    @elaterite The story of my bird photography life

    canusfeminacanis,

    @Rasta
    Today, this is yours 🏆.

    Haven't laughed like this in a long time. Thanks.

    So, how's life on the
    'sea-bounded coast'?

    Rasta,
    @Rasta@mstdn.ca avatar

    @canusfeminacanis snowing, it's the highlight of my day

    canusfeminacanis,

    @Rasta

    That's either wonderful or disturbing...

    You and yours doing well?

    Rasta,
    @Rasta@mstdn.ca avatar

    @canusfeminacanis it's got to be shoveled eventually, when you are up to your knees and lifting each shovel full to move. I prefer to combine it with a walk and an audiobook, scraping the driveway in circles while it snows.
    I've heard some good books. I'm wide awake, but it's early to be outside when you're the only one awake.

    canusfeminacanis,

    @Rasta

    Which books have you been listening to?

    Rasta,
    @Rasta@mstdn.ca avatar

    @canusfeminacanis I have a huge list. I don't listen ONLINE for many reasons (bandwidth, range, adverts) but I pick a book I find, download it to my phone and last year, I got into bluetooth headphones and did more books in one year, than in my entire life before that. 100 books (plus or minus 5) , January, I did 13, I think. Just finished a long one, American Prometheus - Kai Bird, Martin J Sherwin , Oppenheimer story. Really good. My list, thus far. My phone reader keeps a list too

    canusfeminacanis,

    @Rasta

    What did you think of Henry Sugar?

    I have a lot of re-reading to do . Most I've read ages ago, barring Schopenhauer. Sun Tsu, more recently. If only everyone thought his way about war!

    Rasta,
    @Rasta@mstdn.ca avatar

    @canusfeminacanis I did a lot of the Japan disciplines and Sun Tzu and other names I can't spell. I liked Henry Sugar. Not nearly as long as others, but good. Also the boxcar kids.. and that Educated one.. that was a true story of horror also.

    Rasta,
    @Rasta@mstdn.ca avatar

    @canusfeminacanis
    I never read books. I excelled at manuals. I can locate and reference text I've only read once. But I can't get to page two in a novel. All required reading books in school (or suggested) Of Mice And Men, Catcher in the Rye, The great gatsby, The Pearl, I've done them all just in 2023. History is captivating me and philosophy .. then I throw in a novel to keep me on a well-balanced direction

    canusfeminacanis,

    @Rasta

    History is fascinating. While it's true that the unexamined life is not worth living, philosophy can get a bit ... heavy going after a while. Impressed at your list so far.

    Put Pratchett on your list. He was prolific and compassionate and logical and deeply funny. Usually lighter than Dahl, though certainly of a similar bent.

    Rasta,
    @Rasta@mstdn.ca avatar

    @canusfeminacanis
    I have all the links, I think, for these books. Most are Libravox available too, but from YouTube, I can just click and download 3-4 books a day and put them away to add to my phone. My Smartbook reader keeps track but I deleted the read ones and it had a marker in the folder, so I forgot some titles after that.
    The Nicomachean Ethics was long and drawn out but a good understanding of our behavior too.

    canusfeminacanis,

    @Rasta

    Pratchett's books are on YT. Stephen Briggs reads them, I think. Small Gods is a good place to start, esp. from the philosophy immersion you've been in.

    Rasta,
    @Rasta@mstdn.ca avatar

    @canusfeminacanis I think I have one of Pratchett's Downloaded. Didn't sound like a topic I'd stay interested in, but there was someone else reading a lot of them, so I wanted to be well rounded. a little bit of everything.
    I'd like to re-listen to Tana French, In The Wood, but I wasn't saving them when I heard that book, and it's not available anywhere now

    canusfeminacanis,

    @Rasta
    Nimochean Ethics has a good understanding of human behaviour, but seems... pessimistic in its prescriptions.

    Rasta,
    @Rasta@mstdn.ca avatar

    @canusfeminacanis The future wasn't looking bright, even back then.

    Rasta,
    @Rasta@mstdn.ca avatar

    @canusfeminacanis
    I really liked Yuval Noah Harari, albeit the reader is AI, but the content, I've enjoyed 4 of his books already

    canusfeminacanis,

    @Rasta

    Harari's good fun. Want to read more of his.

    Rasta,
    @Rasta@mstdn.ca avatar

    @canusfeminacanis All of them are on YT I think. Good thought processes. I like books that make you think, not just stories. I can make up stories in my head, give me non-fiction and brain food. Subjects that I was denied previous, or not available before. Some subjects and speakers are captivating. Less so Immanuel Kant

    canusfeminacanis,

    @Rasta

    Have always held that one must be wary of philosophers whose names are I. Kant.

    Rasta,
    @Rasta@mstdn.ca avatar

    @canusfeminacanis LOL, he's dry. But, the concept. The Critique of Pure Reason.
    We can't even explain common words we use, when someone from another language asks.. but we've never thought about why or when we use them.
    Just really dry and detailed. 36-39 hours.

    canusfeminacanis,

    @Rasta OK, am now on the computer. Much better for lengthy cofabs. Visibility, dontcha know. ;)

    We describe as we perceive. We form our lexicons throughout our lives, based on words that 'fit' us, suit our purposes, fit not just the context into which we put them, but also are the best reflection not only of what we perceive, (or don't) but the state we are in as we perceive them.

    Rasta,
    @Rasta@mstdn.ca avatar

    @canusfeminacanis
    My philosophical thoughts go along the lines, am I doing this, because I want to, or because I am conditioned to? Do I fear bees because one stung me, or because I have learned to wave my hands in the car like everyone else, for no reason?
    WTF is Fashion about? How does that enhance my life? Kim Kardash.... Gesundheit.. Practical and purposeful, I don't follow traditions or imaginary rules. Except, of course Caturday.. cause, that's as real as it gets.

    canusfeminacanis,

    @Rasta

    Caturday means you are civilised. :)

    Fash & the Kardash are holdlovers from the days when new discoveries were shared to enhance the life of the tribe.

    As for the bees, because flapping your hands will not get rid of the bee, and will only serve to agitate the insect and probably you, it's an imitated response that's become habitual through repetition. Easy enough to unlearn by replacing the action with opening a window while moving at speed. :)

    Two things I didn't want to teach my kids.
    Santa Claus
    Fear of Spider

    canusfeminacanis,

    @Rasta

    Santa? A Greek bishop who stumped up for some impoverished gals' dowries. A generous thing to do at the time. Generosity of spirit pretty much defines the point Christmas.

    Fear of spiders? Caution is sometimes a good thing, esp. if said spider is known to be venomous.

    Daddy long legs live free in my house. Other spiders can take their chances with the dll's, as can insects.

    Rasta,
    @Rasta@mstdn.ca avatar

    @canusfeminacanis
    I used to have a garden spider that stayed in a potted tree. Never bothered anyone, kept the mites and gnats down

    canusfeminacanis,

    @Rasta

    Have you resorted to building a quincy yet?

    That snowfall sounds insane..

    Rasta,
    @Rasta@mstdn.ca avatar

    @canusfeminacanis ♪ If I could talk to the animals.. (I'm wondering if I have the video handy?) last month, while I was having coffee, I looked out the window to see a deer looking back. I have fruit trees, that I grew from seed, there can be no deer in the yard.. I took pots and pans and chased it out and it wanted to stay. I wonder where she is in this snow?

    canusfeminacanis,

    @Rasta

    I always feel bad for deer in winter. Snow doesn't improve their menu, and then reduces the availability of even that.

    Rasta,
    @Rasta@mstdn.ca avatar

    @canusfeminacanis Nature is cruel, but in places where they feed them, a dozen car accidents every year, and no one can own a garden, the town is overrun with deer. Then, there's a forced culling, for public safety.. nature does culling with bad years of snow and higher coyote population

    canusfeminacanis,

    @Rasta

    Dry? Understatement. Couldn't endure 39 hours; it took me 12 cover to cover. Appalling lack of the linguistic-perception connection. Huge discussion is merited, but will do that on my computer, not this ruddy phone.

    Rasta,
    @Rasta@mstdn.ca avatar

    @canusfeminacanis I find the readers, who are pronouncing huge words and phrases in several languages, to be doing a great job. But I have to put things in my head. If i can't pronounce it, pretty soon, I'll forget

    I spent a merry hour or so this afternoon respecting my ESO skills - yes it took my ASD brain over an hour to decide the relative importance of 14 fairly trivial things & assign them keys 🙄🤦‍♂️

    Hope you have had a good day & not got too cold - you sorted all them pics out yet ?
