I've been trying to rip any surveillance stuff out of my web sites. Not entirely possible, but Wordpress, but I'd made good progress.

But now my ebookstore is under a heavy spam user attack. The spam users can't DO anything; I don't take comments from the public. But they're sending out masses of emails that will bounce.

I guess it's time to deploy recaptcha. Which has Google hooks. :flan_piteous:

(Health insurance is something else; that needs to be a public good for everyone. Talking insurance on new buildings only.)

I think we need to stop insuring new homes in high-fire, high-flood areas, like select parts of California and the Gulf Coast, and the entirety of Florida. We know new houses in certain areas can't possibly stand long enough to pay off their mortgages. I sure don't want the public on the hook for developers' greed.

Spent a couple hours today making sure that my business bookkeeping was tidy so that I could easily pay my taxes and document everything.

A couple of BSDCan receipts were missing: a meal, and my overnight parking in Toronto. I didn't claim them, as I can't document them.

But I look at the headlines today about the $20 billions IRS cut, and wonder why I bother. It's not like anybody's going to be checking tax documentation in my working lifetime.

But, ethics. Dammit.

The guys were happy to see us!

But not so happy later.

Grandpa watched them for us. We left everything he'd need on the futon and said "Give each two or three treats a day. A mix of whatever's here."

Pretty normal.

We get home and the food dishes are full. The poop has been scraped up. Grandpa took an empty treat can and put a mix of treats in it. Dregs remain in the bottom. Two toddler puffs, a couple chunks of this and that, and--

an Ikea sour gummy?

She Who Must Be Obeyed left a ziploc bag of gummies on a table in the rat room. Not on the futon, but close enough that he must have thought we'd slipped up.

The guys played with us last night, sure. But they also spent a LOT of effort trying to reach that table.

I don't care if outsiders do full-text indexing on my toots. I am a public figure, and this is my public face.

I do VERY MUCH care if outsiders do full-text indexing on fedi nodes that have their "do not index/data mine" flags set. That's a violation of consent.

The universodon folks say that fedi folks are creating cool content and should be discoverable. I absolutely agree that fedi folks are creating cool content!

Some folks DO NOT WANT TO BE DISCOVERED. Period. Their reasons are their own and best discussed over a drink. The fedi's poor discoverability is a feature, not a bug.

The intent behind full text search might be good, but intent is irrelevant. Only impact matters.¹

And I'm saying that as a creator who depends on social media to survive.

Consent, and understanding consent, is important. I'll be defederating from universodon.com this week, unless they stop this.

¹ No, I'm not quoting my orc stories. My stories are quoting me, who is in turn quoting any number of smart people.
