Lot of chatter about diss tracks in the wake of Kendrick eviscerating Drake. But haven’t seen much mention of the greatest indie diss track of all time, “Singer Songwriter” by Okkervil River. Will Scheff claims it is about no one in specific (I don’t believe him) but that just makes it more fun.

The fucked up part of the ad blocker debate is using one is stealing. The ads literally pay the writers, developers & everyone who makes the web content possible. You might as well steal a book from a book store or sneak into a movie without paying.

BUT, the web has gotten so fucked up in how it violates privacy, collects & uses consumer data (not to mention the pervasiveness of the ads), that using an ad blocker is totally justifiable.

@chopaganda @NGIZero is throwing away junk mail stealing? is skipping over pages of ads in newspapers or magazines stealing? fast forwarding through ads on digital recordings or VCRs? or must we read/view every one to completion?

hint: none of it is stealing ~ you own your time and network and computer resources, not them

@chopaganda @NGIZero doesn't "strip" ads ~ it throws the bytes away after download and not present them on page or alternately refuses to retrieve from those ad URLs ~ also doesn't take money from artists because they still get paid based on page loads ~ it's the ad buyers upset because they pay on ads no one watched...but who watches the ads anyway?

tangentially here's a fun game to play: "spot the lie" ~ every ad contains a lie ~ first one to spot the lie everyone else drinks

@mrcompletely this is an interesting idea for sure ~ perhaps it could even use AI to generate content but with a particular twist ~ for example, setup an AI input that goes out and grabs the world news each day and then spins positive imaginary versions of each story that instead paints a picture of international unity and the steady march of the global community towards peace, environmental sustainability, and justice ~ in short, bend the world’s mindshare towards goodness

The latest date to be added on the unannounced winter Shabaka Hutchings tour is: Town Hall 2/22/24. The only two other known US dates are the "album debut" on 1/15 in NYC, and the Newmark show here in on 2/23.

There's no info about the album is or who is on it, or who will play these west coast dates. Shabaka is IMO the best live performer in music today so I don't care, but the NYC show includes Brandee Younger and Esperanza Spalding 🤞
