@SecurityWriter Yes, I noticed. An epic thread that shares interesting and non-obvious information.

I wish there were a way the originator could freeze their thread when it becomes clear that the tr*lls are descending on it.

For some reason, I got a ton (or at least several ounces) of people asking me about Faraday bags for phones the last couple days.

While I’m not in the Faraday bag testing business, you might find this writeup I did a couple years ago helpful, mainly to explore how you can think about what Faraday bags do and don’t do and how to measure them. Go science!

This week, Science published a stunningly irresponsible news story entitled "Fake scientific papers are alarmingly common" and claiming that upward of 30% of the scientific literature is fake.

https://www.science.org/content/article/fake-scientific-papers-are-alarmingly-common

Below, the first two paragraphs of the story.

Headline and intro notwithstanding, the story itself later notes that the detector doesn't actually work and flags nearly half of real papers as fake. Does the reporter just not understand that?

@ct_bergstrom Yeah, that seems racist. 😒

mjausson,
@mjausson@mastodon.design avatar

@ct_bergstrom It seems more surprising that they got any responses at all on this survey.

Particularly if respondents had to click on a link or open an attachment to see the survey. Not clicking on links/opening attachments from Internet Randos is Internet Savvy 101.

Can anyone reccomend a good scheduling app for people with inattentive ADHD? I get so into the immediate NOW that it's hard to keep track of things. I need a good schedule and alarm system to remind me of things that only come up once in a while, like say, the water bill or Dr's appointments. My current alarms on my phone aren't cutting it, as it only does a week instead of a month.

Addendum: Google calendars doesn’t work for me. I need a persistent alarm.

mjausson,
@mjausson@mastodon.design avatar

@samhainnight For bills, I recommend automating them instead of trying to keep track of them.

My bank allows me to automate any bill. For recipients that aren't in their system, they mail a paper check.

That's how I used to pay my rent. It's so much less stressful than risking failure.

For doctor's appointments I use Google calendar. Only thing I don't like is that I have to manually set up notifications for each appointment, so I still miss appointments occasionally.

Good luck!

mjausson,
@mjausson@mastodon.design avatar

@samhainnight Yes, I'm in the same situation regarding not working at a desk. I also have a tendency to lose my phone in the house and to turn off the ringer. Hence forgetting some medical appointments.

Fortunately my doctor calls me if I forget the appointment but last time I had left my phone in the bathroom. 🤦🏼‍♀️

If you figure out a good solution, I'd be interested to hear about it.

So the neighbor with the summer house next door is back, along with their barky dogs. We have a fence in common that’s mostly wood, but one spot that’s about 5 ft long, in the far corner of my yard is made of wire. Guess where my Charliedog and their barky dogs love to go and guess what they all love to do when they’re there. 🙄

Update:
This morning as I was outside with the dogs in the yard, I slipped & fell backwards & landed on the back of my head, hard. I woke Brian up to tell him what happened & turned into an hysterical mess. We both were worried about a possible concussion because I DO NOT cry, so he took me to the local ER to be checked out. While I didn’t have any signs of concussion, I was still dizzy as hell, shaky & on edge, so they Med-evaced me (by helicopter) to a Bay Area hospital for scans.

Apparently someone is threatening to have the instance I’m on defederated if they don’t get rid of me, because I posted that the Mastodon DM system is dangerously broken and non-intuitive.

So, if either of those things happen, it was nice knowing you all. (Well, some of you all, anyway.)

mjausson,
@mjausson@mastodon.design avatar

@kissane @mattblaze It's strange how many people take any criticism of masto personally. It's not their 👶🏻. Yet they react as if we're going to take their baby away when we critique the way it works or the interface. I don't get it.

mjausson,
@mjausson@mastodon.design avatar

@jonobie @kissane @mattblaze That makes sense.

I used to be a UX designer and in that job you have to learn not to identify with the stuff you're designing. So having distance to software comes naturally to me.

Spam (like the torrent of cryptoscamspam lots of people got this morning) has been very rare for me here (and dealt with quickly), but I've noticed that almost all of the spam I've gotten has been via Mastodon's DM feature.

I really wish there was a way to turn DMs off or at least restrict them to people I follow. Control over incoming DMs was a thing Twitter did better than here.

mjausson,
@mjausson@mastodon.design avatar

@mattblaze I regularly see DMs between my mutuals even when I'm not mentioned. I don't think it's supposed to work that way.

    @victor Chalk that one up to insufficient user testing before launch.

    I have these two cheap storage cubes I bought on Amazon years ago. They're basically fabric-wrapped cardboard boxes. My cats sharpen their claws on them several times a day and you can't tell. They look like they're brand new. Not a thread out of place, even though this has been going on for several years.

    Apple should have made the HomePod cover out of that fabric and added a suction cup to the bottom.

    lauren, to random
    @lauren@mastodon.laurenweinstein.org avatar

    Humanity desperately needs the invention of a door that humans can open and pass through without enabling cats to zoom by in or out at the same time. This is likely to involve 4th or higher dimensional physics.

    mjausson,
    @mjausson@mastodon.design avatar

    @lauren You mean like an airlock? I have that in my home.

    My backdoor leads to a short hallway/laundry room. I close all doors leading to the hallway and make sure it's cat free before opening the backdoor. When I return home, I close the backdoor before opening any interior doors.

    One of my cats is a door dasher, so this has saved me countless hours of worry.

    mjausson,
    @mjausson@mastodon.design avatar

    @lauren I can see that being a problem in a multi-person household. Here it's just me and the cats. So if a door is open at an inopportune time, it's all on me.

    Here's my little door dasher coming into the airlock after I've opened the kitty door to it.

    We just lost our dear little Cleo cat (grey tabby on the lower step) who we had for 14 years -- this week from a sudden illness. She followed me everywhere, rode on my shoulders, was clever, and would look you in the eye and say what she thought. We miss her terribly. This morning when I sat up in bed, Bones (upper step) came over, reached up, put his paws on my shoulder and gave me a hug.

    mjausson,
    @mjausson@mastodon.design avatar

    @mattblaze One use case that currently no social media platform has solved is verifying authoritative sources of information. That's something that Twitter used to do well.

    E.g. you used to be pretty sure that if you followed @zelensky_ua that it actually was the president of Ukraine. That worked right down to e.g. local fire brigades.

    It was incredibly useful for getting out the word about incidents, accidents, emergencies, severe weather etc. 1/2

    mjausson,
    @mjausson@mastodon.design avatar

    @mattblaze Yes that is definitely something that would need to be decentralized geographically to work at scale. You can't expect someone in San Francisco to be able to verify the fire department in a regional city in say Paraguay. Basing it on DNS makes sense from that perspective.

    I would really like to see a social media platform be proactive about it. That would make the platform very attractive to journalists too.
