If there's one thing I've learned in 20 years in this industry, it's this:

If you think the global change you're about to make will simplify things, you haven't thought it through enough.

This is accurate sufficiently often that to assume the opposite is hubris.

Dear ⁠istas, in the spirit of "it's always ", are you aware of something that might break this?

On an /v6 dual-stack client, you make a requests.Session.get() call. The target host name is a CNAME record that points to several round-robin A records but no AAAA records. The endpoints all listen on IPv4 only.

Have you come across any situation in which requests may be misbehaving in such a way that -to-v4 fallback doesn't work, and the call would result in a ConnectionError?

@fink Well, no. If there's no AAAA record then a client which speaks both IPv4 and IPv6, and connects to the HTTP service using a hostname, should only use IPv4 to connect.

But I am surmising that something might get tripped up if the hostname is a CNAME which does resolve, but where the thing that the CNAME points to has only A and no AAAA records.

Whether that "something" is requests, or name resolution in Python, or even the OS network stack — that I wouldn't know, though.

@antondollmaier That's the way I understand it too, I am just unsure if this specific CNAME scenario might somehow make that fail.

Beim ÖBB BUSINESS-Konto (!) gibt es seit Anfang dieses Jahres keine automatische Vorsteuerbescheinigung mehr. Wenn du eine USt-Rechnung haben willst, mit der deine Buchhaltung was anfangen kann, dann kannst du die per Email anfragen und die Bearbeitung dauert etwa eine Woche.

Du kannst natürlich auch deiner Buchhaltung dein PDF-Ticket als Beleg geben, auf dem ist die USt ausgewiesen. Bedeutet halt den Verzicht auf jegliche Stornomöglichkeit.

@crisl_at Was ich daran überhaupt nicht raffe: als es die Business Card noch gab (Vorläufer des Business-Kontos, gefühlt 10 Jahre her), hat meine Firma einfach einmal im Monat eine Abrechnung über alle in dem Monat gemachten Buchungen bekommen. Mit ausgewiesener USt. Warum das heute so kaputt ist, ist mir absolut schleierhaft.

@crisl_at Ich hatte eine Buchung im Dezember, da kam (in separater E-Mail, aber gleichzeitig) zur Buchung automatisch die Vorsteuerbescheinigung mit.

Nächste Buchung im März, nix. Nächste Anfang Juni, nix.

Letzte Woche Anruf bei der Kundenhotline, große Perplexität beim Mitarbeiter warum keine USt-Rechnung. Heute nochmal Anruf, andere Mitarbeiterin — "ja das ist seit Jahresbeginn so."

@eliasp Ich meinte eigentlich nur, dass man bei uns das Thema "Energiesparen bei Kälte" verinnerlicht hat, aber mangels verbreiteter Klimaanlagen-Erfahrung eben das Thema "Energiesparen bei Hitze" eher weniger.
