Yeah.

It's good to be in the news again 😬🤘

spacegeck,
@spacegeck@astrodon.social avatar

@markmccaughrean oh good grief

spacegeck,
@spacegeck@astrodon.social avatar

@markmccaughrean I do love me a good HH object. I was looking at a few of them that recently went public. Haven't had a chance to download any, though. 😭

spacegeck,
@spacegeck@astrodon.social avatar

@markmccaughrean Hey, some of those MIRI/IFU images were taken on my birthday last year. And I'm happy today MAST is working fast today so I'll try downloading some goodies.

spacegeck,
@spacegeck@astrodon.social avatar

@markmccaughrean so funny, I just think of it as meditative rather than soul destroying. the chip gaps, on the other hand...

spacegeck,
@spacegeck@astrodon.social avatar

@markmccaughrean Yup, earlier this year, Jan 25. My birthday!

A belated “good morning.”

@spacegeck@astrodon.social avatar

@mcnees I missed these

futurebird, to random

It's really interesting to me how these magic anti-radiation stickers, look a little like a wireless charging coil... And are even placed like one on a phone... using a real technology to add realism to the fake. They also look like the maze of the Minotaur. (I have a thing for things that blend old and new graphic forms like this... and I'm fascinated by scam products. )

I guess the radiation gets lost in the maze.

spacegeck,
@spacegeck@astrodon.social avatar

@futurebird one time I bought an electric blanket and one of its features is that it doesn't produce an electromagnetic field. I'm happy that feature doesn't work, because the blanket does indeed work.

I totally missed it, but this image released yesterday and I'm told it was featured widely. Didn't know this was Chandra's Halloween release. 😆 https://chandra.harvard.edu/photo/2023/msh1552/

This view of IC348 from JWST is also just sitting in the archive. Really quick processing; didn't clean up all of the cosmic rays.

F444W, F360M, F277W

spacegeck,
@spacegeck@astrodon.social avatar

this actually is a really good Halloween pic with appropriate processing... 😆

spacegeck,
@spacegeck@astrodon.social avatar

@markmccaughrean maybe they did, but the release cycle is lagging behind the proprietary period a bit. It's low-hanging fruit so I can't see it missing from a public image release for super long.

spacegeck, to random
@spacegeck@astrodon.social avatar

Oh well, enjoy this low-effort view of M82 from JWST comprised of pipeline images that had the least problems.

NIRCam F360M, F335M, F250M

spacegeck,
@spacegeck@astrodon.social avatar

@badastro I hope in the future a whole mosaic can be made. this is something like 1/6th of the galaxy. just a little square of the center.

spacegeck, to random
@spacegeck@astrodon.social avatar

It's been a while since I've gone to the MAST to find some data... I'm just so sad to see the alignment issues persisting so long. I guess this is just what the pipeline is going to produce, isn't it? This is it.

Mostly blurred/misaligned stars in the galaxy M82. A few areas are nice. To be clear, It should all look nice. Stars should be dots, not smears. I can make a clear image if I download less processed images and align them manually. It just sucks.

gettin kinda mad at all these DALL-E images showing up in my feed tricking me into thinking they're some kind of odd actual data or a misguided attempt at illustrating some astrophysical thing only to have the alt text say it's a DALL-E prompt. just feel deceived every time

spacegeck,
@spacegeck@astrodon.social avatar

@fraser Using real data or real illustrations from real artists. It feels like I'm getting algorithmed all over again like over at Twitter with the AI generated images. They're just so specifically made to scratch that itch in the human brain for seeing something "awesome" but then it falls apart so quick after that. Like, it just makes no sense after it grabs my attention.

When NASA began doing science with JWST, Jupiter was one of their first targets. That first picture was bizarre, yet familiar, with an infrared view into the atmospheric bands circling the planet, the Great Red Spot, and ghostlike auroras. But something was hiding in that picture: a high-speed jet stream stretching 4,800 km across the cloudtops, with winds traveling over 500 km/h. Astronomers looked at images taken 10 hours apart, tracking the jet stream's movements.

@fraser lol, that image... 😩

@fraser Nope! It's a copy.

We learned from
@markmccaughrean working at ESA that G'MIC & @GIMP are sometimes used to process images from the JWST (James Webb Space Telescope).
For instance, both were used for the image that made the cover of @Nature (23/10). Free software for good science!😍
To infinity and beyond! 🚀

@gmic @markmccaughrean You're very much welcome. Makes me happy to see it.

Just stunned by how beautiful and well-crafted Reservation Dogs has been. A few episodes left.

spacegeck,
@spacegeck@astrodon.social avatar

@mcnees heh, my friend said they were filming that in okmulgee (my old home town) at some point. I think they also advertised wanting to cast a tall, handsome native man to the locals, too. 😆 good to hear that something good came out of that neck of the woods

kevinmgill, to random

He actually had some good suggestions for the code I was writing…

video/mp4

spacegeck,
@spacegeck@astrodon.social avatar

@kevinmgill it's made it this far without becoming a wasp target... 😆

spacegeck,
@spacegeck@astrodon.social avatar

@kevinmgill maybe a tomato, as someone else alluded to... looks like a tomato hornworm. It must have come from someone's garden or got transported somehow. they become a really cool moth.

And here's one from Jonathan O'Callaghan at the New York Times (paywalled, but hopefully some of you will have access 😼)

https://www.nytimes.com/2023/10/02/science/orion-nebula-webb-planets.html

spacegeck,
@spacegeck@astrodon.social avatar

@markmccaughrean @juliengirard Oh, you definitely want to combine them. This is where you get to find all the things that moved.

spacegeck,
@spacegeck@astrodon.social avatar

@markmccaughrean @juliengirard Right, I figured. I'm probably not going to make my own version anytime soon, then.

spacegeck,
@spacegeck@astrodon.social avatar

@markmccaughrean @juliengirard Maybe it's pointless, maybe you see something cool. I've found that nearly every time, I find something cool. It's rarely scientifically "interesting" but it's always fun and I love showing little blink animations to people. I have no stakes in the game and am content to wait until astronomers have long discarded their data to start messing with it. I swear, though, some people would rather it get deleted than ever be open with it. Sigh.
