Listening recommendation for the morning:

There are a lot of companies and ideas competing for space on the post-Twitter internet, and Jay makes a convincing argument that decentralization — the idea that you should be able to take your username and following to different servers as you wish — is the future. It’s a powerful concept that’s been kicking around for a long time, but now it feels closer to reality than ever before. You’ve heard us talk about it a lot on Decoder: the core idea is that no single company — or individual billionaire — can amass too much power and control over our social networks and the conversations that happen on them.

There are quite some reasons that leave me very cautious about Bluesky, one being for sure the fact there's one commercial entity currently backing this service / protocol, especially one that has risen from the same ecosystem that caused a lot of the trouble we do experience with current social media platforms. But, I've then and now been at odds with ActivityPub as a protocol, which gets worse the more I dig into it, and from that perspective, it seems the AT crowd gets a lot of things right, considered a lot of things that don't just seem obvious at least in the 2010s but actually surprising to see them missing from ActivityPub, a spec that has been established at roughly the same time: Full account portability (the idea of comparing personal data, conversations, comments, posts, ... to a github repository which "of course" you want to easily be able to take, backup, move around, ... seems both stunning and painfully trivial), support of custom domains for users (which Tumblr has already been supporting for years now), distributed curation and moderation (because most obviously community structures will be different to server or domain structures and not necessarily live on one instance exclusively) - in a way I really do hope they "show don't tell" by submitting that protocol to some standardization body anytime soon. Maybe this, too, could provide a good option for the "open" fediverse to counter the problems that might arise the very moment platforms like Meta / Threads fully embrace ActivityPub. (I also found it rather interesting to listen to what she had to say about why Meta might be more into ActivityPub than AT - being "server-centric" rather than "user-centric" - but that might just be a loose end of things.)

One of my currently biggest "issues" with Friendica is handling re-sharing posts right. Like: If I use just "native reshare" on the post, behaviour differs according to where a post comes from. Meaning: Resharing Pixelfed or Mastodon posts will only make them visible to the AP crowd. Resharing Diaspora* posts will only make them visible for Diaspora* folks. Same for Tumblr and cough Bluesky. So I usually do use quote-sharing for content that matters (to me), which however results in being unable to use random Mastodon API clients (like , , ) for that - as in there, I can only (by now) boost Mastodon posts as far as it seems and I am unable to at least easily do a quote-share of an existing boost. Unfortunately, even though I really do force myself to use Friendica web / Frio all the time, it still leaves some things to be desired especially on mobile devices.
So, wondering: How do you folks handle this? Just use Friendica web and go with its "issues"? Just use whatever "reshare"/"boost" does without not bothering too much about who's able to see the posts? Or not interacting with any people outside the ActivityPub universe at all....?

z428,

Yeah, I mostly do that too, but I'm online on "mobile" much more for one, and the other side: I'd like very much to be able to share "non-AP" stuff with the ActivityPub crowd for obvious reasons, especially talking Diaspora*. 🙂

z428,

Yes, one common strictly implemented protocol would be way better (and in some ways I think Diaspora* actually does have quite that, unlike AP which seems to leave too many interesting aspects unaddressed...)

z428,

@vegos_f06 Oh well, I don't really like Mastodon bashing all too much, but asides the greater reach, I feel the more disappointed with ActivityPub the deeper I look into the specs and the things left open or unaddressed for reasons beyond my understanding. User consistency is definitely one of them.

Bitcoin and their ilk really aren't my thing, but many talk about the need for a digital currency. But here's the thing - we already have one, don't we?
https://kevquirk.com/we-already-have-a-digital-currency

z428,

@rysiek Exactly. Yes. And I'd really love to see a solution to that problem that doesn't come with the drawbacks the current cryptocurrencies use to introduce.

@Charlie Indeed. A person chilling, or a tired Addams Family member...🙈

Not sure I asked this before: What approach do Friendica folks use for posting smaller video clips? Would like to cut depending on pixelfed just for that...

z428,

@heluecht Ah ok. This is for .06 release? Will that work via tusky / Mastodon API too?

@helpers @anubis2814

z428,

@heluecht Ok, I see. Thanks. So I'll give it a try as soon as we're on the RC.

#followerpower Anyone has any issues with #osmand on Android these days? Usually, after a few seconds, the app will almost completely lock up my device, eventually resulting in system UI restarting. Didn't see this before so far...

Moin zusammen,

There's a massive elephant in the room when it comes to . How do you recruit folks to help with building?

Just why is your community pipeline limited? Could it per chance be your public behaviour as the BDFL?

I mean you realise your community is more than just the code right?

@onepict Oh yes. Another's of these elephants... FLOSS sustainability still leaves a lot to be improved... 🙁

I recently discovered Grip, Inc and my current hyperfocus is their track Hostage to Heaven off their first album. It is ridiculously good. (Heads up, heavy and fast music).

This example is just guitar and drums, but that’s all it really needs imo.

z428,

@janl Uh. Neat stuff. Loved their first two or three albums back then but somehow lost track of their doings. Wasn't even aware they're still around...🙈
