"Man know thyself." - Socrates
It's easy to know my likes and disllikes, but to truly know myself, I should understand my values, ethics, morals, character, perspectives, culture, politics, and probably my psychology and my philosophy . That sounds like a lot of time and effort. Why would I want to do that? Well if don't, I would have to rely on what other people tell me about myself. How could they know me? Most people don't even know themselves. Most people don't even like themselves.

@davidpalmer

You're probably being rhetorical, but:

The therapist I saw in 2021/22 subscribed to ACT - Acceptance and Commitment Therapy - which I found compelling.

After working on the Acceptance of feelings, and learning to observe them from outside myself, the Commitment part was about clarifying my values, and taking action to turn towards them.

But what are values, really?

I'm not sure this is the best link for it, but I think the free bit is a good overview:
https://www.shortform.com/blog/values-act/

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@davidpalmer so I don't think values have to be terribly complicated.

I want to show love to my family.
I want to have time for my family.
I want to find value in my work.
I want to feel valued in my work.
I want my life to feel somewhat balanced between work and free time.
I want to have enough free time to feel like myself.
I want to be kind.
I want to be inclusive.
I will not tolerate intolerance.

....etc

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@davidpalmer totally daunting.

But that's the crux of therapy, it takes work, it's not just 'offload and feel happier' though that'd be nice!

I also had to face up to the stuff I was less happy about confronting, compare it to my values, and make a commitment to turn away from it.

Not that I've succeeded in that (not sure anyone does, fully), but it's all heightened awareness stuff which is good, probably.

I've just opted in to being searchable on https://tootfinder.ch :)

Thanks @buercher 🦣🔎

Hellooo @mods have a bunch of new people joined lately? Feels like things are starting to slow down in terms of responsiveness...

But it might be a me problem rather than the instance?

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@mods interesting. Thanks for checking! I just seem to be waiting for the loading bar across the top to do its thing more often lately when changing views.

A few people have complained about crypto spam today, I got one too - maybe that's it..

Tootfinder is a third party opt-in site that lets you search public toots. Why not? https://tootfinder.ch/

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@tldr @hl @ruralgloom

Interesting! The last time someone on here tried to build something similar in public and was open about it and taking feedback, he got a ton of abuse for it.

Edit oooh it's opt-in. Also interesting!

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@tldr @hl @ruralgloom same, I'm trying to make myself searchable now...

I have come to understand some people still do not know color-scheme, and that it's a nice way to make dark mode scrollbars without doing the things @eric will tell you is a bad idea :)

So here you go!

And also massive thanks to @matuzo who first encouraged me to write up and post this article for his 2022 advent calendar:

sarajw,

@keithjgrant @eric ahahah. Yes. But I reckon the scrollbar is mostly ignored by people, and in some cases trying to style it possibly only makes it uglier.

Edit: sorry - I don't mean your styling would be ugly - but mobile browser and MacOS scrollers are quite pretty IMO. I'm a windows person with my private computer, and definitely feel the pull to style that thing away - but I think now that just having a light and a dark version of it is OK...

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@binarydigit 😆 that's a good reaction! What in particular made you go OOH!?

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@binarydigit yaaaaas. It's so cool, right?!

What's a bit of a pain is that those default dark mode colours (especially links and visited links) are a bit questionable in a couple of browsers - but people often style those differently anyway :)

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@binarydigit yeah my personal website stuff only gets JS if it's really something HTML/CSS can't do!

I do admit to enjoying having a framework to help with some bits and pieces though - my current favourite is @astro - their template really helped me get my website up and running as a blog :)

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

@lea thank you!!

Yeah it's cute isn't it - I guess wavy underlines are reminiscent of spellchecking/grammar - but I really like having them on hover :)

Wow - I realise I'm probably late to this but https://moderncss.dev is very good. The level of detail in the posts and the clarity of explanation is fantastic.

I've grown pretty weary of CSS over the last few years but this is making me excited about learning new stuff again! 🤩

Huge kudos @5t3ph and thanks for all the work you've put in on this.
