💠Then we laugh.

I suspect I am supposed to tell her where I will hide so she doesn't feel scared when she opens her eyes and doesn't see me.

@Teri_Kanefield I called my mother's aunt great-aunt, so I guess great-niece?

Today i did a post about climate change and - unusually for me here on Mastodon - got a couple of troll replies, dismissing climate science.

What i find so staggering: these guys seem to seriously think they ar cleverer than all climate scientists together. What does it feel like to be that kind of person? To really think that? It’s sort of unfathomable to me.

@pvonhellermannn it's like those men who think they would be able to win a point off someone like Serena Williams (when she was playing at her peak).

Today is the Country Overshoot Day for the US; tomorrow it's the Country Overshoot Day for Canada. The world can't afford to keep using resources this way.

Anyone got a computer mic that they like? My Blue Snowball has been great, but I admit this is the second time I’ve glued it back together 😅 Was thinking about getting a mic that clips onto my desk and drops down over my screen, or just getting a headset. Main use is zoom/teams (meetings and talks), chatting with family and recording voiceovers. I don’t wait to pay loads, but prepared to pay above the bottom for noticeable boost in quality.

@laurendw@mastodon.social avatar

@elizabethtasker I got one of these: https://www.shure.com/en-US/products/microphones/mv51 and it's great. Not cheap, but strong, well put together, different modes.

i had my (realising i needed to really act about climate) in Feb 2019 and have tried so many different things since. But right now, for the first time, I feel completely “spent”. Obviously hasn’t gone away; it’s more my own issues (mostly i think debilitating sense of guilt and hypocrisy). Have any of you ever had these points, and how did you work your way out again? Or anyone feeling this just now, too?

laurendw,
@laurendw@mastodon.social avatar

@pvonhellermannn Lots of us are feeling this. When I'm down, I look at my garden, full of wildflowers planted for the bees, and the hummingbird feeder that's used multiple times a day. That's not enough, but it isn't nothing either.

Wondering about Long Covid (or Post-Covid Syndrome).
Do you know people who are suffering significantly as follows? (This is a multiple-choice poll.)

(pls boost if the subject interests you)

laurendw,
@laurendw@mastodon.social avatar

@geographile @josh @timbray Or they're not admitting it to other people, or even themselves. "I've just had this lingering cough for months now, and somehow I get tired so much more easily, and I keep forgetting things" etc.

"What's the alternative to murder offsets/carbon credits? We could ask our expert regulators to decide which carbon intensive activities are necessary and which ones aren't, and ban the unnecessary ones. We could ask those regulators to devise remediation programs that actually work."

Another excellent piece by Cory Doctorow @pluralistic

(Yes, read it all. It's worth it.)

Serious question… why is buying a particular issue of a digital magazine or newspaper not a thing?

Like if I wanted to read just one particular article in paper form I could go to the store and buy only that one issue. But online I have to either deal with a paywall or sign up for a full subscription?

Why??

laurendw,
@laurendw@mastodon.social avatar

@mariyadelano Crafting magazines (knitting, weaving, etc) all allow you to do this and have for years. They prefer a subscription, but will cheerfully sell you a single issue as well.

Reflections during cinema visit ( and many trailers):

What does it say about us as a society that one of the things we are most scared about is superior intelligence?

I personally am less worried about artificial intelligence than human stupidity.

laurendw,
@laurendw@mastodon.social avatar

@pvonhellermannn too many of the people who are said to have high intelligence have too little compassion for or empathy with others; the assumption is that superior intelligence will have no compassion for lesser folk.

laurendw,
@laurendw@mastodon.social avatar

@pvonhellermannn in my experience it's like anything else, intelligence and compassion are semi-independent traits. But in popular culture and films it's different, with the trope of the nerdy scientist who doesn't care about people.

We should do this in Canada too: https://cleantechnica.com/2023/02/09/new-law-50-solar-power-over-parking-lots-in-france/

France ... requires that that large parking lots have at least 50% of their lot covered in solar canopies.

TL;DR - this isn't over, despite what governments are telling you.

[ordered some, will order more, want to always have the next book ready - thanks!]

Help.

I need books to read to my daughter (9).

She suggests Famous Five but I would like something with a bit more modern "mindset" than the girls always helping in the kitchen and the boys in the barn.

Ideas?

Also, thanks for boosts as my bubble is German speaking.

Also, wow! boost some of those good answers from the community... wow! ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Hey, Canadians, potentially good news: https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/tax-filing-deadline-1.6825841

(I just helped my 16-year-old with their first tax return, what a PITA, since there were only 4 relevant numbers, all displayed on their T4 from their summer job.)

laurendw,
@laurendw@mastodon.social avatar

@timbray It's about time Canada joined other countries in doing this. A good basic potential model is one where you only need to file as an individual if you have extra deductions or untaxed income, which is not the case for many salary earners.
