William Eaton - s/t / 1978 (Reissued 2020 by Morning Trip records). A blissful and uplifting record of instrumental guitar. The liner notes say some of it was recorded on a 26 string guitar Eaton built called an “Elesium Harmoniom”. It’s a beautiful set of spontaneous performances recorded “in a garden”. With everything going on, good to have some peaceful vibes coming through the speakers.

@mrcompletely @chris @Rosey @brucy he lives in my town (I live in his?) and we’ve crossed paths. Nit just at shows (tho also at shows) as our sins went the the same school for a bit. Nice guy, talented player, and an underrated songwriter.

It may not seem like it now, but during their time, the were a groundbreaking act. Their willingness to cover rock songs and contemporary material was antithetical to the bluegrass gatekeepers of the time.

They also kept their day jobs. "Seldom Scene" was coined because at first they only played once a week and didn’t stray too far from their Washington D.C. home base.

Their influence on later bands and newgrass in general is undeniable.

rowjimmy,
@rowjimmy@shakedown.social avatar

@mrcompletely @aburtch Love Seldom Scene.
Got on to them when I first heard “Rider” which Dr. Starling introduced despite some reluctance among the band. Now I have all of their 70s output on vinyl.

John Starling sure did have a great voice.

R.I.P. Ben Eldridge who recently passed.

I believe Tom Gray is the only original member still with us.

@aburtch @mrcompletely John’s son Jay is an amazing dobro player who currently plays keys in Leftover Salmon.

Both grew up here in Fredericksburg, VA where I happily reside.

Early warning: If you’ve considered buying my most recent LP but balked at the price (these lathe-cut things are made individually in real time, not en mass like pressed records) I get it.

The last few will be discounted on my Bandcamp page this Friday.
Don’t sleep.

Practicing for tomorrow's acoustic set promising to stop torturing myself with .012s and switch to .011s, but after the next string change because I have a fresh set of .012 DR Veritas strings to put on after these ones wear out and these things cost money.

rowjimmy,
@rowjimmy@shakedown.social avatar

@dave_heumann took my acoustic in for a checkup/setup a couple weeks ago and the guy was momentarily shocked when I told him I use .013s.

Promo I just saw:

Artist Omitted’s album, title omitted, has been out of print for years but is finally getting a reissue on vinyl!”

The album came out in 2019.

Repress it all you like, and I’ll even allow that someone may have been anticipating it but five years ain’t shit, people.

So, I'm a state of deep and increasing skepticism about the Threads integration, but I'm leaving the channel open for awhile to make a slow and considered decision about the impact. So far I have a lot of ambiguous thoughts but this post is about the reappearance via threads of the toxic Twitter behavior known as the "quote tweet dunk" and especially the QTD RT, where someone flexes their own QTD on some mook via a boost/RT. It's shitty and I'm blocking the people who do it.

rowjimmy,
@rowjimmy@shakedown.social avatar

@mrcompletely I’ve done it in the past on Twitter when Twitter was Twitter.
As ever, I’m attempting to be a better me so I will only be QTD’ing myself.

Today would be an excellent day to hit up my Bandcamp page and by the last remaining CDs from my first album, “Sunken Road”, and LPs from my third album, “So Below”.
Only a few left of each.

What do people like as far as external storage solutions for archiving these vast collections of media files and bullshit I keep accumulating? My Venn diagram encompasses reliability, size and affordability.

Speed is a lesser concern as long as I can watch the occasional MP4 movie off it without loading onto my primary drive. I've got almost 4tb of shit I need to access across at least two computers but it doesn't necessarily need to be networked, I can move it as needed. USB hookup.

    I missed this. Neil Young's music is returning to after a two year boycott. That catalyst seems to be the fact that Joe Rogan's podcast is no longer exclusive to Spotify. "Young has now said he can’t sustain his opposition across each of the streaming platforms, and will therefore return his music to Spotify."

    https://www.theguardian.com/music/2024/mar/13/neil-young-to-return-music-to-spotify-as-he-attacks-disinformation-across-streaming-services
