@ai6yr That tiny little plaque isn't worth $50 in my opinion. I'd call it a "Small Free Library" and add it to Google Maps if I wanted it to be findable online.

Tip: You can avoid all of these problems by avoiding invasive medical procedures run out of sketchy storefronts just to cater to your sense of vanity, and deal with the fact that you will, indeed, age.

@ai6yr I wish it were just vanity, but it's also acceptance and just being treated right.

Women who appear young are treated much better than women who age naturally. This matters in lots of contexts: judicial, medical, the workplace and so on. There's lots of quantitative research on it, as well as anecdotal stories.

It sucks, but the cult of youth is real and affecting lives every day.

I used to live near San Jose Mineta and was woken up every weekday morning at 6 am by a FedEx plane that banked hard east right over my house. 😤

Since then I've made sure to check out the noise from flights before I moved anywhere. In my current house I hear planes to/from Moffett, but it's not nearly as busy as a big commercial airport like SJC.

@ai6yr Yes, it's a bad sign when nearby empty lots are more expensive than the home you're looking at.

Just don't move there if you have middle-school-aged kids, because the local middle school has a Great Schools rating of 1. 😂

@ai6yr Based on my experience so far, you want the school ratings to be good, but not too good. 4-6 is the sweet spot.

Below that, the crime rate is too high. Above it, you're dealing with rich, white Republicans.

Want to see a bizarre alternative academic career? Look at mine: failed to get into the teaching precariat, got a part time job editing a research journal, learned early how to get $3000 grants, published eight books and 40 journal papers, ended up a full-time research scholar at a Polish university from age 47. And my kids didn't starve or want! I don't know the official yardstick of success in . But personally I am satisfied.

@exador23 @douglasvb @ai6yr Or they realized that jailing a Democratic senator would make it hard for the rest of the caucus to pass any laws during the last four week of the season. The article mentions that Democrats only have 1 vote's majority.

I'm also noting that neither the Democrat nor the Republican said anything about being innocent until proven guilty, despite how often that cliché is trotted out when white male politicians get in trouble with the law.

The DIY solar peeps regularly break my brain.

Someone wants to connect four 6V batteries for a 12V system.

Easy, right? connect each pair in series, then parallel those pairs.

This is the diagram people shared to show that. so many wires. My brain can't even figure that out.

@exador23 It looks as if they think the distinction between "in series" and "parallel" is about how the batteries are oriented in relationship to each other. Note how all negative poles are connected with the black wire and all positive poles are connected with the red wire.

LAFD: Pacoima Train vs Pedestrian; INC# 0608; 10:48AM; 11321 N San Fernando Rd; https://bit.ly/3QedrMO; Metrolink inbound passenger train reportedly struck one female pedestrian in the vicinity of San Fernando Road and Jessie Street, then continued a short distance before coming to an emergency stop. No apparent patient or fatality found. No reported injuries to train crew or passengers; LAFD personnel assisting with deboarding of train.

@exador23 Most likely the pedestrian wasn't actually hit. Similarly to a truck driver, the train driver can't see the front of the train down where a pedestrian would be hit. Given the relative weights of a pedestrian and a train, they also can't feel an impact.

When I witnessed a person jumping in front of a London Underground train, the train driver and I had very different perceptions of the incident because of the different angles of view.

@ai6yr Good to know. Some of the homes I'm looking at have double glazing. It sounds like I need to ask about the specs to find out if it's worth paying extra for that. Depending on how old they are, it may be better to buy a home with old single-pane windows and pay out of pocket to replace them.

Are your glass panes actual glass? In new mobile homes the part you see through is often plastic. It's fugly! All wavy and dark.
