Hi folk, trans lifeline isn't doing great financially. I've just donated in support, but don't forget it's January so if your employer does matching donations their matching limits will likely have reset.

If you work in the tech industry your employer almost certainly matches.

seeing so many posts on here from 50-something men complaining that younger software engineers can't do as much

i would really like to settle in somewhere and just truly master 1-2 things instead of having to constantly pick up random pieces of garbage and try and use them to reinvent the wheel, but unfortunately the economy has basically incentivized software engineering to become a trade centered around picking up garbage and jamming it in random holes.

if you're old be a leader and fix this

@timbray @h_thoreson what I learned from @lisamelton is that the most important output of senior engineers is new swearwords

It's critical when reading or discussing privacy impacting policies and specifications from Google, that people understand that Google systemically treats "private" as meaning "only the user and google have access to the data".

When google is talking publicly about user privacy, that is still the definition that they are using, even if they know that isn't a definition used by anyone but them (or other ad companies).

Wait, so nothing didn't reverse the protocol or anything, they literally had you do a remote sign in on a Mac mini? That gave them full access to your entire apple account, iCloud docs, photos, etc?

So they dropped any pretense of encryption, drastically invaded your privacy, and put a giant fucking target on their back for "this way to fully compromised apple accounts".

Just wow.

If some company (like Zoom) posts an update to their terms of service that give them carte blanche access to your data for "AI" or any other reason, it doesn't matter if their marketing department makes a post talking about how they won't use that bit of their ToS.
The ToS change was made for a reason, and that reason is to abuse you and your data.
A marketing message saying that they won't do that means nothing, and indicates fairly clearly that they intended to abuse you.

SBF having consequences is purely a product of him having rich victims. As with Holmes and Theranos, the only reason this trial happened is because SBF's made the mistake of causing harm to the rich and famous - look at all the other crypto fraudsters, the ones that have had any consequences had VC or similar funding, as long as you aren't defrauding someone with a congressperson on speed dial you're fine.

Depressing to watch Gruber go all in on fascism/Israel==all jews/palestinians aren't human and deserve everything Israel has been doing to them for the last few decades. Israel's "you must support our apartheid state's war crimes or you aren't jewish" messaging is profoundly antisemitic and people falling for it provide fodder for the war criminals on both sides.

Again the only people who will be meaningfully impacted by "stop criminals/terrorists/pedophiles" based attacks on secure communication are non-criminals people (any government systems that allow this will be used by criminals to attack non-criminals), and marginalized groups (lgbtq, people of the "wrong" race or gender, human rights activists, etc)
Meanwhile criminals can just do stuff like this: https://github.com/davidchisnall/banning-e2ee-is-stupid
An hour of work and <200 LoC by someone unfamiliar with cryptography

God I hate the US tax system. My partner was taxed as if she was a single income earner despite checking the correct boxes. So our tax bill is like 20% of her annual salary.

Reminder that if you have kids who have the ability to receive email, you should have the talk about how this kind of BS extortion spam is both fake (hacking is hard, scamming is not), and even if it was real there's nothing that they have done that was wrong or made them at fault.

This is another reminder that telling children it's wrong/sinful/whatever for them to have the standard going-through-puberty experience, you're enabling all kinds of abusers, including even this shitty extortion.

@mattgodbolt i was going to ping you about a person wearing a compiler explorer top on computerphile and then realised i was going to tell you that you were on computerphile - which I hope you’re aware of, but you’ve been exposed to enough UB that maybe you aren’t anymore :)

"cool" amazon prime video is moving things to "freevee" so that you have unskippable noisy BS ads continuously. I pay for a service so that I don't have ads, you don't get to add a "free" service and move all the content to that "free" service and act lack you're doing some good.

Man reports father as missing, is arrested by police, tortured him for 17 hours, threatened to kill his dog - then bought his dog in told him to say goodbye before it was euthanized "as a stray" - withheld his medication, told him they found the body of his dad and it was clear he was responsible and his memory was "playing tricks on him" then when his alive dad came to find out what was going on, did not tell him, and then searched his house for "another victim" https://www.sbsun.com/2024/05/23/fontana-pays-nearly-900000-for-psychological-torture-inflicted-by-police-to-get-false-confession/

Not of these cops are in jail. All of them are still being paid. For some reason the victim only got 900k. For some reason the city isn't demanding the cops and police union that represents them compensates them.
