    The removal of the tomatoes from the greenhouse benches gives us room to get the first planting of sweetcorn (Flagler) started. We put 5 seeds to a pot and 32 pots make a row. Once those are big enough and the weather warm enough they will get set out in to a row and another planting will be started. We try to have 2 weeks between plantings to extend the season. Last year we brought ~ 230 ears of corn to the table.

    @richrollgardener May I ask why you hill them? @Engelsbaeckerei I too have troubles growing corn, even through in plant it in blocks. But I think my site is too windy and my soil still too poor. So the corn does poorly, too. I'm not giving up though.

    @richrollgardener Hm, never heard of that. Potatoes grow below ground and their tubers need to be kept away from light to not develop toxic solanin. Hence, the hilling. But corn grows above ground and doesn't mind the open nuclear fusion in the sky at all. But yeah, giving the plants more grip and soil to root into might be worth a try. Firstly, I think, I have to improve my soil. Corn is a heavy feeder. And my sandy acidic soil is not helpful in that respect. @Engelsbaeckerei

    Help! My herbs are growing mushrooms!

    I noticed some of the compost in a few of the herb pots was raised today. Assumed they'd been nudged accidentally or the cat had investigated. But this evening I noticed a pale yellowish lump in one and it's a mushroom! There's one in another too.

    I did not plant mushrooms. Wtf? Can I eat them? How did this happen?

    @alexisbushnell First, do not eat mushrooms that you cannot identify as edible with absolute certainty! Secondly, mushrooms multiply through spores and mycelium. The stuff we see above ground is just the fruiting body, i.e. the visible part of the fungus. The mycelium roots its way through the entire medium below ground long before the fruiting body appears. It is likely that it was in the compost already. You probably did not sterilize the compost before sowing. So stuff lives in it. 1/

    @alexisbushnell Microbes living in your compost is not necessarily a bad thing. Actually, bacteria and fungi are quite helpful in the decomposition process. They break the dead organic material down and make the inherent nutrients plant available. Without soil microbes plants would fully depend on artificial fertilizers. You want living soil in your garden. And some gardeners even introduce beneficial soil microbes like bacteria and funghi into their soils by inoculating it pro-actively. 2/

    @alexisbushnell That said, having funghi that grow big mushrooms or viable weed seeds in your sowing mix can be disadvantageous for your young seedlings. They might not be able to compete for light, water or nutrients with the weeds or mushrooms and grow poorly. Soil diruption can also cause them to lose contact with the growing medium, so they dry out. Therefore I would recommend to sterelize your sowing mix, e.g. by heating it in the oven or by steaming, esp. if your seeds are very small. 3/3

    Everyone is talking about this NPR story about USDA hardiness zones shifting. It's a great story and the shift is real and it's evidence-based. But a couple things about USDA zones:
    It's based only on the minimum winter temperatures and nothing else. For example my new zone is 9a, which is the same as a lot of Georgia. My climate is nothing like Georgia except for this one statistic.

    I know many people find that Xitter has become an unreadable grifter nazi hell hole, but I just looked at my timeline over there, the "Following" one, and it was so full with beautiful that I got sad. Filling my feed with just a shitload of amazing art from past and present is one of the things I have not been able to recreate over here, not nearly to the same degree. And yes I know about the relevant hashtags and art focused servers and all that.

    @memo Hm, ich weiß, was er meint. Aber gerade am Himmel gibt es doch deutliche Unterschiede zwischen Ost und West. Allein die Frage, wo die Sonne auf- und wo sie untergeht, ist seit Jahrhunderten wichtig für die Menschen. Und da haben wir den Sternenhimmel noch gar nicht betrachtet.

    At work we've just begun migrating a few thousand workloads to a new datacenter facility and besides that I'm barely using computers right now. These time-outs just come and go. Meanwhile I leased a 500m² garden and cheerfully dig into this shit. And of course the roof of the summer house there is leaky.. 😉 So.. don't mind me not reacting to your comments and new followings, I'm just outside wearing my straw hat! 🙃

    Heute Nachmittag war Pflanzzeit im :
    Vier haben ein neues Zuhause vorm Zaun, geschützt durch einen Schneckenkragen und gemulcht mit , das ich am Donnerstag von ganz lieben Gästen geschenkt bekam.
    Endlich, endlich hatte ich Zeit, einige ins Gewächshaus zu pflanzen und auch das ist dort eingezogen. Nun fehlen nur noch etwa 30 weitere Tomaten, die umgepflanzt werden möchten. 🥰
    Wie läuft's bei Euch, liebe Gartenfreund*innen?

    Ein Blick auf eins der Beete in meinem Gewächshaus sowie viele Jungpflanzen in Töpfen, die darauf warten, umgetopft zu werden: Tomaten unterschiedlichster Art. Im Beet wachsen fünf Sorten Tomaten, eine Paprika, Basilikum, Koriander, Petersilie, Borretsch, Salat und Knoblauch.

    @Engelsbaeckerei Noch trage ich die Nachtschatten, Gurken und Kürbisse täglich raus und rein. Letzte Nacht hatten wir noch Temperaturen unter 9°C. Aber dieses Wochenende kommen sie in die Erde. Ebenso die Süßkartoffeln, Ingwer, Galgant, Kurkuma und, Novum im Garten, Zitronengras. Die Früh- und Lagerkartoffeln sind schon eine Weile in den Kübeln. Der Sellerie kam letztes Wochenende ins Beet. Salate, Kräuter, Kohl und Gemüse säe und pflanze ich schon kontinuierlich seit Februar. Ernte seit April.

    @Engelsbaeckerei Oh, Mais und Bohnen hab ich auch letztes Wochenende gepflanzt, bzw. gesät. Erbsen kontinuierlich seit März und die Ackerbohnen stehen in voller Blüte. Topinambur steckt seinen Kopf aus den Kübeln und ein paar besondere Sonnenblumen hab ich gepflanzt. Aber es keimen auch erste Voluntärpflanzen. Die Akeleien blühen und Kirschen, Pflaumen, Äpfel und Birnen sind schon wieder durch mit der Blüte. Ich mußte schon wieder viel gießen, weil es zwischenzeitlich sehr trocken war.

    @Engelsbaeckerei Sie kommen, genau wie die Kartoffeln, mit Kompost in 40L HDPE Kübel, in die ich unten Löcher gebohrt habe. Das hat sich bewährt. Kübel muß man zwar öfter gießen. Aber sie sind weniger anfällig für quasi alles andere und lassen sich am Ende leicht beernten.

    Ich vermute ja seit einiger Zeit, dass ich maybe undiagnostiziert auf dem Autismus-Spektrum sein könnte. Ich habe ein paar Selbsttests gemacht, die in diese Richtung deuten. Aber es behindert mich nicht (mehr) stark. Ich leb ja nun auch schon 40+ mit mir und komme ganz gut klar. So, who knows... 🤷

    Gestern habe ich aber einen Test gemacht, der von 3 Psycholog_innen entwickelt wurde, die selbst autistisch sind/waren, der #Monotropism ermittelt. Und was soll ich sagen... There's no denying.
