I heard many folks at PyCon — including a few very prominent ones who shall remain nameless to protect the guilty! — claiming that “black text on a white background” is uniformly and obviously the superior accessibility choice for conference presentations, for various reasons. This is, at the very least, debatable, and I think it would not be too spicy of a take to say it is straightforwardly incorrect. Some evidence follows: 🧵

"The "They'd have more time to practice the talk"" argument?

That's indeed a hot take, because the best time to practice and fix a talk is the time in public transport (trains, planes) and the evening before in the hotel, when normal work distractions are fewer.

Requiring you to pre-submit the slides will lead to talks with a worse flow, more errors and unhappy speakers.

Back from #PyConIT yesterday.

I learned a lot about the FastAPI/pydantic/starlette/uvicorn world direct from the source as well as about OpenTelemetry:

I already fixed my current Pydantic v1->v2 problems today with hints from hallway & sponsor chatting and it's always amazing to talk to the people who write the software you're using.

Also finally played the CABO game, that @treyhunner's has been hyping forever. @mathsppblog brought it from PyConUS and taught it. It's really a lot of fun!

What tips do you have for folks thinking of trying out Mastodon during this year?

3 of my tips:

  1. Follow the hashtag (yes you can follow a hashtag just like following a profile!)
  2. If you post and realize you forgot the hashtag, don't delete your post. Just edit it!
  3. Consider following the hashtag also. Many folks use it without realizing that is the official one.

What tips do you have?

mborus,
@mborus@mastodon.social avatar

@treyhunner

Tips:

  • If you see someone mentioning a technology (or something else) you want to check out later, set a bookmark (Inside your client) in addition to boosting it, because it's hard to find what you boosted a few weeks later.

  • You are other people's algorithm. Make sure to boost interesting posts, otherwise they will not get visibility beyond an audience following the hashtag.

  • For those on iOS, have a look at , you can set in into a Twitter-like single column mode.

Not attending PyCon US and don't want to see all the social media posts about it? (I'll certainly be sharing some)

If you're on a Mastodon instance:

  1. look up the "filters" setting
  2. filter the phrase "PyCon" (no quotes)
  3. make sure not to check "whole word' (so and related phrases are filtered too)

https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/moderating/#filters

@mborus@mastodon.social avatar

@treyhunner this would filter out all those lovely posts about 🇮🇹PyConIT though ;)

After resent-paying for while and after learning about another upcoming price hike, I’ve canceled my Netflix account after almost a decade. It doesn’t deliver even close to the value I’ve been paying and they were so happy with themselves on the latest earnings call, I just don’t want them to see another dollar from me. 😳

mborus,
@mborus@mastodon.social avatar

@hynek Just made the same decision a few days ago. This will be the last month of Netflix.

The final straw was that the monthly household cost from next month is higher than the 🇩🇪 public TV license fee. That's way too much.

I have a huge backlog in recordings from those TV services as well as a large Bluray collection, so I'll probably do very fine no longer having it. I'm not going to miss the annoying "skip intro" buttons and the fights to keep the end credits running...

    @deshipu for me the two finger tap undo is a plus, but the feeling of a digital pen on glass is less fun and the lag between movement and drawing and the reduced accuracy make it a lot less fun than paper. I don’t think we went wrong, it’s feels more like “we’re not there yet” for a while.

    @jugmac00 This will be interesting. A few years ago I managed to complete break Ubuntu's update process by trying to update Python on my dual boot laptop and that remained unfixed because I couldn't risk losing Windows in a re-install attempt.

    While I'm writing this, I'm setting up a spare laptop with 2024.04 LTS beta to bring to . I'll see if working with PyCharm and Jupyter is OK for me.

    Already preparing for Win10 EOL 2025, which will force me on Linux for most of my hardware.

    I've spent a few days playing around with , and I'd like some insights from people who are using it in production. Doesn't need to be a paid project, but more than just "my pet experiment".

    What are you using it for?

    Like, to me it feels as if either the backend needs to be really tailored to HTMX, with HTML fragments and custom headers and stuff, or you need to start writing non-trivial amounts of JS in the frontend for anything but the most basic tasks.

    mborus,
    @mborus@mastodon.social avatar

    @smartsammler @scy I’m using it in production for ticket sale machines and internal web pages. In development for a mobile phone app, too, but that’s a prototype at the moment.

    As a Python dev my JavaScript skills are really basic, there’s almost no JavaScript other than timeout handling (so that the machines go down if the connection to the server breaks)

    Need to test a static website locally? Python's http.server module can be run as a script to do this!

    Just run this:
    python -m http.server

    That hosts a webserver on port 8000 that serves up files in the current directory. 🤖✨

    No more manually changing /some-path/ to /some-path/index.html!

    I use this all the time to check my Sphinx docs locally (works especially great when using Sphinx's "dirhtml" option over "html").

    mborus, (edited )
    @mborus@mastodon.social avatar

    @treyhunner My first paid python job was receiving data from a gate with licence plate scanners and pushing this to a web service. The maker of the gate wasn't able to do that themselves. No data structure or algorithms needed.

    Maybe look for jobs where they just need to pass or convert data.

    mborus,

    @khalidabuhakmeh probably the same as advertising for your product using actors, just that it’s cheaper (so you may not have a budget) - If people would actually enjoy your product so much that they’d tell others, you wouldn’t need to advertise at all.

    I don't remember what we had in our fancy school computer lab (late 70s, all terminals shared 32 kB of memory, if I'm not mistaken) - but the language was some basic dialect. My Blackjack implementation would only run of the other places were vacant...
