@yuvharpaz Does't look like an artifact to me, though I'm not sure. The histogram looks a little clipped and it's pretty hard to see what kind of context this is

What does a galaxy with no dark matter have in common with a dog farting in a car?

Find out here:

@badastro I am slightly curious to know how a MOND supporter would explain this particular galaxy 🤔

Game designer Gary Gygax, who co-created Dungeons & Dragons with Dave Arneson, was born in 1938.

He had some lame views about women being able to enjoy RPGs (and who knows what else). But he’s not the boss of enjoying D&D, so I hope you enjoy it with especial relish today.

spacegeck,
@spacegeck@astrodon.social avatar

@mcnees to this day I'm always "healer bro" in the pick-up groups that can't hear my voice in WoW. healer bro needs mana. one time I mentioned having to take care of the toddler for a moment and someone in the group told me to "dump her" for not doing it for me

Let me tell you about the greatest color-by-numbers of all time.

The first up-close photo of Mars was taken in 1965 by the Mariner 4 spacecraft.

But it doesn't look like much, right? Grainy and blotchy and hard to tell what exactly you're looking at.

spacegeck,

@mcnees I just realized I have been looking at that tape recorder image the wrong way this whole time

Hopeful request:

Does anyone out there have the machinery, interest, & skills to compile the current version of GIMP with the latest G'MIC-Qt plugin for an M1 Mac?

Partha at www.partha.com made a version in 2020, but there are new destriping filters in G'MIC-Qt that would be very helpful for JWST work.

I've tried building it myself, but it keeps failing on things I'm not savvy enough to fix.

Please boost for maximum spread 🙂👍

@markmccaughrean @andrealuck @AkaSci @65dBnoise @kevinmgill @stim3on

Can only confirm that you definitely want the new version as it takes the manual labor out of doing a bunch of little tiles of denoising, which is why you get good results in the preview but bad results in the whole view. That's what I was doing before the update... Denoising one small square at a time.

spacegeck,
@spacegeck@astrodon.social avatar

@markmccaughrean @65dBnoise @kevinmgill @stim3on @AkaSci @andrealuck

I tried some of the other stuff, but banding denoise is the only thing that seemed necessary.

spacegeck,
@spacegeck@astrodon.social avatar

@markmccaughrean @gmic @65dBnoise @kevinmgill I assume the 100% zoom is because a zoom out would be more image to process and it would take too long. IIRC tiling size was fine at 256px. I tried going smaller and it didn't matter much. I've been doing Chandra image processing lately so haven't looked at JWST in a while.

spacegeck,
@spacegeck@astrodon.social avatar

@markmccaughrean @gmic @kevinmgill @65dBnoise I had to manually mask those away. The nebulosity isn't nearly as noticeable as the artifacts it leaves on little disk galaxies etc tho. still feels bad either way

Look who just walked in after almost four weeks 😱🥰

He’s lost a lot of weight & scarfed down a plateful of food in seconds, but otherwise apparently very noisily happy to be home 😺

I’m speechless & hugely grateful that the universe continues to move in mysterious ways 🙇‍♂️

Free at last!
The 16m long Radar for Icy Moons Exploration (RIME) antenna on the ESA Juice spacecraft, which had been stuck for a month after unfolding 2 of its 6 segments, is finally free 🛰️ 🎉

A mechanical device called a ‘non-explosive actuator’ (NEA), located in the jammed bracket was fired today. The resulting shock moved the stuck pin just enough to allow the antenna to break free and unfold.

I undertook the DECEPTIVELY simple task of buying a small filing cabinet to replace the overfill fabric box where I was storing paperwork.

Such a good idea (I thought)! More spacious and disaster proof!

Discovered filing cabinet drawers weren’t tall enough to hang files, and a frame was needed.

Bought frame.

Files too narrow to hang.

How are files not a standard size?! How are hanging frames in a filing cabinet also not standard?

How is this disaster-proofing task itself a disaster? 🧐

spacegeck,

@mkj @elizabethtasker came here to wonder the same thing... A4 is a little taller, so presumably would reach the rail

Link to an animation showing Chandra x-ray observations of point sources around Centaurus A blinking on and off, and some of them fading https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ila8vNLlR4XezvVZOwJtL6L5xm_nnn2Q/view?usp=share_link

There are some artifacts still there, but I tried to get rid of most of them. Note the shape of the point sources changes depending on their position on the detector and different instrument modes

Don't think I'll ever get tired of watching G'MIC take care of banding problems. This is from an old image of LDN 1527 that I remembered was terrible. Figured I could revisit and see if I could do it better now.

A smoothed out version of the same image with much of the banding removed.
