Man reports father as missing, is arrested by police, tortured him for 17 hours, threatened to kill his dog - then bought his dog in told him to say goodbye before it was euthanized "as a stray" - withheld his medication, told him they found the body of his dad and it was clear he was responsible and his memory was "playing tricks on him" then when his alive dad came to find out what was going on, did not tell him, and then searched his house for "another victim" https://www.sbsun.com/2024/05/23/fontana-pays-nearly-900000-for-psychological-torture-inflicted-by-police-to-get-false-confession/

A gang in Florida just broke into a man’s house and killed him when they saw he had a gun. They’ve claimed it was self defense and are currently free on paid leave.

"cool" amazon prime video is moving things to "freevee" so that you have unskippable noisy BS ads continuously. I pay for a service so that I don't have ads, you don't get to add a "free" service and move all the content to that "free" service and act lack you're doing some good.

JFC.

@mattgodbolt i was going to ping you about a person wearing a compiler explorer top on computerphile and then realised i was going to tell you that you were on computerphile - which I hope you’re aware of, but you’ve been exposed to enough UB that maybe you aren’t anymore :)

Reminder that if you have kids who have the ability to receive email, you should have the talk about how this kind of BS extortion spam is both fake (hacking is hard, scamming is not), and even if it was real there's nothing that they have done that was wrong or made them at fault.

This is another reminder that telling children it's wrong/sinful/whatever for them to have the standard going-through-puberty experience, you're enabling all kinds of abusers, including even this shitty extortion.

God I hate the US tax system. My partner was taxed as if she was a single income earner despite checking the correct boxes. So our tax bill is like 20% of her annual salary.

Truly great when someone replies to your post, says you're wrong, provides no evidence to back that up, says they're ending the conversation, and then explicitly messages you to say that they're muting you.

This after blindly pulling "I've been doing this for X years", saying you're arrogant, and afaict not ever going "I wonder what this person with opinions on C++ does for a living?" or even "how long have they been doing this?"

“Memory safety is easy in C++”

Hahahaha, not even remotely true and if your article makes a claim like that it calls into question every other claim you make.

Using vector and span does not make your code memory safe - neither performs bounds checks. Using iterators is not memory safe, for the same reasons. The triviality of UB leading to safety checks being removed means even trying to guard memory fails.

Re the last posts, I think "investing" in crypto is, was, and always will be stupid. But I work in tech, so understand what it is.

If you don't work in tech, then all you were fed was talking heads on finance channels talking about huge profits, and invited speakers about how revolutionary crypto was.

Financial media was complicit in aiding these scams, and even people who might be wary of investing in things they don't understand, were being told "this is a real thing" in all consumer pubs.

Hi folk, trans lifeline isn't doing great financially. I've just donated in support, but don't forget it's January so if your employer does matching donations their matching limits will likely have reset.

If you work in the tech industry your employer almost certainly matches.

Any "protect the children" law that requires providing IDs to companies should require (and make it a felony offense not to) for all elected officials in the relevant jurisdictions to provide to the public a list of every url and site that they or direct family members have visited for which that legislation would apply, updated daily, whether or not the site visited enforces the policy, and to require audits of their devices to ensure compliance.

Just as a reminder, the civil war was about slavery, but somewhat lost in the noise is that the southern states committed treason before any law banned owning people. Multiple treason states seized federal government property before even announcing their "secession" or treason, and the confederacy then invaded the US. All before any legislation was passed restricting slavery. They committed treason at a point where it was still legal for them to kidnap escaped slaves and take them to the south.

If Apple should be required to provide access to iMessage infrastructure to people, why shouldn't twitter or google also be required to provide unrestricted access to theirs? I really don't understand the argument "apple should be required to support iMessage on other platforms" that doesn't equally imply "I should be able to use google's services without paying them" or "twitter cannot limit API access, or require people to use their app or website".

The Catholic Church arguing that just teaching kids about consent is "anti-family". This is to be expected as the Catholic Church has a long documented process of systemic child abuse built on children not understanding consent.
I'm going to assume that any investigation will find the Gerard Gaskin is a child abuser.

Wait, so nothing didn't reverse the protocol or anything, they literally had you do a remote sign in on a Mac mini? That gave them full access to your entire apple account, iCloud docs, photos, etc?

So they dropped any pretense of encryption, drastically invaded your privacy, and put a giant fucking target on their back for "this way to fully compromised apple accounts".

Just wow.
