So, here's a fun fact: have you ever wondered how exactly U.S. president Franklin D. Roosevelt convinced Americans that Hitler was bad, considering he ran a country that was itself deeply racist and heavily antisemitic, had a sizeable fascist movement, and used much similar economic policies as Germany in the late stages of the Great Depression?

He framed it as supporting religious freedom, which the Nazis were encroaching on.

I didn't know that, until I read this bio.

One thing that this book barely mentions, curiously, is the Bitter Lake Agreement (also known as the Quincy Agreement), arguably one of the most influential things that the U.S. did in the 20th century. It shapes the Middle East to this day.

Here, he wasn't so hung up on religious freedom. So y'all want to force Wahhabism on a whole country? That's cool, as long as we can have your oil.

"maybe we need this in the future" is a bad idea for writing good code. If we need that flexibility in the future, other things will have changed as well. Better do it then, not complicating matters now.

Folks, please answer this question as if I were a complete #hardware nitwit, because I really am.

My trusted Razer Kiyo USB #webcam appears to be in its death throes. It looks like it's getting detected just fine, and I can use it for about two seconds, at which point it freezes and appears to upset all my USB devices (?), and becomes unusable. It does this on two different machines, so I think it is the camera, as opposed to a local USB problem.

Where do I start #troubleshooting this?

Something I learned in Florence the other week: the city having been inundated repeatedly by floods of the river Arno over the centuries, the November 1966 flood was particularly bad for the following reasons:

  1. It was the highest since 1557.
  2. It was the first major flood that occurred after industrialisation and the widespread introduction of fossil fuels. A massive hindrance to cleanup were the petroleum oil slicks that the water carried everywhere.

Okay, so this is weird: depending on whether you use a desktop browser or a mobile device, the link below takes you to different slides in the deck.

What sense does that make? I mean, reveal.js generally makes wise choices about UX, but I really can't fathom by which considerations this would be a good idea.
