"Background Knowledge" is about Git pre-commit hooks, but also about lesson design: https://third-bit.com/2024/04/22/background-knowledge/

trs,
@trs@metasocial.com avatar

@gvwilson I don't have any help off hand for the lesson design bit—that's a huge topic—but it's not running because the hook is "pre-commit" not "pre-commit.sh". Git's not even looking at "pre-commit.sh". (core.hooksPath is a red-herring here. The built-in default is fine.)

trs,
@trs@metasocial.com avatar

@gvwilson I don’t see where an example script has .sh? I do see this in the “official explanation” you linked:

“If you want to use the bundled hook scripts, you’ll have to rename them; their file names all end with .sample. To enable a hook script, put a file in the hooks subdirectory of your .git directory that is named appropriately (without any extension) and is executable.”

$4K may not sound like much to people that work in tech. But for some of the people that were targeted with the lure of getting into tech, $4K was crushing.

People thought I was unnecessarily harsh when I called the Lambda school folks out over the years. It would appear that I was not.

@mekkaokereke you opened my eyes to what was happening at Lambda School back on Twitter when Austen was pushing a very popularly praised (and easily believed, for me at least) story.

So far, it appears you can be a "Feng shui" expert by making up whatever dang thing you want and writing it down. Also, they believe in ghosts.

@ai6yr @mjausson @exador23 ha, I get it. I showed up to PHL one time for a flight and didn’t realize I entirely forgot shoes until my bare feet hit the airport parking lot. It was August, and I often walked barefoot around my folks’ property.

Today in ridiculously specific tools... if you ever have data that's been gzipped and then base64-encoded and you need to see what's in it, my new "base64 decode and then un-gzip" tool is for you! https://observablehq.com/@simonw/base64-decode-and-then-un-gzip

Built because I'm using pytest-recording and it turns out it sometimes stores base64-gzipped responses in YAML files https://github.com/datasette/datasette-embeddings/issues/4#issuecomment-2019434028

@simon I'm genuinely curious: why not just use base64 -d | gunzip?

“countless professors, when asked to perform a peer review for a journal, fob the work off to their hapless grad students”

Having been through the fact-checking process at the Times repeatedly, I can’t understand how nonsense like this gets through.

I can only speculate the perhaps these days their fact-checkers fob the work off to hapless interns.

New pedal day!

Test ride up and down the street felt great. Can’t wait to see how they feel on the evening preschool run.

Close up of a single bright blue pedal with many studs, branded DMR Vault.

trs,
@trs@metasocial.com avatar

@grivettcarnac Yep! One of the first things swapped out when I got it back in mid-2019 were the pedals. The stock ones at the time were crap for grip. These new pedals today are a big step up from the affordable composites with molded pegs that I initially swapped for though!

I assume if it's your first winter with an e-cargo bike that it's relatively new to you? If so, congrats and welcome to the club! We're happy to have you. :-)

trs,
@trs@metasocial.com avatar

@grivettcarnac Nice! A fat bike is something I've long thought would be fun and useful to have, but one still eludes me...

Cargo bikes are such a game changer, right?! Definitely a car replacement for me.

Before getting the Bullitt I test rode a Load 75 and it was a super plush, smooth ride. Really nice bike and appealing for sure. But the Bullitt had already stolen my heart years before, a test ride of one only cemented that, and in the end it wasn't really a choice for me.

Beekeeping failure analysis notes: 20 lbs or so of honey applied to small plastic molded bottom against a wood floor results in cracking. Lost 2.5 gallons to the floor. 2 gallons recovered and will go to bee feeding.

trs,
@trs@metasocial.com avatar

@ai6yr oh boy, if only we could have combined that with my big mess of 4 gallons of concentrated laundry detergeant spilled on the tile floor, under walls, under carpet, etc.

The floor doesn’t feel like surfactants any more, but it still suds up if you get water on it.

    @gvwilson OTOH, you can always add a required version field when you first need a backwards-incompatible change and then "lack of a version field means it's version 0".
