Josh Marshall reports that no clear information has yet been reported on who the pro-Israel counter-protesters violently attacking student protesters at UCLA are. He's also seen no evidence they were arrested.

Reports uniformly say they were not students and were almost all men. They were wearing balaklavas.

He concludes,

"This was a pretty big deal. So I’m curious that we still don’t seem to know the actual identities of these people and that – at least as far as I can tell – there have yet to be any arrests. If you’ve seen news reports that shed light on this can you send them in?"

"I feel compelled to point out that the masked goons at UCLA and the riot police on dozens of other campuses are all on the same side of the issue. In the elite political press, that is apparently considered to be the way things should be."

"For years, media coverage of Donald Trump’s fascist tendencies has typically focused on one question: Is he?

Yes, he is. We know this. He tells us as much every day, with both words and actions.

And so it is time — long past time, really — for media coverage to turn to a new central question:"

"Trump is campaigning the way fascists campaign, so how do fascists govern? What is life like in fascist regimes? Not just the broad strokes or big principles — everyday life. ...

What does life look like in Putin’s Russia, in Orban’s Hungary? In nations that have been controlled by autocratic regimes in the past? That's a Trump-assault-on-democracy story that remains largely untold: How will it affect people? It’s a good and important story."

wdlindsy,

"It’s deeply weird how absent that story is from the national conversation about the Trump/GOP assault on American democracy — both media coverage of it and political responses to it."

This story is absent from corporate media because, I'd submit, at this critical moment, large sectors of media and especially the owning and managerial sectors have shown us repeatedly that they'd be perfectly happy with fascism. They assume it will not affect them, onlly hapless underlings.

"While it may come as a surprise to many, most religious groups today favor the legality of abortion. In fact, there are only four (out of 16) religious groups in which a majority say abortion should be illegal in all or most cases: white evangelical Protestants, Hispanic Protestants, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and Latter-Day Saints. Even combined, these four outlier groups only constitute one in five Americans."

"The truth is that we are not polarized on this issue of abortion—at least not if polarization is construed to mean an evenly divided country. Rather, what we have is a vocal and powerful minority attempting to enshrine their beliefs into law, over the objections of nearly twice as many Americans who disagree with them."

Robert Reich reports that he's been meeting with students and faculty to understand the protests. He's concluded:

"While protest movements are often ignited by many different things, and attract an assortment of people with a range of motives, this one is centered on one thing: moral outrage at the slaughter of tens of thousands of innocent people — most of them women and children — in Gaza."

"To interpret these protests as anything else — as antisemitic or anti-Zionist or anti-American or pro-Palestinian — is to miss the essence of what’s going on and why.

Most of the students and faculty I’ve spoken with found Hamas’s attack on October 7 odious. They also find Israel’s current government morally bankrupt, in that its response to Hamas’s attack has been disproportionate."

Heather Cox Richardson reminds us today of where the roots of today's turbulent student protests lie:

"The roots of today’s protests lie in an investigation by the Republican-dominated House Committee on Education and the Workforce, chaired by Virginia Foxx (R-NC)."

Republicans have worked hard to manipulate university administrators into taking unpalatable and hostile positions towards students.

Kaitlan Collins asks bash-the-protesters Sen. J.D. Vance,

"So you agree that people who break in and vandalize the building should be prosecuted?”

Vance replies, “Exactly.”

Collins then says,

"I’m just checking because you did help raise money for people who did so on January 6, which was impeding an official proceeding, breaking into a building that they weren’t allowed to be in and vandalizing the Capitol."

Today, PRRI is releasing results of a new survey about attitudes of Americans towards the legality of abortion. Key findings:

  1. More than 6 in 10 Americans (64%) say abortion should be legal in most or all cases.

  2. More than 8 in 10 Democrats say abortion should be legal in most or all cases compared with about one-third of Republicans.

For conservatives like Charles Sykes, parallels between 1968 student protests and ones today loom ominously large. What remains constant generation to generation is the fixation of the conservative mind on rebellion, protest, as a threat — chaos is the word that often springs to conservative lips. Let idealistic young people get out of hand, let them raise their voices and hark what discord follows: mere anarchy is loosed on the land.

@FrankFrank The equivalence is that young citizens are exercising their power of free speech to address and act about issues that seem to them of utmost importance. In both cases, many US adults reacted to these exercises of free speech violently, spreading lies about what the student protest movements were about — showing that in the US, there's a strong authoritarian reflex reaction against free speech, especially when it comes from young people.

/1

wdlindsy,
@wdlindsy@toad.social avatar

@FrankFrank The lies being spread by certain authoritarian groups of Americans today about the protests — that they're fueled by antisemitism, that they're expressions of Islamic death-to-America ideology — are no different in kind from the lies spread by similar groups in 1968 about the student protests then. Some of us just can't and won't get over our ugly authoritarianism and reflex reaction to repress (and lie about) student protest movements.

wdlindsy,
@wdlindsy@toad.social avatar

@FrankFrank I've seen no evidence that "these Colligiate Pro-Hamas/Palestinian activists" are advocating for this. I've seen no evidence that this represents the vast bulk of student protesters.

This is disinformation. It seeks to tar with a broad brush a large group of people who want to draw attention to Israel's repression and, yes, slaughter of Palestinians.

For many of us, no attempt to use disinformation to draw our attention away from that will succeed. Wasted use of time and energy.
