I guess the “Do you agree with the PSF’s universal masking policy for ?” poll has been deleted. When I saw it yesterday the vote was 80% “Yes”, and I was so proud. 🩷

“Came for the language, stayed for the community” in action! 🐍

2025 needs masking mandates because it filters out ego-tripping boomers

nedbat, to random
@nedbat@hachyderm.io avatar

@andreasjung It seems like you started this poll in bad faith. You have a clear opinion on the subject. You were not looking for opinions from people, you were trying to start arguments.

hugovk,
@hugovk@mastodon.social avatar

@treyhunner @nedbat @andreasjung Certainly looks bad faith when the Mastodon poll is deleted (79% yes, 66 votes) but not the one on Twitter (33% yes, 3 votes)

Twitter: Pinned Andreas Jung @_andreas_jung 8h #PyCon #PyConUS @pycon 2025 should/must have a masking mandate (if the situation is comparable to 2024)? @thepsf #Python Yes 33% No 67% 3 votes. 6 days 15 hours left

To make it clear: the @pycon session chair is completely lost.
Of course, it is your right to mask outside. It is just scientific bullshit, without scientific evidence…and such statements and such persons in charge are the core problem of the @pycon masking mandate

cheukting_ho,
@cheukting_ho@fosstodon.org avatar

@andreasjung I don’t see any problem of being considerate and suggest people to protect their loved ones and people around them by wearing mask (which in fact, prevent spreading of airborne viruses). Also, even though you don’t agree, you should not be attacking someone who volunteered so much of her time and energy for @pycon because of it.

Well, another is done (for me - continue for another couple of days!)

It was excellent catching up with old friends and meeting tons of new ones. Pittsburgh was definitely a super cool vibe, 2025 should be fun too.

I'm looking forward to recharging my depleted physical batteries, so I can jump into all the important work we have ahead of us to continue to support this amazing community.

See you online somewhere!!

Hey folks, one last entreaty before the hashtag trails off.

We could really use your financial support. Our non-profit is the travel sponsor for US 2024.

We've recouped only 4% of what we gave. We're here to serve & happy to do it but could really use some boosts across the fediverse to drive donors so we can do it again.

Pls donate to help more people experience through tech conference travel:

And then boost!

I'm looking forward to speaking at PyCon Italia 2024, in Florence, Italy, later this week on Friday.

The title of the talk is "Advanced parsing of structured data using Python's new match statement". Given that the match statement still isn't used much in Python Land, I want to make people more aware of how useful it can be for parsing in Python.
