Perfect jacket potatoes:

Use 4 large potatoes.
Rub dirt off under running water.
Do not peel, but do stab each potato 4-5 times with a fork.
Pop in pre-heated oven, 230°C.
Melt 100g butter on low heat.
Add 2 teaspoons salt to molten butter, mix thoroughly.
Take potatoes out of oven after 20 minutes, chuck in bowl, pour butter-salt mix over, toss vigorously to cover spuds from all sides.
Return to oven at 120°C.
Cook for 60 minutes.

Scale up for larger amount as needed.

(Haven't tried, but using vegan butter instead of dairy butter should work just fine. Olive oil should also work, but obviously gives a different flavour.)

I was sitting there with my mouth open after watching this Apple ad, and I can't remember something like that ever physically happening to me before. Just slow, building horror.

WTF, CC?

You honestly argue that the content I put out under the International version of CC-BY-SA can be snarfed up by an LLM because of the "fair use" doctrine that's specifically USian, rendering the licence conditions moot?

https://creativecommons.org/2023/02/17/fair-use-training-generative-ai/

xahteiwi,
@xahteiwi@mastodon.social avatar

@hamatti To be fair this is from February of last year — per Hanlon's razor, maybe the author was just being terribly naïve. But you'd think people posting about copyright/licensing on the CC web site would know their stuff.

xahteiwi,
@xahteiwi@mastodon.social avatar

@carlton @webology Even if we buy into the idea that the license conditions do not apply, like that CC article argues, then I must still observe that my copyright law dgaff about U.S. fair use. My copyright law has Zitierfreiheit (freedom to quote), which requires ... guess what ... attribution. Pretty damn precise attribution, no less.

It's shocking how much you can surprise people by saying "I don't know", rather than conjuring up a bullshit answer.

xahteiwi,
@xahteiwi@mastodon.social avatar

@craige I don't, because I can't reasonably make that promise in every instance. It's sometimes more like "I have absolutely no idea about this, and gaining significant insight into the matter to develop an informed opinion to give you a meaningful answer would require about two weeks of research. If you want me to spend that much time on it I'll be more than happy to, but you'll need to tell me which of these other things you want to take off my plate instead."

    As a public service announcement, please be aware that there are many things that I'm profoundly clueless about. These include:

    • fashion
    • cars
    • most TV (Netflix, Disney+ etc.) series
    • football (and most other competitive sports)
    • proprietary software stacks

    If you ask me about those, and I say I can't help you, it's not because I want you to go away. It's also not because I'm somehow proud of my ignorance. It's because I have nothing to contribute, and I refuse to pretend the contrary.

    Serious question: why is it that so many people apparently have real problems adopting ISO 8601 dates and UTC, in a professional context?

    As in, are those somehow fundamentally incompatible with human nature? Or do people just completely lack the cultural awareness to understand that some of their colleagues are used to a different date format than they are, or live in a different timezone, or don't use daylight saving time?

    @binford2k Well hang on, I think you're conflating two things here.

    (1) Does a meeting chair have the basic decency and respect to check whether all invitees to a meeting can attend at what to them is a reasonably convenient local time.

    (2) Does someone use a universal format in written communications, not limited to meeting invites.

    I'm talking about item (2) here.

    xahteiwi,
    @xahteiwi@mastodon.social avatar

    @binford2k For example, why would someone use their local timezone for the timeline in a post-mortem report read by people who work in multiple timezones. A post-mortem report that may well contain server log snippets. Whose timestamps are in Etc/UTC.

    It boggles the mind, but it's surprisingly common. And I'd like to know why.

    xahteiwi,
    @xahteiwi@mastodon.social avatar

    @attacus THANK YOU for letting me know how I can get Thunderbird to display ISO 8601 dates!

    I will now enjoy the Help→Aboot menu item, and every error message starting with "I'm sorry." Also I will make sure to always hold the door open for my Thunderbird.

    Seriously, thanks for that workaround. It'll be immensely useful.

    xahteiwi,
    @xahteiwi@mastodon.social avatar

    @rhoot "If everyone involved is in the same TZ" ... you forgot to add "and always will be". Are you absolutely certain you'll never have a colleague working from Ireland, Greece, or Estonia? As soon as you do, coordinating in UTC is the superior option.

    @mattcen

    xahteiwi,
    @xahteiwi@mastodon.social avatar

    @creepy_owlet @rhoot @mattcen

    As I explain in the article, the point is not to find the easiest solution for most people, because that always ends up marginalising that ones who are not "most". The point is to create an environment where everyone is on the same footing.

    xahteiwi,
    @xahteiwi@mastodon.social avatar

    @creepy_owlet @rhoot @mattcen

    And, coordinating in UTC is definitely the better option as soon as you have a person on the team with a different DST schedule. Examples for a company from western Europe: people from the southern hemisphere, people from north America, people from India.

    Mal in die -Runde gefragt: was verwendet ihr denn so für Bratpfannen? Ich bin in den letzten Jahren von Teflon abgekommen und bevorzuge eher Keramik-Antihaft (meist von WMF). Ich hab auch gusseiserne Pfannen, die ich regelmäßig mit Leinöl einbrenne, aber für den tagtäglichen Gebrauch ist eine mit Antihaftbeschichtung einfach bequemer.

    Aber ich lass mich gern auch von anderen Standpunkten überzeugen. Retröts und Kommentare gerne erbeten.
