Woah.

As a UCLA student I was brought in for a test screening of Alien 3 (they got students all the time), which I thought was terrible, and I haven't watched the sequels since.

This I may watch.

(LOL, I'm a Coke Zero person anyway, it's just fascinating.)

@BlackAzizAnansi If it's painted, it's usually easy to repaint.

I'd go for it.

The Washington Post is about to lurch sharply to the right politically as former Murdoch apparatchik solidifies his grip on the organization. Current editor Buzbee is out, and he's bringing in people from Murdoch's Wall Street Journal and the Telegraph (right-wing UK news org).

@dangillmor Going on the website to cancel a yearly subscription could get you an offer to refund $70 of the $120 cost.

You can then use that for another source of journalism (I spent it on the Guardian.)

Thanks to @lauren pointing it out, I'm enjoying "The Andromeda Strain" again, (free on YouTube with ads). It's one of those peak 70s sci-fi films; everyone should watch. Very 70s, but also very hard sci-fi, both in the best ways.

And once you're done watching read: https://theasc.com/articles/the-andromeda-strain-may-1971 which is a great article about all the special care taken to make the movie.

virtualbri,
@virtualbri@mastodon.online avatar

@andrewortwein @lauren Yeah, a few good split screen uses, especially in a montage which represents what the characters were thinking as they went to sleep which I thought was a really interesting way to handle internal dialog without voiceover or flashbacks.

It's a really good way to do it.

Anyone who claims the Republican Party today is good because Lincoln was a Republican 164 years ago is not a serious person.

This is a new one. “Atlas" (2024) promotional material.

This is a new one. The same greenscreen-draped set, thirteen seconds later becomes a grayscreen-draped set.

I once had the perfect sunscreen. It was by Vichy. I have sensitive skin and it actually improved my skin when I wore it. Another bonus was that if there were mosquitos around, they didn't bother me. It wasn't a scent noticeable to human noses, but whatever it was, that sunscreen was an amazing product. Then one day, I went to restock and they had changed the formula! "New and improved" was new, but not improved. All those benefits? Gone, just regular sunscreen.

virtualbri,

@CStamp So "new and improved" probably means "using cheaper ingredients"

"But there was something both more particular and general that we heard yesterday from Trump and even more from all the elected officials and MAGA influencers who rushed to his defense: that the entire criminal justice system is a joke."

It's only working when it's working on someone else....

Just some more good coverage on Trump versus entire concept of the rule of law.

@virtualbri you guys killed it with the VFX on Discovery this season. Not only was it so good, but there was so much of it that it must have been a ton of work. Thanks!

virtualbri, to streaming

I think getting to the credits should count as a full watch of a film on streaming services, so I don't have a giant list of "continue watching" that's almost all foreign film credits.

The amount of Republicans rushing to Trump's side after his conviction is really an example of how the GOP is a cult now, and he's their Dear Leader.

When even guys like McConnell are falling in line you can see how powerful a cult it is.

virtualbri,
@virtualbri@mastodon.online avatar

@overstrike I dunno, he's awful old GOP, which has the same goals, but is quiet about the racism and xenophobia, and Trump is awful new GOP, where all the quiet parts are said aloud.

And he's getting out for cushy life after government so he doesn't even need Trump. He'll have like Koch Brother level support for the rest of his days.

Yet....

virtualbri,
@virtualbri@mastodon.online avatar

@CStamp It's baffling to me. Not that he's anything but evil, but he's a different evil, who could fool a lot of people by being against Trump and slide into rich retirement. But he can't even manage that.

virtualbri,
@virtualbri@mastodon.online avatar

@overstrike Yeah, I guess that's the reason. But all he's gotta do is be quiet and keep collecting his bribe monies.
