New looks great but we’ll need to wait for before we get to the “why”. A skinner iPad with a nice screen is great, but still doesn’t turn the iPad from an overpowered movie streaming device into something worth the cost.

I’m curious if we get that amazing virtualization tech on iPadOS with a legal way to run macOS. That could really transform the iPad from niche to go-to travel device.

What Static Site Generator are you using these days?

I'm serious considering leaving the Hugo ecosystem because upgrading things is just awful.

I'm most interested in single binary replacements (Go or Rust preferably).

@ChrisShort Not static site but I run my site on Ghost self hosted with docker compose. Couldn’t be easier to keep running. Nice to have an API and Nginx caching works well.

I don’t understand this fury over linking to a account. First, every software product I use requires me to link to some centralized account. Also at least on steam deck I was warned, idk, three times before I bought it that this was a requirement? On the store page, on the small text warning and possibly when the game boot the first time.

Never have I seen a group get so mad over a complete nonissue.

Probably says something about the state of the world that the emulator for is a better gaming experience than most “real” mobile games.

I find this response baffling. Like of course the law should be used to inform how companies design products and provide services. Safety regulations, accessibility requirements, consumer protection laws are all guardrails to how companies can build, market and operate their products.

Also uses the law to its advantage whenever it can. Tax schemes, non-disclosure and (until recently) non-competes, patent and copyright laws are all tools Apple has no problem deploying when it feels its interest is threatened.

OK, so you know the so-called "source code leak" from Rabbit for the last week? It wasn't a real leak, but what it showed was different than what I was expecting. So Rabbit Hole, the way you configure your R1 -- it only works on desktops, which I thought was rather odd. And then I went to manage my connection and I figured out why. This whole thing is a fucking VNC session in the web browser served as if it is a modal login

@film_girl I mean I too find oauth annoying but that’s insane. Great find.

Can you imagine the sheer, raw asshole energy you have to possess to ask for a $45 billion payday while you cut the internship program? Like do you feel weird being a Batman villain?

Not to be too judgmental but I’ve had a site survive lots of traffic and traffic at the same time with zero downtime with some basic Nginx caching. So seems like a you problem. https://news.itsfoss.com/mastodon-link-problem/

One thing I never imagined when I pictured having a kid was watching an hour of a woman playing with children’s toys on a beach. I can’t decide if it’s a genius idea or the most deranged thing imaginable. But it’s her favorite show.

She gives the toys food and then makes them sad when seagulls steal the food. This is the height of madness.

It is a little crazy that I’ve moved my entire digital life to . Like I don’t know any passwords anymore. I don’t store SSH keys anywhere else. It is a complete trust in a platform I rarely bestow but tbh they’ve never let me down. It just always works. Best subscription I have.

Listening to the great Think Twice about Michael Jackson, you realize how crazy it was that for years the entire world just accepted “yeah a man in his 30s regularly has sleepovers alone with children”.

Like I also just accepted it as part of this “MJ never had a childhood, he’s a child at heart”. Only now looking back at it do you realize like “obviously that was incredibly strange and people shouldn’t have accepted it”.

    I’m surprised the isn’t going to allow the pay or let us show you personalized ads thing. It seems like a perfectly fair compromise to me. You can either pay Meta through ad revenue or directly and preserve your privacy.

    This seems like the EU saying its citizens are entitled to use Meta’s services regardless of their financial value which seems sort of bonkers. Facebook isn’t a public utility.

    matdevdug,
    @matdevdug@c.im avatar

    @Sqaaakoi That's what happens when you go to a Facebook website. You are asking Meta to use their services. And Meta is allowed to say "yes if you pay us OR you let us advertise to you using the more lucrative personalized ad tier". They're offering you a choice. You can have privacy for money or you can trade privacy for access to the features.

    matdevdug,
    @matdevdug@c.im avatar

    @leeloo Delivering personalized advertisements to users in the EU isn't against the law as long as you obtain their consent. When you go to the page Meta is saying "you can either give us the consent to gather that information and legally serve you personalized ads OR you can pay us and not have that". It's a choice, what value do you place on privacy vs access to the system.

    What the EU is asserting is Meta has to eat the loss that a certain percentage of its users will reject the prompt to provide consent, will not pay but will consume the same amount of resources on Meta's servers. That's a radical thing to say. It's effectively a trade tariff.

    Where's the limit on this? If I run a small service and I build my product on the assumption that I'll make X on ad revenue every month, does the EU have the right to tell me "actually everyone gets to use your thing for almost free"? Why does it get to control how I price my product?

    What if Meta says "ok but users with nonpersonalized ads cannot upload photos or videos". They're worth less as users to Meta, can Meta limit the cost of keeping them on the platform?

    matdevdug,
    @matdevdug@c.im avatar

    @3timeslazy Yeah that's the deal. Meta is letting you choose either advertising and data collection OR payment.

    matdevdug, to fediverse
    @matdevdug@c.im avatar

    Only the #fediverse could come up with the idea that journalists wanting to get paid for their work and putting up paywalls is the actual threat to democracy.

    People always paid for #news. That was central to the entire concept. We would get a newspaper delivered to all of our houses every morning and would (sometimes) read it. Then we all collectively stopped doing that because it being on the internet convinced us that the cost of the news was the paper that news was printed on.

    So don’t blame journalism for the lack of information in the upcoming election. The American people didn’t feel it was worth paying for and this is the result. We got spoiled and decided news was free even though we didn’t fund it.

    matdevdug,
    @matdevdug@c.im avatar

    @asjmcguire @thisismissem That's sort of the "grabbing the newspaper machine door before it closes and stealing a copy" solution. It's true but it's also clearly not the intense of the person who provided the content.

    matdevdug,
    @matdevdug@c.im avatar

    @asjmcguire @thisismissem Well I think your issue there would be sort of the nature of online payments. The price you would need to charge to make it worthwhile to provide access to one page is probably higher than most people would be willing to pay.

    You lose like $.30 + 2.9% of the transaction to processing fees. Then you’d have to account for fraud, carding, refunds, chargebacks and maybe VAT although idk about how that works with news.

    Like you aren’t wrong at all but I suspect nobody would be willing to pay the Atlantic $2 an article.
