So a favourite story about the crack in Victor Bay pictured with the ATV. A few years back no crack formed there, it happens some times. We went out to Qikiqtalik Nuvua on the Canada long weekend to camp, and to hunt on Admiralty Inlet.

We returned and there was still no crack. We had been using my BIL’s snowmobile and left it on the ice by the beach.

About a week later the ice came free of the shore prior to break up. I went down to get the snowmobile.

Mac users: if you're a fan of The Unarchiver but you're annoyed by the analytics and stuff the new owners have been putting in, give Keka a try. It's free (or $7 on the app store), and so far it seems to support pretty much anything The Unarchiver does.

what do canadian men do during playoff hockey intermissions?

argue referee calls? trash each others teams?

let out-catting each other be the gold standard for masculinity in 2024 😂

I am happy that the Wizardry remake is good (I tried it just a little this morning) and has been well received. I had a good time with the Bard's Tale remake of a few years ago. I'd love to see other classics like Might & Magic 1 and Pool of Radiance get some love, too!

vga256,
@vga256@dialup.cafe avatar

@ThreeOhFour i’m very encouraged by the extra UX work put into deep zooms and object focus mechanics. while they don’t really make a game fun, they’re the kinds of attention to detail that give me confidence in the team building it

vga256,
@vga256@dialup.cafe avatar

@ThreeOhFour that’s so funny to hear, when i consider riven to be one of the most difficult exploration based puzzle games i’ve ever played. 😅i only managed to finish myst once for the same reasons - 15 years ago, on a 24 hour train ride

vga256,
@vga256@dialup.cafe avatar

@ThreeOhFour totally. it’s my level of difficulty 😅

this illustration was commissioned for a type-in program called Islands for the commodore 64, in the august 1988 issue of RUN magazine.

i am in love with the line-art/woodcut style, painstakingly inked and coloured. it was a different age in which a work of art could be commissioned for a BASIC game that a handful of people in the world would bother to hand-code and play.

this is better art than 90% of the physical big box games i own

update: as it turns out, there is not merely emulating etching/woodcut with inked lines, it IS an etching by artist doug smith who was famous for this style.

@christianmlong 😆 people love to wax nostalgic about type-in mags, but doing the dirty work was absolutely awful

@vga256@dialup.cafe avatar

oh hell yes. i think i just found the original typeface used: it was LTC Spire by the Lanston Type Company

edit: it led to a fascinating web preservation backstory about the origins of the font itself:
