New arrival, a lovely boxed Mattel Aquarius. The box it a little beaten up but the manuals and keyboard overlay are all present

@peter@area51.social avatar

@jonn_blanchard A nice find, as there's not that many available due to how short it was on sale.

I managed to get one last August, but all I got was the machine, PSU & 16K memory, no box

My first family computer was an Osborne One. Now, let me hear about yours.

peter,
@peter@area51.social avatar

@vwbusguy my first was the TI99/4A.

This one wasn't the original, but the one I recently got running with the PEB underneath it - something I would have loved to have back in the day.

peter,
@peter@area51.social avatar

@vwbusguy The issue with the TI was that it was so slow due to it's architecture.

Processor was actually 16 bits but for some reason only 256 bytes of ram on the base machine - the 16K was in the video chip so the cpu couldn't access it directly & it was 8 bit.

Then the expansion memory was on a 3rd 8 bit bus, but at least the cpu could access it directly.

A shame as it could have been better

Air fryer has really upped my lunches game. Can bash out a “cook for 40 minutes” frozen chicken doodad in a third that time, chuck it in a wrap and garnish with a homemade cabbage and carrot slaw. A bit of careful meat thermometer application to ensure I don’t poison myself or totally dry the darn food out 🤣

peter,
@peter@area51.social avatar

@gadgetoid I can't remember when I last used the oven to cook anything as I've found the air fryer works brilliantly for almost everything the oven did

@gregly I know the feeling, got made redundant 2 weeks ago and not sure what to do next. Been catching up with things but I. A week or two will be looking for something else, just not sure what as after 20 years in the games industry I'm thinking of something else tech wise

In the early hours of this morning (around 01:30 BST) a network switch decided to die.

I was still powered but was just not switching traffic.

This caused my home automation, proxmox vm's and the weather station to go offline.

I only noticed this morning when the lights in the house wouldn't turn on.

I managed to get the minimal running with a spare, but not enough ports for everything.

An emergency same day order and now everything is back up and running....

What I learned when I replaced my cheap Pi 5 PC with a no-name Amazon mini desktop

Pi 5 is still an odd fit for day-to-day desktop use; cheap mini PCs come closer.

peter,
@peter@area51.social avatar

@arstechnica I have to say, I've got 3 of the Trigkey machines and they work really well, 32G ram 8 core 16 thread Ryzens, although I did replace the NVMe with 2Tb sticks, to max them out.

2 are running ProxMox whilst the third is now my desktop running Debian.

So far no issues, and the main aim of reducing power is great, compared to what they are replacing.

Still have room for a 2Tb sata SSD as well

peter,
@peter@area51.social avatar

@epistomai @arstechnica not tried it, but I did read it's the 32bit bios which is common on many machines which might cause it not to detect it.

Planning on adding another machine at some point so might try it with a larger drive to find out.

That said, memory wise, I did read they can handle 64gb of ram

peter,
@peter@area51.social avatar

@epistomai @arstechnica beeklink do look good except the price, but I'm happy with the 2tb limitations as if I need more storage then that's where the Nas comes into play.

For VMS they are brilliant, so far

peter,
@peter@area51.social avatar

@g7vkq @arstechnica I'll have to look at those, I'm happy with these ones but anything with low power is good for me in reducing the power bill

peter,
@peter@area51.social avatar

@g7vkq @arstechnica that's what I like these, they max out at 20W and that makes sense with today's prices

Hey everyone!

I'm working on a video to see what the Linux community (or at least people who follow me) actually use.

So, I created a little form, hosted on my Nextcloud (hopefully it's up to the task...)

It's only up for 2 days, so don't hesitate to share it around, it will help me "touch grass" and see if my preconceived notions are confirmed, or invalidated!

https://nextcloud.thelinuxexp.com/index.php/apps/forms/s/XQRzMrs8QTtCjDfSyP4koA9o

Of course, it's all anonymous, no personal data, it's just for the purposes of creating the video.

peter,
@peter@area51.social avatar

@thelinuxEXP I responded with my current desktop but I do use many others, I have a large network.

So the response was for the desktop, the laptop is Mint with zfs for the filesystem, but have other machines running Plex, Ubuntu, Debian & a couple of Mac's. The others are either microcontrollers or older 8 & 16 bit machines
