So, we're going back to organic chemistry everyone!

After my first post with my molecular model kit showing an environmental contaminant, I decided to post up another.

This one is a semi-volatile organic environmental contaminant that is commonly found in coal tar, mothballs, and mixed into creosote for rail ties. That distinct "mothball odor" is this compound! Fun fact - a human nose can detect the mothball odor before most standard electronic detectors of organic odors / vapors.

Can you guess the compound? Let me know in the comments!

Did you know...

That there was a Warheads Sour! Green Apple Soda? Neither did I until I found it at the Dollar Tree.

I mean, I just had to try it. I love gimmicky sodas, even if they end up tasting terrible. This one, though, was a big surprise.

I poured some out for myself and each of my kids. We all took a sip and, at once, recognize that it tasted like biting into a sweet, green apple. No sour taste or aftertaste. It just tasted like a sweet, green apple. Weirdly realistic flavor, even more so than a regular green apple candy.

Looking at the ingredients list, it had a all sorts of malic acid - so it SHOULD have been sour. But, to us - no sourness. Just sweetness. The kids really liked it. We may be looking for it again next Dollar Tree visit.

TL;DR - Warheads Sour! Green Apple Soda is better than it has any right to be, actually tasting like a green apple and not very sour. Would drink again.

Happy Caturday on my oldest's birthday!

My oldest turned 15 today, so I took a group of their friends to the zoo.

We've got a "Big Cat" Caturday from the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore.

Hope you all have a great one!

Since I haven't shared my newest figure from my office, for Figure Friday I decided to show you my teeny, tiny Nico Robin!

She's about an inch tall in her Dressrosa look, minus the hat.

I know these Funko Minis are kind of silly, but I like a cute, small figurine. She's currently sitting with a few others on my desk.

Happy Friday!

A throwback Thursday post to 2008 when I was much younger and had a lot more hair.

My sister took this picture of us at a park not far from where I live. It used to be an old fort back in the 1800s, so had some old stone structures like this!

Have a great Thursday!

So, I was tagged on Intagram by facetious_manga to talk about my "Bookstagram Backstory." I don't know if a Pixelfed equivalent exists. Bookselfed? Pixelbook? I don't know, I'll use both hashtags and share.

Regardless. Let's go, I guess.

When did I start on Bookstagram?
This account is and remains a personal account. While I post (often), about manga, this isn't exclusively about books or manga. My first post was in April 2016. Wow...that's a long time ago. I started getting more active in posting about books / manga, participating in things like "25 Days of Manga" in 2020. But it was early 2023 when I started posting a lot more manga pics / reviews.

What inspired your username?
I started on Twitter and needed a small handle. MD - I'm from Maryland, MRN - My initials. 83 - I'm old.

What was your 1st review?
The first "review" I posted was saying that the Free Comic Book Day 2016 Firefly comic was good. It got more detailed in my reviews after that.

Favorite part of Bookstagram?
The community. So may good folks to talk, discuss, and share.

Booksta made me buy?
My Lovesick Life as a 90s Otaku. I couldn't NOT get it, the reviews were just too much and I was not disappointed.

Aesthetic?
Middle aged nerdy, bearded Dad-core? I really have no idea.

Recent reads?
A Silent Voice by Yoshitoki ลŒima
Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku by Fujita
Re-Reading Your Lie in April by Naoshi Arakawa

Describe your aesthetic using emojis

New Manga Pickup - The end of last week I got an order in. What's that manga?!?

It's...

...Pokรฉmon Pocket Comics!

For those who've never read them before, the Pokรฉmon Pocket Comic series are a collection of 4-koma manga that's filled with Pokรฉmon gags. The Black and White issue goes through every new 'Mon in the Unova Pokรฉdex with a goofy gag about each one, with Oshawott serving as a quasi narrator interacting with nearly every 'Mon in the book.

I haven't read the Legendary one yet, but if it's anything like any of the others I've read, it'll be silly and fun, easy to pick up / put down and share with kids.

If you have a kid (or are an adult who is) really into Pokรฉmon, these are fun and worth checking out. Also, each 4-koma set of pages has fun facts about each 'Mon right out of the Pokรฉdex.

Anyway, they're fun and kind of funny.

Let me know if you've ever read any of the Pokรฉmon Pocket Comics!

I don't talk about work here a whole lot, but I'm a chemical engineer by education and have been doing environmental engineering work for the past 17 years.

So, I have an organic chemistry molecular model kit that I have kept at work for years. I, periodically, make contaminants I've seen at various sites across my 17 year career cleaning up the environment.

Do you know what this chemical is supposed to be? Leave a comment below with your guess!

Is it still considered bloomscrolling when the flowers I post are, in fact, fake flowers from an art project I posted up at work made by my youngest kid?

I think so.

I'll allow it.

Have a great one.

They say today is Figure Friday. So, let's go to a tiny figure I have on my desk.

When I graduated kindergarten, this little puppy was sitting on the top of the cake. All through my childhood and into college, it followed me on my dresser the entire time.

Since I entered the workforce after graduating with my Masters, it has been on my desk since. It's a good reminder, I totally was a "Super Grad" from kindergarten. I could tie my shoes and everything.

Hope you have a great Friday and weekend.

It's springtime again and we've got two new Mountain Dew Baja variants for our drinking pleasure.

I mean, I had to try them both. I love me some Mountain Dew.

First, we tried Mountain Dew Baja Point Break Punch. Think of what would happen if you took Kool Aid Tropical Punch and transformed it into a Mountain Dew variant. That's what this tastes like. It's slightly bubble Tropical Punch. Personally, I liked it. So did all of my kids, which is good cause my wife also got us a case of the cans later.

The second is Baja Laguna Lemonade. It's a Dew infused mango lemonade flavor. You can definitely taste some of the mango with a classic Dew aftertaste. Personally, this was the one I liked better, but that's just me.

So, overall - I liked BOTH Baja variants this year, which is great!

How about you? Have you tried the two new Mountain Dew Baja variants?

Let me know your thoughts!

This past weekend, we stopped at a tiny arcade at the hotel I stayed at with the family. They have one of the two greatest arcade games of all time - Ms. Pac-Man and Mortal Kombat II.

Don't argue with me...that's totally a fact.

Regardless, as the main screens cycled through I took this picture. There was a screen that showed up with details on how to order the soundtrack as well as two different Mortal Kombat comic books back when this dropped in 1993.

I wonder...do you think that's still valid? And if not, do you think there's folks out there who still have copies of these comics / the CD? Cause...I kind of want them.

Also, who stood around in an arcade in 1993 with a pen and paper to write down all this information? Cause I want to meet those people too...

...And borrow the soundtrack from them.

Weekend vibes.

I rolled out my new Sonic the Hedgehog shirt this weekend that I had gotten from Box Lunch. I love how the new very beachy shirt looks over my older Sonic shirt.

But yea, got home yesterday from a weekend out with the family. It was fun!

Hope you have a great Monday!

New Read - My Lovesick Life as a '90s Otaku, Volume 2

Okay, internet, I'm caught up!

I finally read Volume 2 of My Lovesick Life as a 90's Otaku and my goodness - the emotions. The feeling of being a nerd in the 90s and trying to be...normal around others. It's too real.

Volume 2 finally sees Meggers embrace her otaku-ness publicly, kind of, but also not. It advances the slow burn romantic tension between the class President and Megumi in such an adorable way. You see Masamune, his anime / manga obsessed Mom, and you see that he's basically solo parenting his siblings. It brings in some sad, but also sweet moments.

Also, Megumi makes an unexpected livelong friend this volume too by defending another girl who has a hard time making female friends. It's adorable and I love every second of it.

I am so glad I jumped into this series and looking forward to Volume 3.

Photograph of a white person's hand holding open Volume 2 of My Lovesick Life as a '90s Otaku. The black and white pages that are open show a dark haired girl smiling and blushing in various panels where she is relishing the fact that someone is reading her self-published manga. In the lower left-hand corner is a light-haired boy who is also blushing a lot while looking at the same girl. In the lower panels, the girl is saying, "This book. I drew it! It's mine!"

New Read - Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, Volume 6 (Naoko Takeuchi Collection)

Flying solo today with the kids and Mrs out after I got home from work.

So, decided to get myself some sushi for dinner and catch up on some Sailor Moon. I'm on Volume 7 of the Naoko Takeuchi Collection re-releases of Sailor Moon.

This volume is all plot, no side stories, with a new enemy arriving - the Dead Moon. They set up a circus in town and there's an eclipse; no stars show up in the sky. Throughout the volume, each of the Sailor Scouts loses their power and digs down to find a new, more potent power.

This includes our trio who ran off to raise Sailor Jupiter as a throuple in the woods. They regain their powers, all four of them, and are on their way to rejoin everyone to eventually take on the Dead Moon Circus and their leaders.

It's a solid volume and there's some concerning magical sicknesses hitting Mamo and, by the end, maybe Usagi too. We also meet a powerful new character who can project as an alicorn.

Can't wait to see what happens next!
