I've noticed that the happiest families amongst my cousins are the ones where for various reasons the parents couldn't hover over the kids too much.

Like one of my cousins had triplets and the parents both worked and everything over there was more like running a small girl scout troop than helicopter parenting. During the baby shower the mom just sent us a big spreadsheet with enormous quantities of baby wipes and diapers, and begged us not to gift any adorable shit. I once ran into them at

@troutgirl@hachyderm.io avatar

The farmers market, and they each had one triplet strapped to them plus one in a tiny stroller.

Another cousin was the sole breadwinner for their family, so when she got pregnant with a late-in-life baby she basically just handed it over to her two 8 year old girls. They treated the kid exactly like a baby doll, and he thrived!

@troutgirl@hachyderm.io avatar

The families with a SAH spouse and super high expectations for the kids are rife with divorce, depression, and financial problems. Also their kids aren't more successful than their cousins who weren't forced into years of stuff they didn't care about but were deemed "important" by the parents.

It's just anecdotal but I have a LOT of cousins lol :D

I adore asparagus, but only by itself -- I can't stand any dish with asparagus in it. No pasta, no risotto, no stir fry, ESPECIALLY no salad with it raw! I once made my dad a special April lasagna with fresh noodles and homemade bechamel and spring veggies, and even then I was convinced it was ruined by the asparagus.

This is actually 19% less risk of all-causes mortality WITHIN TWO YEARS from ADHD meds. To give you a sense of how massive that is: people like me who had brain aneurysms have 2% excess mortality every year and that is considered one of the bigger unseen health time bombs.

Although I deplore that biodata about Trump's jurors in the Stormy Daniels case has leaked, it's FASCINATING. They seated almost entirely college or grad school educated professionals -- more lawyers than I've ever seen on a jury, lots of computer people, quite a few immigrants. Jury foreman from Ireland. Gotta conclude that so far Trump's team is not covering itself in legal glory.

Starting a thread about my life with Cookie, while she’s in intensive care right now in San Francisco. She’s still conscious, but it’s not looking great. Even if she gets to come home I think it’s time to prepare to say goodbye to her.

  1. This was the very first time I saw her.

I was 24 years old. I’d just moved to Petaling Jaya, Malaysia. With the first serious girlfriend I had. We thought it’d be a great idea to get a dog.

I took a pic of the moment I saw Cookie in Damansara Uptown

It's my birthday weekend tomorrow and I guess I'm hosting a party? And we are going to be eating a quite luxurious sushi bake (lobster, shrimp, salmon, rockfish) and al pastor tacos cooked on tiny trompos!

@coldclimate I emptied my freezer of all the seafood we caught, were gifted, or bought on sale :)

Fun fact: One reason Trump so desperately wants absolute immunity is so he doesn't have to worry about legal blowback from ordering US troops to shoot American citizens, like he tried to do, over and over again, when he was President. https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-features/trump-supreme-court-immunity-seal-team-six-1235001541/

troutgirl,
@troutgirl@hachyderm.io avatar

@stevesilberman According to numerous witnesses, he is so out of touch that he doesn't realize shooting a human in the leg with a military weapon of any kind could result in them dying quite gruesomely!

Got suckered into a (brief) discussion on a @mekkaokereke thread at the Bad Place with one of those guys who... if someone is excellent, they say s/he didn't need DEI, if they're slightly less excellent they say s/he only got the job through DEI. Meanwhile, being born into an upper middle class white family is still the most common form of unmerited promotion.

We really had it all, for a moment

RSS, for a moment, was an invitation for every single website to participate in any sort of application developers could imagine

And they DID it was the thing

Everyone had RSS. News sites. Social platforms. Indie blogs. Government portals.

It enabled a fundamentally new chapter of the web, while simultaneously being invisible, save for a few affordances sprinkled between UI chrome and page content

troutgirl,
@troutgirl@hachyderm.io avatar

@danilo I often wonder how much of tech people's performative grief over the end of Google Reader was actually grief over RSS. Because I recall Reader being not-great.

One of the worst post-Covid issues I have is that I can’t taste bitter flavors anymore. Some would think this is a good thing, but all the foods and drinks I love are enhanced by their bitter flavors, so this takes a lot of the enjoyment from me.

@danilo The Tumblr thing is a little concerning, given how much of that community was VERY young, women, LGBTQ+, and people of color.

Why is it that when I interview for a job, it's all about best practices... but when I actually see the code, it's just a big a mess as if you'd done it quick and dirty? Most of the codebases I've worked on would take a LOT of work to be in compliance with even the most basic tenets of good code -- but that's what everyone talks about 24/7!!!

Whenever people talk about "doing their own research" these days, I think to myself... I wonder how much they've spent this year on research papers? It's super hard to do any meaningful research these days without spending some money -- and when a university or other org isn't paying, it adds up QUICK. I think the last paper I wanted cost $22 (I asked the lead author for a PDF copy, he isn't in the field anymore and refused). Watching YouTube videos isn't research, except maybe in film studies.

Something that’s been on my mind for a while:

Sometimes I read Americans here having very absolutist ideas on ‘freedom’ or ‘democracy’. For example, ‘why do people live in Dubai when it’s an autocracy?’ I can tell you why.

My Syrian friends, who no longer have a home, live there because they won’t ever get a visa for the U.S., nor anywhere else in the western world.

My skilled Iranian best friend who just got his life upended by a Canadian visa that took 3 whole years then rejected.

troutgirl,
@troutgirl@hachyderm.io avatar

@skinnylatte Yes but also things change fast in immigration law! I was among the first wave of Asian immigrants after we got the franchise in 1965, and at that time we were considered smelly slant-eyes who would never assimilate properly and were out to undermine minimum wage jobs and/or exploit ghetto residents. Now most South Koreans are considered to have "good" passports. When I was a child we did not value Ukrainian immigrants very highly -- Reagan paid for a shit ton of them with like
