A 3rd Century AD, Scutum of Dura-Europos is the only surviving example of a Roman scutum shield. It was found found in Syria. The wood was well preserved by the dry climate.

While I fundamentally disagree with the wholly instrumental view of education (that its just about preparing workers for work), given this is largely the view of the Tories, their treatment of arts education is either economically illiterate or driven by non-economic reassign....

I suspect its the latter; whatever the arts economic contribution, the right seems just to hate the creative sector & so their policy disregards their own economic logic!

You may recall a year ago Trudi Walter held up a sign out side court reminding jurors in a trial of environmental protesters that 'You have an absolute right to acquit a defendant according to your conscience', which she took to be a statement of the existing law.

The Attorney General's office took a different view & has prosecuted for contempt of court for interfering in the conduct of the trial.

@ChrisMayLA6 So presumably the jury in the trial are going to see the sign she was holding up, in a trial where the point is that seeing the sign might influence a jury to acquit someone being prosecuted under an unfair law. Could be interesting.

@yogthos Meanwhile the bridge is to replace an old ferry. The customers have never seen a bridge and have only the vaguest idea of how one works. The specification document has detailed requirements for the passenger terminals, lifeboats and engines which are non-negotiable.

@philip_cardella @lin11c @RealJournalism When you have a thinly traded stock with heavy shorting, it can easily become a Short Squeeze. Lots of people borrow the shares and sell them. Other speculators buy them up and then lend them out again. So now you have more shares outstanding than actually exist. The short sellers are legally required to buy back the shares whatever the price, but they can't get them, so the price goes up indefinitely and shorts go bankrupt.

You might look at a share and decide, based on honest skill and judgement, that it looks cheap and will go up, so you buy. Or you might decide (as in this case) that it's only going down, so you short it.

Inside knowledge just lets you cheat either way.

@dashrb @philip_cardella @lin11c @RealJournalism That's right. So now Trump's company looks like it might go the same way. But if it happens it won't be much benefit to Trump. Regardless of the nominal value, if he decides to unload his shares the price will just collapse anyway. The only people who think there's any value in Truth Social are suckers.

So, it now transpires that in the middle of the Horizon IT debacle Paula Vennells claimed that sub-post masters were likely to be tempted to steal by having large amounts of money in their tills...

when as we now know actually it was here & her associates who were tempted to steal by fraud by covering up IT problems they were aware of.

And just in case you had forgotten Vennells has served as an Anglican priest...

She really is a 'piece of work'...
