Hey, Fedi admins, go right now and check to make sure that you have caps/limits set on your Object Storage provider so they just stop serving you images instead of charging you $3,000 because some random person in Europe decided to scrape your instance.

This is a really tragic tale (I hope they can get the charge reversed) but right at this moment I want to make sure this doesn't happen to anyone else.

One real problem we have in our industry is managers who came up through organisations with utter shite management, who then think that they get to take pride and deserve praise for every slightest positive deviation from utter shite management.

So, who's had a manager who evidently came up in an org with good management, and what are those orgs? Sound off below.

(And resist the urge to commiserate in the replies. Let's keep them positive. If we can. Boosts OK.)

And in "no shit, Sherlock" news: "Contrary to the belief that RTO boosts company value, the analysis revealed that RTO mandates are more likely in firms with poor recent stock performance and have had no significant impacts on firm profitability or stock-returns. Moreover, a notable drop in employee job satisfaction was observed, further questioning the efficacy of these mandates."

Week 3 of hundreds of thousands of people in taking to the streets to protest against fascism and far-right movements. Peacefully. Leaderless. Because being antifascist is a hard requirement for democracy. We have learned from history.

For those of you who regularly give talks using a slide deck: while delivering your talk to the audience, do you use a timer?

A — Yes, one that ticks down the total amount of time allotted for the talk.
B — Yes, one that also ticks down the time budgeted for each slide.
C — No, I rely on the organizers of the event to flash me "remaining time" signs.

(Boosts appreciated.)

It makes me happy that not only does Melbourne Central shopping centre put a great sounding piano in their food court, they don’t lock it when the centres stores are almost all closed. It’s a delight to wander through the nearly empty centre early morning or late at night and come across groups of young people gathered around the piano making music. People seem to respect the piano. It’s been there for ages and I’ve never noticed it be damaged or dirty
