    Could dam disaster be a structural failure, as suggested by some international media?

    To be honest, it just doesn't look like one in any way. If you imagine driving from right (N) to left bank (S) of Dnipro, the dam consists of the bridge that contains overflow gates and then enters the machine room building. On the now historic photo 1 below the bridge extends from left to right, and machine building is on the right.

    Photo 2 shows today's damage from a drone looking S to N, as if drone was hovering above the machine building. It shows huge breach in the bridge (middle of the photo) with huge water flow, but also the machine building partially destroyed with a shallow water flow through the rubble. Photo 3 shows why it looks so weird: only a middle section of the machine building is destroyed and it looks like it's, the section adjacent to the bridge is still standing!

    My intuition is that if that was a structural damage, it would start from the bridge and then expand both sides, collapsing exactly that end of machine building that is still standing.

    It would be also very deep, as water would break and remove concrete from under the building first, then causing the roof to collapse. The part of machine building that has actuated collapsed is the opposite — as if the roof collapsed and the water barely flows through the rubble.

    Nobody reported any incoming rockets, bombs or missiles. Past HIMARS attacks barely damaged the road on the bridge. It looks like the dam was breached in at least two places and it doesn't look like a structural damage from high water, which makes the Ukraine's accusations towards Russian 205 brigade the most likely version of events.

    @kravietz Since at least Oct 2022, the Ukrainians have been warning that Russia was planning to destroy the dam -- and then blame Ukraine for it. I've seen several articles from that time. It seems improbable, if not impossible, that a structural failure would have occurred without Russian intervention to help it along.
