@motomatters somewhat tasteless, but has anyone thought of renaming the team/rider combination to "DNF Aprilia of Miguel Oliveira"

This is the start of the Day 07 thread

I’ll post the video and data as soon as I can, but the mobile network is patchy here in the train near Verviers

But I’m 😡🤬 this morning. Because of Deutsche Bahn, and then the German police…

motomatters,
@motomatters@masto.ai avatar

@jon I live near the Dutch/German border close to Arnhem/Emmerich, and one of the things I like doing is riding along and crossing the border, either on a bicycle or motorcycle. Never been checked.

motomatters,

@jon agreed. And as you pointed out, to intimidate the vulnerable

Marc Marquez Penalty No Longer Valid After Case Exceeded Time Limits Set By FIM Regulations

@dsmdexter This is all down to the FIM. They fucked this up big style.

motomatters,
@motomatters@masto.ai avatar

@dsmdexter My understanding is that this is because of the rider Marquez hit, not because of Marquez.

The rider Marquez hit shares a nationality with the FIM president.

motomatters,
@motomatters@masto.ai avatar

@broom The stay of execution was issued on 12th April, and 4 weeks would give them until 10th May.

But the MotoGP Court of Appeal asked for submissions from the parties to be made by 6th April, and 4 weeks after that is 4th May.

Interesting question. The rules say "after the brief of appeal has been received". My interpretation is that the "brief of appeal" is the initial submission made after the penalty was changed.

motomatters,
@motomatters@masto.ai avatar

@nlarson830 @dsmdexter The credibility of the stewards and the entire stewarding process is in tatters anyway

motomatters,
@motomatters@masto.ai avatar

Here's my write up of this. By not hearing the Repsol Honda team's appeal against Marc Marquez's penalty within the deadline set in the regulations, the penalty is no longer valid.

motomatters,
@motomatters@masto.ai avatar

The problem, I will say once again, is the incompetence of the FIM.

motomatters,
@motomatters@masto.ai avatar

@fonecokid In this particular case, I know for a fact, that the problem is the FIM and not Dorna.

motomatters,
@motomatters@masto.ai avatar

@fonecokid the root of the problem

In 1614 Spanish soldiers & their Indigenous allies surrounded Dutch trading post and set fire to it, "de forma que se quemaron todos los flamencos sin que quedase ninguno" [in such a way that all the Dutch/Walloons burned and none remained]

I used to think these kinds of documents were exaggerations, but time and again there has been sufficient corroborating evidence. The Spanish burned their Dutch rivals alive, & likely Indigenous allies of the Dutch as well.

motomatters,
@motomatters@masto.ai avatar

@historianess if you think of the atrocities committed in the 20th Century (or even in Bucha in Ukraine), it is all too believable.

Seeing a lot of people talking about the NY Times profile of the "new, softer, gentler" Elizabeth Holmes, and my immediate reaction is that Americans have a blind spot for class. Why did Holmes get such a fawning profile? Because it was written by a nice upper middle class woman, who could empathise with someone from the same class.

Political discourse in the US always goes straight to race. Rightly so, but this means that class gets overlooked.

motomatters,
@motomatters@masto.ai avatar

@mister914 And yet it's funny how redemption only happens to upper middle class people.

motomatters,
@motomatters@masto.ai avatar

@mister914 that's fair. There is a certain level of celebrity at which rehabilitation is easier.

However, I still believe that the US has a blind spot about class. Seems it's still a very class-based society, especially as social mobility has declined.

motomatters,
@motomatters@masto.ai avatar

@mister914 as compared to its conception of itself.

We're currently experiencing another sharp uptick generated submission spam courtesy of a few "make money online" videos that are specifically targeting us. Laughable, I know, but the people viewing those videos often don't understand that. Nearly 300 in the last week.

motomatters,
@motomatters@masto.ai avatar

@cstross @clarkesworld I also found requiring people to preview comments helped. Small obstacles are enough to weed out the vast majority of chancers

Welcome to the Day 05 thread

Today I'm taking 2 trains (137km total) and there is one bike leg to all three border lines (34km)

I've brought my departure from Enschede forward an hour - so as to avoid rain later on the bike

I'll cross these borders:
🚲 Barlo (DE) – Winterswijk (NL) – dismantled line
🚲 Bocholt (DE) – Aalten (NL) – dismantled 750mm gauge tramway
🚲 Borken-Burlo (DE) – Winterswijk (NL) – dismantled line

Here’s today's video intro https://urbanists.video/w/oZncv3amvNnPedggVvkdKe
