And this is why you don’t store floppies next to acidic paper.

misty,
@misty@digipres.club avatar

@foone Right??

When it was sent to me, all the floppies had been relocated to an acid-free paper sleeve - I guess a previous owner had noticed and knew what to do. But I guess they still spent a couple decades nestled up to the manual.

Reprinted and back in stock on our website: STUPID GUY GOES TO INDIA, an autobiographical manga chronicling the adventures of Yukichi Yamamatsu, whose missionary zeal for spreading manga culture inspired him to leave Japan for the first time at the age of 56 to move to Delhi, without knowing any English or Hindi, and try to start a publishing company. Hilarious hi-jinks ensue!

While browsing Xbox Game Pass, I found a game called The Big Con that has a specific 1990s aesthetic to the visual style. And then they started playing a Rockapella-like theme song. And I thought "nice, they really copied the style".

Nope.

They hired Rockapella.

@textfiles I didn’t realize that was actually them! That’s great

Looks like the same attack that took down the British Library for so long also targeted the US Library of Congress, but good multifactor auth and fast action from their IT and security staff protected them. https://www.nextgov.com/cybersecurity/2024/05/thwarted-cyberattack-targeted-library-congress-tandem-october-british-library-breach/396399/

Thinking again about Phil Collins's vast collection of fake Alamo artifacts

Provenance is always a tough question for private collectors; working with a celebrity donor has got to be tough if you're not politically comfortable with asking the tough questions about whether these items are real or not.

I was recently reminded of this great older post in the Library of Congress Blog about the time an unreleased PSP Duke Nukem game was found in the copyright deposit archives - source code, assets and all. https://blogs.loc.gov/thesignal/2014/08/dukes-legacy-video-game-source-disc-preservation-at-the-library-of-congress/

Aaand, fully good rip! Good thing too, the other copy I've seen around had a couple bad disks. The person who lent this to me has been hoping to get a full flux rip of every disk.

Also putting the call out: if you have the original Prolog version of The Manhole for Mac (the edition before Activision picked it up), please contact me. My friend would really appreciate the chance to have a raw flux dump of this version.

The fact Microsoft keeps releasing historical versions of DOS under the MIT license is fascinating to me. https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/04/microsoft-and-ibm-release-source-code-for-one-of-the-weirdest-versions-of-ms-dos/

My most nuclear take is that the people whose origins have granted them the most success and leverage in technical fields are the least equipped to caliper the potential individual impact of LLMs on certain axes of economic marginalization

This is a good example of why I think that:

@danilo I wonder if this is going to lead to a situation where hiring managers pick up on “GPT-ese” and assume these kinds of cover letters are written by AI rather than with grammatical assistance from AI… I remember the curl maintainer talking about naking sure not to dismiss issues that read like AI text out of hand for that reason, but then that making it harder to filter out actual AI-generated spam issues.

Anyone have recommendations on a good git blame GUI? I used to just use GitHub, but ever since they switched to their new frontend code it's been useless - the browser search-within-page feature just doesn't work anymore. Feels like a time to switch.

friends: are there any downsides to turning on the "Content cache retention period"? I've noticed that my database's content cache table is very large, and I realized I hadn't set a retention time for it.

@ivory I noticed that Ivory's search can't find posts from Misskey instances by URL. The search page on my instance's web interface is able to pull them up.

Finding out that Windows uses the same powershell function to check for the existence of either a) files on disk or b) paths within the Windows registry is breaking my brain. They're not... the same thing?? Right???

I'm still broke, though I've got a temp job for now: they've not yet paid me, however, and I've had to pay something like 4k$ for two medications, and another 2k$ that was supposedly going to make the 4k$ free.

So any donations would be great. https://ko-fi.com/fooneturing
