I have a proposal:
Whenever some company insists on calling a piece of equipment or software "smart", let's call it "needy" instead.

  • needs wifi
  • needs bluetooth
  • needs update
  • needs cookies
  • needs access
  • needs account
  • needs login

I want dumb stuff that works.

When a was peerie a loved learning Shetland dialect - what a didn’t know was just how many accents exist in this island group of ~23,000 folk!

If you’re interested in #shetland dialect check out the link to hear the various accents & sound files! It’s really interesting & I find it really comforting and soothing to listen to. #scotland #scots #uk

My preview of the Austin round is posted. Is Austin a good place for MotoGP? What makes COTA so weird? Can Marc Marquez regain his crown as king of COTA? Should we be looking out for Maverick Viñales? All this and more

man goes to windows error logs. says he can't delete file. lacks permission. life seems harsh and cruel.

windows says, "treatment is simple. windows administrator account is in town tonight. go and ask him to delete the file."

man bursts into tears. says "but doctor... i am the administrator"

A few days ago, my groovebox, the #SynthstromDeluge, running the new and awesome community-built firmware, crashed, which was very cool.

Not that it crashed, but what happened next: It displayed a colorful pattern on its pads.

That's a stack trace. It's listing the last steps the code made before crashing. The devs have asked to be sent photos of these, to help them find bugs.

I've pasted it on Discord, and there's a bot that recognizes these images and decodes them into addresses!

"Matt, tracking on the web, it's just how it is. If we get rid of it so many companies will die off."

There were companies before tracking tech. There was advertising before tracking tech.

Tracking tech is just how they can pay the least, to get the most. It's not a right. It's not a given. It's not required.

How did it work before? You made good products and the stuff that was most popular rose to the top.

Ban tracking tech. Hamstring predatory and scammy products that survive on targeting.

At the Ducati launch, I interviewed Davide Barana. He talked about how to make the Ducati even better, what motorcycle manufacturers have to learn about aerodynamics, the role of AI, and why success isn't as easy as just poaching engineers

In 2023, MotoGP riders were given 24 warnings and time penalties for breaking tyre pressure rules. In 2024 riders will be disqualified for that. If that rule had applied in 2023, just how different would the championship have looked? I did the maths.

, 17 Jan 1882, Dr Aletta Jacobs opens her medical practice in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

As well as being one of the first women physicians in the country, she developed the diaphragm as an effective form of birth control (hence its nickname of “Dutch cap”).

She also fought for women’s right to vote, and for better working conditions for women.

Let's laugh at Republicans fighting each other over a sexy beer calendar.

But the whole thing is also very revealing. "Evangelical" used to be about religion and faith.

Now it's just code for "MAGA," which is why they're fine with bikini photoshoots.
