    I'll be taking next week off on SGW. Several reasons why, but generally busy. I'll be out of town for part of the weekend and....

    I bought a new car on Monday. My very first new car. For those who haven't, buying a new car is a Whole Fucking Process.

    So yeah. Taking the breather.

    @sashag@chaosfem.tw avatar

    @kelidanovus @Impossible_PhD When I need a car for longer distances (in German scale long, not in US 🤭) I rent one. My own car now is 13 years and I'm really emotionally attached to it, so I'll drive it for as long as I can.

    The renting allows you to try different ones. I mostly take a rather small one, as I really don't like large cars. (My current is a Renault Twingo, that's the size I like, but with an electric glass panorama ceiling, I hate opaque ceilings I can't open)

    But last time the rental company only had a different type available … a Mercedes EQA 250, which is a crossover. It was comfortable to drive, as long as I didn't drive into that car park from the 1970ties … no fun with such a wanktank 🫠

    Disclaimer: I've worked in automotive, for an EV only company. I love how quiet and smooth they are. And how they have rotational force right from the start. And how BMW drives at the traffic lights don't expect this 🫠

    @sashag@chaosfem.tw avatar

    @Impossible_PhD @EmilyGB2023 @kelidanovus I'll stick with a French car. I had a Renault Zoë (sorry 🫠) as a rental car and I'm in love!

    In Germany it's more important that the car fits into parking lots then that it is suitable for long distance rides.

    "Long distance" in Germany means 600km 🤭

    I hate amusement parks or theme parks. All of them, for as long as I can think back.

    And in this special case my (not very concrete) memories go back to somewhere around the age of 8 or 10. My parents tried to make me happy by going to an amusement park. I hated it from the first moment. When we were there for 10 minutes, I asked them if we could go home.

    All the fake scenery, that they took a perfectly fine piece of land and made it into the caricature of a landscape.

    The amusement rides that weren't amusing for me. What is so great about getting onto a ride makes you want to vomit?

    All the other people and especially the kids. God, how I hated these loud, boisterous kids, aggressively having fun.

    I'm now adult in the way that I avoided these parks for the last 45 years. I'm happy with this decision ☺️

    @byteborg Ih, I'm pretty good at this. And outside the parks they are not that energized. Most of them.

    I'm fine with kids playing and having fun around me. But in the parks they are on speed 🤭

    Now that I have returned to okcupid and they insist on showing me straight people, my random sampling of straight people in southern California on the app has revealed an important finding: being straight is bad for your skin!!!?!

    Seriously though, why do so many straight, cis women my age look like they are 10 or 20 years older than me? And like, I am used to us trans girls having estrogenated vampire skin, but even the cis lesbians have healthy skin well into their 40s and 50s.

    sashag,
    @sashag@chaosfem.tw avatar

    @rachel @JoscelynTransient One of the reasons I rarely visit these websites for staying connected with schoolmates.

    I look at pics of people exactly my age and I'm shocked.

    Or like my best (female cis) says: "Holy shit, your skin looks so soft!" 😳

    But indeed this would also work pretty well for being a candidate.

    "Don't look back, that's not where you're going" is a great rational advice.

    But the grief over lost time is an emotional thing for late transitioners. Logic does not cure emotions.

    But personally I don't see all these years as lost time as much as I don't feel like being "born in the wrong body".

    I got an opportunity only few people get: to experience the "other gender" from the inside. Not because I was a man, I've never been one and never felt like it. But because I was an explorer, disguised as a man, so I was able to see how men communicate with and act towards other (alleged) men.

    sashag,
    @sashag@chaosfem.tw avatar

    And I can tell you, it's wild. It does not make sense to me how much energy, resources and emotions men put in pretending to be as high as possible on an imaginary hierarchy.

    The men who taught me about a non toxic masculinity? Trans men. The self-reflection and consideration trans men put in creating their own way to be a man is incredible. 💕

    Grill lighter cubes! Rookies! Amateurs!

    Let me through ! I'm a chemist. And I have a liter of rectified spirits! And if needed a dewar full of liquid oxygen.

    But don't do this without being trained¹!

    ¹) by setting labs on fire for years

    @gdinwiddie Haha, yes. Do you know Theodore Grey? He had a video on a similar topic https://youtu.be/SS7n4kVL5kA

    Grey also has written some beautiful books about elements and molecules. At least for the elements book there also is an impressive (and impressively big) iPad app.

    @grrrr_shark I was at the institute of organic chemistry, when a graduate student's experiment went wrong. It exploded in a fume hood, the shock wave was so strong it blew open the explosion flap on top of the fume hood and all the windows on this floor.

    Luckily nobody was injured. So I could enjoy the spectacle of the firefighters running into the building in full protection suits with respirator masks, while Prof. Enders, the institute's head was strolling around the still smoking lab in a white dress shirt with rilled up sleeves 😂

    Something I tell my software students a lot when they’re looking for jobs is to remember that a shockingly large number of job descriptions are written by people in HR who have next to zero understanding of the industry, the specific team, or the business need.

    All they’ve got to work with is fragments they’ve heard without comprehension, coming to them through a terrible game of corporate telephone.

    1/

    sashag,
    @sashag@chaosfem.tw avatar

    @grimalkina @inthehands We should invite you for a talk or something. Honestly we do way better than most large industry organizations.

    And we write (and optimize) our own job descriptions. I never would a non-technical person let do that. Results are terrible and it's unfair to the HR people.

    The way HR works in all companies where I've been a hiring manager is that I do a lot of the actual "work" and get an HR assistant to do legal stuff etc. for me.

    Writing posts is my job. Talking to candidates is, too. Working on the process is and I expect HR to follow up with what I tell them I need.
