    As a public service announcement, please be aware that there are many things that I'm profoundly clueless about. These include:

    • fashion
    • cars
    • most TV (Netflix, Disney+ etc.) series
    • football (and most other competitive sports)
    • proprietary software stacks

    If you ask me about those, and I say I can't help you, it's not because I want you to go away. It's also not because I'm somehow proud of my ignorance. It's because I have nothing to contribute, and I refuse to pretend the contrary.

    Serious question: why is it that so many people apparently have real problems adopting ISO 8601 dates and UTC, in a professional context?

    As in, are those somehow fundamentally incompatible with human nature? Or do people just completely lack the cultural awareness to understand that some of their colleagues are used to a different date format than they are, or live in a different timezone, or don't use daylight saving time?

    @binford2k Well hang on, I think you're conflating two things here.

    (1) Does a meeting chair have the basic decency and respect to check whether all invitees to a meeting can attend at what to them is a reasonably convenient local time.

    (2) Does someone use a universal format in written communications, not limited to meeting invites.

    I'm talking about item (2) here.

    @binford2k For example, why would someone use their local timezone for the timeline in a post-mortem report read by people who work in multiple timezones. A post-mortem report that may well contain server log snippets. Whose timestamps are in Etc/UTC.

    It boggles the mind, but it's surprisingly common. And I'd like to know why.

    Hmm interesting, Tusky (Nightly) appears to be posting my toots but refusing to show them to me in my own timeline, while it apparently shows me everyone else's timelines just fine? That's an odd one.

    In Österreich schreibt man im Vorfeld der Matura (in Deutschland: Abitur) eine "vorwissenschaftliche Arbeit" oder VWA. Die wird einem Plagiatsscan unterzogen. Der taugt jetzt nicht mehr, weil er ChatGPT-erschwurbelte Arbeiten nicht als Plagiat "erkennen" kann. Die Lehrergewerkschaft will daher jetzt die VWA abschaffen; 81% der in einer Umfrage befragten Lehrkräfte sind dafür.

    Man wird der Fazialpalmierungen langsam müde.

    @deboraha I have done that too, though I do feel like I'm being a bit maliciously compliant when I do. Some conferences also insist on uploading something (as in, you have to upload a file, rather than provide a link, though they tend not to care much about the file type); this I deal with by uploading a slides.html consisting of <html><head><meta http-equiv="refresh" content="0;url=link/to/slides"/></head><body/></html>.

    Smart Meter, die neuen Strommessgeräte, sind bis Ende 2022 deutlich langsamer als versprochen installiert worden. Außerdem kostete die Einführung gut doppelt so viel wie geplant, und der Zugriff auf die Daten gelang den Anbietern nur teilweise. Damit wurde die versprochene „Intelligenz“ nicht erreicht, schreibt der Rechnungshof (RH) in einem heute veröffentlichten Bericht.

    Mal in die -Runde gefragt: was verwendet ihr denn so für Bratpfannen? Ich bin in den letzten Jahren von Teflon abgekommen und bevorzuge eher Keramik-Antihaft (meist von WMF). Ich hab auch gusseiserne Pfannen, die ich regelmäßig mit Leinöl einbrenne, aber für den tagtäglichen Gebrauch ist eine mit Antihaftbeschichtung einfach bequemer.

    Aber ich lass mich gern auch von anderen Standpunkten überzeugen. Retröts und Kommentare gerne erbeten.

    Falls es jemanden interessiert, es ist dann bei mir wieder diese hier geworden.

    Wenn ich in 5 Jahren berichten kann, dass sie noch treue Dienste leistet, dann war es ein guter Kauf.
