What can we do to keep the web open?

Use tech and services outside the big tech. Just Fedi over standard social. Use Peertube instead of Youtube.

Run Firefox.

Set up your own servers for yourself or start a community. Matrix, Mastodon, Lemmy, etc.

Run SearXNG as your search or help others by hosting.

If you can work of free and open source code that helps decentralize and give the power back to the people or create something new. Even if you can code, learning a project and helping others with it or helping create docs, etc.

Spread the word, but don’t be annoying. Help less technical folks get decentralized.

It’s very difficult and can be disheartening, but you don’t have to cold turkey all of it. Each drip in the bucket helps until we’re all united and become a tidal wave.

When all the power is centralized that’s when those central players think they can do whatever they want.

I’ve never heard of yacy.net but I will check it out. Thank you for the info!

YouTube Shorts comments can now be turned into YouTube Shorts: The YouTube team is now announcing one such new experiment coming to a small group of Android and iOS users wherein viewers can use a comment from a clip they're watching and create a separate Shorts video from it.

I've been using Linux for 2 months and prefer it to windows now. What makes me sad is my uni laptop is windows and it needs to stay windows for the time being and every time I have to use it for anything other than watching movies it annoys me lol

I tried to print something off my laptop and it wasn't recognising my printer and told me to install the drivers again so I got fed up, turned my actual computer on even though its too hot to turn it on and managed to print without any issue.

What's your favorite Productivity app for Linux?

I'm personally a big fan of Joplin. Even though it's something I tend to go for periods without using, I always come back to it and remember why I started keeping notes with it in the first place: it's a great way to keep my to do lists and thoughts organized, it can be backed up and sync'd easily, it can export to a number of formats, and it's very intuitive (if you're using the desktop app rather than the terminal based one, it has a lovely interface which is Markdown compatible).

LOVE Joplin! Super simple to set up, light weight, can sync between my wife and I. Don't really have anything more I'd want/need.

[Test post] Can I post to from by mentioning @fediverse sublemmy?

Let's see if it works...

That's how the internet was designed, full connectivity. This corpo walled garden bullshit isn't. And the Fediverse is still young, so there's gonna be bugs, but it'll continue to grow and develop. Even if folks go back to Reddit or Twitter or where ever. It'll always be here. The power of open source. It doesn't depend on the whims of 1 corpo douche bag trying to squeeze another cent out of volunteers.

is super cool once you see it in action.

For instance, you can visit the new StarTrek lemmy server here: https://startrek.website/c/startrek. Looks like a reddit sub with posts, threaded comments, upvotes, &c.

OR you can follow the same server on Mastodon ‪@startrek‬.
Every thread and comment shows up as a boosted post.

Cool, right? Now, say you find a comment that you want to reply to. Post through your favorite Mastodon app, and that feeds right back to the thread on the server! 🤯

@ozoned@beehaw.org avatar

Or say you wanna watch a video on Peertube. You can follow the channel from your Mastodon, watch the video in Mastodon, even comment on it, which then reflects into Peertube. It's how the web was designed! Everything interconnects! These walled gardens have broken the free and open internet. Let's fight for it come back!

Don't tell people "it's easy", and six more things KBin, Lemmy, and the fediverse can learn from Mastodon

https://privacy.thenexus.today/kbin-lemmy-fediverse-learnings-from-mastodon/

Reddit's strategy of antagonizing app writters, moderators, and millions of redditors is good news for reddit alternatives like KBin and Lemmy. And not just them! The fediverse has always grown in waves and we're at the start of one.

Previous waves have led to innovation but also major challenges and limited growth. It's worth looking at what tactics worked well in the past, to use them again or adapt them and build on them. It's also valuable to look at what went wrong or didn't work out as well in the past, to see if there are ways to do better.

Here's the current table of contents:

  • I'm flashing!!!!!
  • But first, some background
  1. Don't tell people "it's easy"
  2. Improve the "getting-started experience"
  3. Keep scalability and sustainability in mind
  4. Prioritize accessibility
  5. Get ready for trolls, hate speech, harassment, spam, porn, and disinformation
  6. Invest in moderation tools
  7. Values matter
  • This is a great opportunity – and it won't be the last great opportunity

Thanks to everybody for the great feedback on the draft version of the post!

Don't tell people it's "easy" anytime. Anything is easy when you know how to do it. Learning new things is difficult and telling someone it's easy just makes people feel dumb and that they can't do it. Encourage folks to learn.
