Heckuva job executing on the rebrand, Elon! 👏

Let's rename the company without first securing the account for that name. @x is already taken so the official account of the company formerly known as Twitter is... (wait for it) @twitter.

The @x name belongs to Gene X, a San Francisco based photographer. His tweets are now private, but the account still appears to be owned by Gene.

Today would be a beautiful day for Gene to reactivate his account and start promoting Threads. (Nothing personal, Mastodon, this is a street brawl.)

Has anybody else noticed that people who have always been privileged tend to be quite naive as well? To the point of gullibility - not noticing when a system or a person is trying to fuck them over, and not believing when this is pointed out.

(It makes sense that this would happen, because if you haven't been on the receiving end of being fucked over, why would you learn to look out for it?)

If this is true, I wonder if it explains a good part of resistance within academia to truly understanding or making real changes in response to the issues confronting minorities. In my experience, academics -- even those with a fair amount of power -- are just people. Usually they are actually kind, smart, good people doing their best. But, like all people, they have been heavily shaped by their environment and training. And the people with the power (in academia and probably in most places) are disproportionately people who have always been fairly privileged... so they simply don't see (or believe) the patterns that less-powerful people point out to them. They try -- they DO -- but their priors are so strong they can't help but conclude that these folks are overreacting, it isn't that bad, etc.

(Sometimes people ARE probably overreacting -- one can overgeneralise badly from prior experience in both directions -- but in my experience this is less common than under-reaction or minimisation)

Powerful people might give lip service to believing the patterns, but they don't believe at a deep level -- which you can see because without fail they fall for the latest grift the next time it happens. (Academics who swallow the "cancel culture" crocodile tears without thinking critically about where those narratives are coming from and whose goals they are serving, I'm looking at you; but this is just one example of many)

Dunno. Just thinking out loud, really.

A few weeks ago, I was very surprised to receive an email that my story, “Two Hands, Wrapped in Gold,” had been nominated for a Hugo Award for Best Novelette. As is customary, the awards team asked if I wished to accept the nomination or withdraw it from consideration. Unfortunately, I’ve decided to choose the latter option.

Please read my full explanation post here: https://sbdivya.com/fwords/2023/6/29/withdrawing-from-hugo-nominations

    Hello #WritingCommunity
Apparently #Google has changed their privacy policy and now says that they'll scrape everything you post online to train their AI tools.
I even post my #Fiction online on #Substack & my #Wordpress blog and now wonder if this is a bad idea.
They say paywalls could deter the scraping.
What do you think writers can do to protect their content? Or should we just roll over and accept that this is the way things will be from now on?
