There really ought to be an established nomenclature to distinguish among types of instrumental playing.

“Jam” obscures a basic distinction that Phish fans have managed: Type 1 (related to a song) and Type 2 (unrelated to a song).

Dead setlist culture tends to make Type 2/pure improv invisible, esp. in the 1972-1974 period.

For example - 12/31/72: “Truckin’ > The Other One > Morning Dew” is not adequate or helpful.

@4CPcomics we're in the early stages of that discussion at Jerrybase, starting with some easy cases and working our way into the hard ones. Our specific requirement is to not clutter up the setlists too much, so they can be read at a kind of zoomed out level for stats and such, and to allow certain kinds of searches and reporting to return intuitive results. But we do want to capture the full details of structure over time. For example you should be able to search for every "tiger" meltdown etc

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@4CPcomics the reason it takes a lot of discussion is that we have to get the data structure right before we start recording things into it. But I think we came up with a work around for that today, a hidden layer that lets us take notes on deep structure/highly granular detail without needing to fine tune it or expose it before it's ready

Anyway I'd be curious what you think the right amount of detail is exactly or otherwise how to represent it all

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@4CPcomics doesn't have to be on the spot at all. This is a lifetime work 😁

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@4CPcomics I think the key idea for me is to have a base data layer and then a detail layer for additional structure and to have display and searches work across each. The amount of detail I want is too much for many users. But it's solvable. Adding the Detailed view (go to any Event page on desktop browser and flip the toggle in the upper right) is a small step in that direction since it is a better way to view Notes esp when they become numerous. Could store any kind of substructure data

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@4CPcomics that's what we're working on, easy cases first! Right now I'm working through early 1981 sequences surrounding drums and space. There are a lot of errors in that specific data, because most people don't listen closely enough to hear (for instance) that there's a hard stop between drums and space so no >. But it's also forced a discussion about what is and is not a "jam" worth tracking separately in the context of the song leading into drums. Many "Song > drums" are just (1/x?)

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@4CPcomics ...continuations of the Song (e.g. PITB > drums is almost always just PITB, even a very long Eyes > drums is usually just extended noodling on Eyes, etc). But often enough to matter, there's a distinct discontinuity, and more music that is clearly not a continuation of the song, and that becomes "Song > jam > drums". We don't count extremely brief ones, but in practice, I'm finding the judgment calls to be easy so far. (2/3)

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@4CPcomics "Space" means "drummers not playing a beat if present, no melody or clear repeated riffs/themes". So conversely, if there's a beat and one other structured musical element from the guitars/keys, it's either a jam or a lead-in or lead-out to or from a song.

Saw a couple good this week. First up was the classic adaptation of REBECCA, one of the all time great Gothic romance thrillers. We got to see a lovely print of it on the big screen at the iconic, beloved Hollywood Theater here in . It's an extremely subversive film for the era (1940!!), with brilliant themes and brazen subtext. Was presented as part of a queer film series and the crowd was brilliant - knowing and engaged but respectful. Superb

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

Art and artists really are strange. This film has a lot of really smart, thoughtful things to say about the relations between men and women, and the damage that power disparities cause. Yet we know about Hitchcock's treatment of women. Ain't that something.

While I def agree with the takes in the Deadcast that the pre-Fire versions of Scarlet Begonias from 1974 and 1976 are fantastic, I have two additional notes:

After that era the solo section within Scarlet was sometimes pushed to new heights, with surging, thrilling peaks (like Estimated Prophet in the same time frame).

The version right after the debut of Fire is, inexplicably, another standalone Scarlet, and it has one of the finest outro jams of all:

@drewphish for decades this only circulated with an absolutely brutal cut to a mediocre audience tape near the peak. Charlie circulated this upgrade without any real comment that it fixed one of the all time harshest tape cuts on record! A true delight.

Some shoutouts for the even more superb than usual Deadcast episode on Scarlet Begonias:

  • the more other pods I hear the more I appreciate the role Rich plays on the production side. Always additive, never intrusive

  • huge shouts to Bob Weir's utterly iconic part esp. early in the song - perhaps second only to China Cat for blowing new heads' minds when they realize that's Bob not Jerry

  • feels like this song opened up Billy's drumming in a style that helps define the year

Oregonians: I'll be out there next week with my wife/kids (7 & 11), staying with her aunt/uncle in Lake Oswego and Neskowin. Our local hosts will take good care of us - planning side trips to Hood, CRG, etc. - but do you recommend any primo family attractions/hikes, eateries, breweries, dispensaries, live music spots, or other happenings? (I'll try to restrain myself from record shopping, and I think we'll just miss Kamasi Washington.)
@mrcompletely @caravan @thesizzler @SourceRolls others?

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@thesizzler @BEK97 @caravan @SourceRolls fantastic recs. No notes (though I can't speak to the booze rec). Archive is great bc it's got the best local selection of both flower and dabs (tho I don't like their house brands of the latter) but it's also in a mad sketchy part of town so you get to see Real Portland 😭 😂 .

Powell's City of Books downtown is a cliche Portland rec, but legit amazing for book lovers. Hopscotch is a mini Meow Wolf type art spot to check out. The rest depends on weather.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@thesizzler @BEK97 @caravan @SourceRolls Lauretta Jean's is superb but it's so busy no one goes there anymore 😁

The Reel M Inn dive bar down the street has fried chicken that's the best food of any type in the Portland area imo

Farmers markets are in swing. Look for early berries, and folks from local tribes selling exquisite fresh salmon out of coolers

Have this #AllmanBrothers tribute gig coming up in #Raleigh at the Lincoln on Saturday so I sat down with my #dobro last night to make sure the internal Fishman still worked. Of course, it didn’t. So, a little heavy duty double sided tape and an old Lawrence and I’m back in business. Sounds pretty great, too!
