So, USians take note. The German far right sued the government because the German equivalent of the FBI monitored it for anticonstitutional activities.

My kids' basketball coach periodically reminds parents that they (the parents) are in the stands to cheer on the whole team, not to shout unqualified and confusing instructions to individual players. And also that the players are under 10, so spectators are advised to chill.

She's brilliant.

The sprung wooden clothes peg is an amazing feat of engineering: a solid improvement over its predecessor (the dolly peg), extremely practical, industrial mass production capable, sustainable, biodegradable, UV-stable, with a useful life measured in decades.

Almost all those advantages go out the window if we make the damn things out of plastic.

A proper contextual translation of the German inscription on this church would be "come to me, ye who suffer chore and burden." But the verbatim translation — "come to me, ye who are tedious and loaded" — is much funnier.

A new work colleague said the phrase "forming, zorming or whatever," and it was an instant connection. 😂

The model of "forming, storming, norming" has has never described my experience of teams. Like, at all.

@elizayer Okay. For me it's always been:

  • New person joins my team (meaning: we have a new team)
  • Person gets up to speed on how we do things, integrates well and is welcomed (forming)
  • Person discovers something they think is not great and needs changing; there is some friction as a result (storming)
  • We discuss and either update our ways, or the new person realises the way we've been doing it is okay afterall (norming)
  • Either way, we move on as a better team (performing)

@elizayer I tend to not think of it as "conflict" either (and I'd have to go back to the original Tuckman to see if he ever emphasised that specific term), but rather as constructive friction.

@elizayer Okay yeah, that implies that people are at each other's throats. That I haven't seen either.

Though if I ever would, I don't think I'd sit it out. Rather, I reckon it'd be a them or me situation where one would have to go.

@elizayer Possibly, though I know of at least one concept (Integrated Model of Group Development, IMGD) due to Susan Wheelan that is much more recent (1996) and is essentially a Tuckman second pour-over.

@jojo_en_riant Ich würde mal sagen da gibt's keine Antwort, solang man den öknomischen/sozialen Kontext außer acht lässt. In den letzten 200 Jahren hat sich unglaublich viel verändert; ca. 1824 war eine feste Beziehung noch vordergründig eine weitestgehende alternativlose wirtschaftliche Zweck- und Zwangsgemeinschaft. Andererseits war auch eine monogame Beziehung bis zum Tod selten eine Sache von mehreren Jahrzehnten, weil die Menschen wie die Fliegen gestorben sind.

I just looked at XML that embedded some Markdown in an attribute. Which included HTML entities to encode < and >, and the &#10; character entity to encode newlines, in that attributized Markdown.

Halp - Grammarly's free 'business' accounts for nonprofits just expired, and i didn't realize it would mean all my "Snippets" (a bank of frequently used formatted text accessible via shortcut) would no longer work (and also be deleted 😭 )

Any alternatives out there to Snippets anyone can share?

Having to cut and paste identical answers to a bajillion PyCon sponsors a week out from the event is cracking my already strained sanity 😭

@lorenipsum I cannot work without it. It's exceedingly useful. I use it for little things like turning "b/c" into "because" and "w/o" into "without", but also for spelling "hth" out as "Please let me know if that information is helpful. Thank you!"

@hikhvar This, and also: even if all your unit and integrations keep passing throughout the rewrite, all that effort is for naught if the rewrite just does not make sense.
