I am an ageing husband to an amazing woman as we try to figure out how to be good parents to an adult while coping with being recovering addicts, lo-fi vintage nerd who won't throw old tech away because disposable culture is the worst, curretly repairing industrial machines for a living but secretly wants to be a #smolweb developer and wishing to change careers, generally wondering how I got here in the first place because man, it has been quite a ride.

Constantly trying to improve.

just realized i've had the mollywhite.net domain for over 10 years(!!)

related sneak peek into an upcoming piece: i firmly believe that if you're going to spend money on one thing online it should be a domain, particularly as online identity gets more fragmented. as platforms come and go, you can always find me there.

@molly0xfff

This is a big reason why I have wanted to start a blog; not because I have a lot to say, but for the sake of a stable online identity. I go all the way back to the Friendster/Livejournal days, and as each platform either died or I left due to enshittification, all that history and individual growth was lost (you know, like tears in the rain). It's an odd thing, but important to consider with modern identity.

How much alone time vs socializing do you need?

For me there are a few people who are usually equalizing, and I can just be around them, so I won't count that. But generally, I find about 3 times a week, I'm game for socializing. A day in between to rest is usually nice, but the larger the gathering or if we go somewhere particularly noisy or I'm meeting new people that involves more effort, and my social battery empties sooner. I'm very curious where everyone else falls on this!

@Ttubretep @RickiTarr it's super tough! My wife and I just hosted a garage sale. A couple about our age who were also tech enthusiasts stopped by and chatted for awhile, they said they were kinda looking for friends in the area. We exchanged contact info, but then nobody did anything. It's like we're all afraid to just try hanging out and see if we jive, like there's this weighted expectation that things have to work out or we're bad people or something.

Silly, really.

@RickiTarr @Ttubretep as one should be! I am the same way, although I could tell that this couple was mostly (if not entirely) aligned with my own values just from the conversation we had.

I really should reach out to them. In fact, I think i will do that today.

Rescued a meme without alt-text.

Beyond including , the original version of what is now called monopoly had a cooperative or "Prosperity" mode.

The whole point of the game was to show how competing for profit destroys society!

The game was created to be a "practical demonstration of the present system of land grabbing with all its usual outcomes and consequences".

@FantasticalEconomics
So, Parker Bros not only developed their own version of Landlord just in case negotiations to buy the patent fell apart, bought the patent, bought another similar game from someone else, etc etc. They bought the competition so they'd have the hottest game in town called...Monopoly?

Nearly TPK’ed but for a heretofore unknown ability that revealed itself from the legendary sword that just came into our possession 😬

@FlockOfCats well now I need to hear about the sword's previously-unknown ability

What is a little white lie you were told as a child, that you believed for too long?

I was way too old when I figured out a human couldn't actually get sucked down a drain or flushed down a toliet. I used to cling to my little brothers, and pull them out of the bath any time my Mum would pull to plug.

My grandma told me eating olives will give me nightmares when I was a wee tinsmith. Lived with that through childhood.

At around age 14, I realized it was because she wanted me to stop eating her danged olives every time we came over.

I'm giving Mastodon a shot again, but with different goals than last time, so I suppose another post is in order?

I am many things, but typically, I am a bumbling husband, awkward father, recovering alcoholic, ageing computer enthusiast, generalized anxiety disorderer, wannabe smol web developer, science fiction fan, D&D play-by-poster, repair tech, patch collector and worker rights advocate.

I want to change careers with the hope of eventually doing the digital nomad thing.

Benefits of working in the company's HQ: from time to time you have the possibility to smash decommissioned servers with a sledgehammer.

I don't work in the company's HQ :blobfoxangrylaugh:

There's a dead blade server leaning up against the rack at my work. I am just waiting for the day. I even have the exact route and point of interception planned to nab it just before it hits the dumpster.
