I'm increasingly thinking that if I get a job, it needs to be part time, or have a flexible schedule.

One of the people at the job coaching space (who also has by the way) used to work as an electrician. Practical outdoorsy type. He said he couldn't function as an electrician anymore because the amount of paperwork has become overwhelming.

The government has added so much red tape that it's costing some people their jobs.

It was perfect for him. Moving around and fixing things. Talking to people a little. Flexible schedule.

Ruined by bureaucrats.

@mxtthxw We've become more risk-averse than before. Safety culture. And this excludes a group of people who used to be productive. There is much talk of workplace diversity and this is the opposite of that.

He mentioned an example where he has to fill out paperwork to install two electrical outlets in a normal home.

The stuff above is only confirming to me that we've created a world with such rigid and inflexible demands that it has created new disorders.

"We're sorry you've got , but you need to be good at reading to survive in today's world."

"We're sorry you've got , but you need to sit still and pay attention to survive in today's world."

A medieval peasant wouldn't even know it if he had these disorders.

    romikk,

@thor the world became ever more complex in the last 50 years (let alone 500). Above is just e reflection of that fact, unfortunately. Living a peaceful and secure life like it was for our grandparents is now a luxury.

@romikk All this security and comfort comes at the cost of ever increasing complexity. For some of us, the limit of how much complexity we can handle has been crossed, and we end up as dysfunctional outsiders.

@romikk On paper, I probably have enough issues to qualify for disability benefits. But I also hate being alone and not being of service to other people.

@romikk I think that most people on disability benefits do actually want to participate in society, but all these bullshit requirements... 🙄

@thor My kid is severely, profoundly dyslexic. It is far far worse than most realize.

The rate of learning disabilities in jail and prison is astronomical. A Texas jail measured the rate of learning disabilities (mostly dyslexia) at 80% of the jail population, when it is naturally less than 1 in 5.

Current testing methods for dyslexia only captures severe cases, or cases where there is an easy, measurable gap between spoken intelligence and reading. If you moderately struggle with reading due to dyslexia but aren't naturally brilliant in some other way, testing simply doesn't catch it.

It can be corrected with teaching that is more like physical therapy for the brain. Instead we go cheap on education, focusing on the kids that are easy to teach, then spend the money on prisons because dyslexics are excluded from jobs due to poor reading skills.

We basically jail dyslexics if they aren't from rich families able to pay for a dyslexia education.

@sewblue I'm very good at reading, but christ, a person who is bad at that is NOT useless. We just rigged the system against that.
