@kjhealy In the heyday of mailing lists, I was banging my head on a problem that had been nagging me and did a search. I found a mail archive thread describing the problem well, and checked to see if they'd found a solution, only to realize that I had been the one to write the email

I just went digging for why Ethernet jumbo frame size is typically 9000, and found out that the reasoning is "until equipment supports much more than 9000 byte frames, we can use 9000, because it is an easy number to remember" https://docs.globalnoc.iu.edu/i2network//jumbo-frames/rrsum-almes-mtu.html

@whitequark A round number that still works with suitable reliability with the standard checksum algorithm, if I understand correctly

OK so let’s talk about the TikTok vote today. Because the amount of woefully misinformed calls and social media outreach over the last two days PROVES that we had a problem. Thread:

mulad,
@mulad@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@SeanCasten The complete lack of effort to create privacy regulations that would apply equally to all platforms is really driving my concerns, and making me strongly question motivations. This creates deep distrust of the justifications.

We're concerned about CCP influence? That basically makes me wonder how much our own intelligence agencies are relying on hooks into social media platforms.

It's hard to dismiss the clear profit motives of Meta, Alphabet, and Oracle vs. this competition

Any other users of @Tusky on Android out there who could confirm whether, when they include a URL in a toot, it is converted to a clickable link when posted or not? Mine aren't - trying to confirm if this is a Tusky issue, or an issue with my instance

mulad,
@mulad@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@25kV @Tusky it's been working for me, as far as I know. Be sure to include the https:// at the beginning. I don't have consistent behavior for link preview cards showing up, if that's what you're referring to

mulad,
@mulad@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@25kV If it happens to be the preview problem, it can be partly mitigated with the "Show link previews in timelines" option in Preferences

@tubetime For the moment I'm posting both here and on Bluesky. Bluesky is generally a lot more fun, but more sardonic (for both good and ill). Seems a lot easier to waste time over there

malwaretech, to random

In hindsight, I think I made a mistake by avoiding calling out bad behavior from the left for so long. A long time ago someone convinced me that the only way to navigate a hyper-polarized US society was to pick a side and stick with them no matter what. But to be completely honest, I despise the brainless tribalism and think it counter productive. If your knee jerk response to any criticism of what you perceive to be the official position of your 'side' is "you just came out as <opposite side>, delete your account" then you have no business following me, and certainly no business being in my comment section.

mulad,
@mulad@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@malwaretech Sure, though I grew up trying to view all sides of various issues, and often found myself mired in indecision. It's important to have a solid moral grounding for moving humanity forward by doing as much good as possible. The left easily gets wrapped around the axle on fairly nitpicky details. Definitely call out bad behavior and halt harm when it's found, but simplicity in messaging is really important too. Always addressing every single nuance can waste precious energy

malwaretech, to random

The thing that’s been worrying me the most is that short limits on social media have normalized not having any nuance whatsoever. As a result of that and the secondary effect of declining attention span, people not only don’t share nuance takes, but don’t seek to understand the nuance in the first place. It’s a really powerful catalyst for radicalization.

mulad,
@mulad@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@malwaretech Along that line, I also think the fact our timelines tend to be a random jumble of different topics makes it harder to think through things. I made pretty heavy use of lists on Twitter to group similar accounts together, which helped but always had its issues (and Mastodon's lists feel even more cumbersome, unfortunately)

Oof, California is buying some hydrogen fuel-cell trains from Stadler, to be used on the (Amtrak California) San Joaquins and Altamont Corridor Express services. I guess this is 4 more after one initial prototype, with the option to get up to 25 of them. Frustrating that they still aren't doing overhead wire. At least Caltrain electrification is getting close to being operational https://www.railwaygazette.com/traction-and-rolling-stock/california-orders-hydrogen-trains/65114.article

The latest figures before I messed this up were this:

About 75% of people clicking on a link to a Mastodon post saw it displayed a normal post, 25% saw it displayed in a browser window.

@b0rk This makes me think of the "module" command, which comes in Tcl (environment-modules / Tmod) and Lua variants these days. It's often used in HPC environments to set up a slew of environment variables (PATH, CPATH, CFLAGS, MANPATH, LD_LIBRARY_PATH, etc.) in your shell with a single "module load ..." command

pkg-config is kind of similar with its .pc files, though it only spits out values, AFAIK, rather than directly modifying the environment
