Speaking of #PyGrunn, will anyone here be present at this year's edition?

@simeon Cool! I don't think we actually met before IRL? I am pretty recognizable in the crowd, so feel free to say hi! (I'm also going to be a speaker again 🙌🏻)

MS Docs: Using the Setup Assistant with modern authentication is considered modern authentication.

If using Setup Assistant with modern authentication wouldn't be considered modern authentication would it still be called Setup Assistant with modern authentication?

@tomw “increase your typing speed by leaving out all the vowels”

It’s either that, or a cat attacked your keyboard.

Following my question about language differences, someone sent me this perfect book advice:

"The Culture Map; Breaking Through the Invisible Boundaries of Global Business" by Erin Meyer.

The link below has a descriptive summary.

Hat/tip to @nessita for recommending this book, and @CodenameTim for alerting me to it.

I saw the fuss about the “Don’t link to our website” people yesterday, and didn’t comment much until this morning, because I hadn’t realized just how crap-laden their page was (my ad-blocker did its job). My initial reaction was that they kept talking about “the mastodon devs should fix this” but isn’t part of the deal with open source (which mastodon is, right?) that if you see a problem, you can go fix it yourself which they didn’t seem to have any interest in. Open source much, guys?

mahryekuh,
@mahryekuh@fosstodon.org avatar

@davepolaschek That is a great advice! It appeals also to the community aspect of OSS, where everyone has different opinions. I hope to fit this quote into my presentation because it’s good.

PS. I have no clue what the “don’t link to our website” thing is about, but I hope they figured it out.

@mahryekuh@fosstodon.org avatar

@benjaoming @davepolaschek If it’s about link preview generation, I absolutely still need to fix my blog to showcase smaller image. Right now it just show my name and takes up a big part of the screen. Then again, I’ve been meaning to fix that for too long 🥲

Open source contributors, what did you wish you knew when you started contributing? Or is there something that kept you from contributing for too long?

I am asking for a presentation, which I will give in two weeks.

@kellogh That’s a good one! Nice reminder for https://www.volunteeramnestyday.net/

@anderseknert Thank you! I definitely did that with Django. Unfortunately the other staple in my toolset has a maintainer who likes to chase people off, but you can’t win them all 😁

@mahryekuh@fosstodon.org avatar

@CodenameTim This is great! I wonder if there are people who only want to do big changes will be highlighted in release notes 🤔

mahryekuh,
@mahryekuh@fosstodon.org avatar

@CodenameTim Someone once said that if you don't believe a small change makes a big impact, just remove a (semi)colon from your code. 😅

@Di4na Django’s Selenium tests would sometimes just nope out too, though I’m pretty sure Sarah fixed it (though graciously allowed me to take the credit) 😂

New mechanical keyboard whodis?

After several Keychron referrals, I went with a Keychron V3 Max and red Gateron Switches. It's interesting so far. Also, the dial knob is fantastic and 100% suitable for people like me who mess with the sound volume all the time.

mahryekuh,
@mahryekuh@fosstodon.org avatar

@simeon Yeah, it's great! I still need to reprogram it but it feels like a process you need time and spoons for.

I made a few changes to a separate numpad already, and it felt exciting, powerful and overwhelming at the same time.

Thinking about this:

> Django apps should use as little code as possible; they should lack boilerplate. Django should take full advantage of Python’s dynamic capabilities, such as introspection.

@webology You just motivated me to try it. There are so many Chromium-clones out there, one could get lost.

@oliverandrich @webology I didn't want to use Google Chrome and now I have... Firefox, Edge, Brave, Opera, and (since a few minutes) Vivaldi.

Though I only use Edge for accessibility testing and thought I'd removed Brave.

Edit: I somehow forgot about Safari, but can live with that.

One of the worst things that can happen to a new idea for reforming software development is to have DHH swoop in with a half-assed shitty implementation of it, poisoning the idea for a generation of devs

mahryekuh,
@mahryekuh@fosstodon.org avatar

@baldur @mms Another reason why I like Mastodon is that it's so much easier to avoid these Tech Bro hot takes that were prevalent on the Bird site.
