Last week the CEO said Tesla will spend $500 million expanding the charger network.

"cool" amazon prime video is moving things to "freevee" so that you have unskippable noisy BS ads continuously. I pay for a service so that I don't have ads, you don't get to add a "free" service and move all the content to that "free" service and act lack you're doing some good.

It's surreal how slowly time moves in the world of C compilers.

Today there are still active projects that are hesitant to move past C89, and C99 is still the "new" standard.

The C99 standard has been released before the first public Mac OS X and Windows XP. It's older Itanium and the x86-64 instruction set. It predates iPod, Game Cube, first ever Xbox, and Nokia 3310.

Entire platforms lived and died in the meantime, while C programmers still can't be sure if they can rely on the new C99.

@mattgodbolt i was going to ping you about a person wearing a compiler explorer top on computerphile and then realised i was going to tell you that you were on computerphile - which I hope you’re aware of, but you’ve been exposed to enough UB that maybe you aren’t anymore :)

God fucking dammit google is a fucking shithole company, I'm very glad I left it, and the longer people continue to work for them the less respect I have for them.

ohunt,
@ohunt@mastodon.social avatar

@drahardja yeah, until they realized they could charge more for ads by allowing targeting, and then went all in on consumer abuse. The reverse acquisition of double-click - famous for unbelievably shitty ads pretty much ensured this outcome. They're institutionally incapable of anything other than surveillance capitalism at this point.

Again, I never blocked AdWords - literally they entire sales pitch, and what made google massive was "ads that aren't irrelevant bandwidth consuming BS"

ohunt,
@ohunt@mastodon.social avatar

@drahardja but they threw that out along with any semblance of ethical consideration of any actions.

It's in my bio but in case it wasn't clear, since today is the day, I'm a trans woman. I came out in 1998.

My number one wish for today: trans representation in popular entertainment. Representation, showing minorities as real people rather than caricatures, makes it harder for the haters to spread their venom and infect others.

Reminder that if you have kids who have the ability to receive email, you should have the talk about how this kind of BS extortion spam is both fake (hacking is hard, scamming is not), and even if it was real there's nothing that they have done that was wrong or made them at fault.

This is another reminder that telling children it's wrong/sinful/whatever for them to have the standard going-through-puberty experience, you're enabling all kinds of abusers, including even this shitty extortion.

Truly great when someone replies to your post, says you're wrong, provides no evidence to back that up, says they're ending the conversation, and then explicitly messages you to say that they're muting you.

This after blindly pulling "I've been doing this for X years", saying you're arrogant, and afaict not ever going "I wonder what this person with opinions on C++ does for a living?" or even "how long have they been doing this?"

“Memory safety is easy in C++”

Hahahaha, not even remotely true and if your article makes a claim like that it calls into question every other claim you make.

Using vector and span does not make your code memory safe - neither performs bounds checks. Using iterators is not memory safe, for the same reasons. The triviality of UB leading to safety checks being removed means even trying to guard memory fails.

Re the last posts, I think "investing" in crypto is, was, and always will be stupid. But I work in tech, so understand what it is.

If you don't work in tech, then all you were fed was talking heads on finance channels talking about huge profits, and invited speakers about how revolutionary crypto was.

Financial media was complicit in aiding these scams, and even people who might be wary of investing in things they don't understand, were being told "this is a real thing" in all consumer pubs.

Never ever ever ever ever ever ever trust what caller ID says. Never do anything that someone who calls you and claims to be from a company or government organization tells you to do. Never give cash to anyone who claims they represent a company, a lawyer, or the government, and they need the cash to help you out. No legitimate organization works solely with cash. https://www.thecut.com/article/amazon-scam-call-ftc-arrest-warrants.html

ohunt,
@ohunt@mastodon.social avatar

@glennf the fact that "caller ID" was introduced, and didn't require that the ID match the account, was itself absurd. The fact that VOIP companies allow people to specify seemingly arbitrary identities as a product, should simply require that they accept liability incurred by people who believe the stated IDs.

There are problems with people continuing to provide passwords, 2FA tokens, approval dialogs in response to phone calls, etc but they're doing it because Caller ID is telling them to.

I am still in camp blue no matter who for a spectrum of reasons, but I am surprised at how many friends and acquaintances have soured due to the genocide Biden is supporting.

ohunt,
@ohunt@mastodon.social avatar

@Migueldeicaza what irks me is like sure Biden isn’t stopping the genocide, but the GOP happily supports it as well, but they also want to bring the genocide to the US and target every non-white non-Christian as well, alongside anyone not cisgendered, and not straight.

That’s before you get to their support for Russia attempting genocide in Ukraine, and threatening to invade the rest of Europe.

ohunt,
@ohunt@mastodon.social avatar

@Migueldeicaza sure Biden isn’t perfect, but the ability to do anything is severely hamstrung by the Supreme Court put in place by all those people who went “Hillary isn’t a real liberal” and voted for trump by not voting or by voting for stein. The result of those self centered shitheads is abortion is illegal, discrimination against LGBT is legal, voter suppression is legal, gerrymandering is legal, etc

All of which means you don’t get to not vote democrat because they’re not doing enough.

Today in ACAB.

I can't stop thinking about this chart.

The proper way to understand your local police department is not as "Law and Order" but as "The Sopranos". Their goal is to amass money and influence (and with those, impunity) while doing as...
https://jwz.org/b/ykMn

ohunt,
@ohunt@mastodon.social avatar

@jwz I also like how if they don’t get more funding, they just reduce the “work” they do do and claim it’s because they’re not funded. If they do have a government body they like, they also don’t work, they just stop recording or reporting all the crime that does happen.

This is before we get into their general model of “the law doesn’t apply to us, and we’ll murder you and blame you for it” BS.

None of which can hope to change as long as there are restrictions on felons voting.
