Plant eater, animal lover, reader, socially disassociated currently, photographer, e-bike (now) rider.
I've stopped boosting images that lack alt text. Even ones that I love!
I live in Nova Scotia, with my husband, border collie and three Cornish Rex cats. I seem to spend 90% of my waking time in the kitchen, cooking and the rest out walking my dog.
I do not post or comment on anything political.
I write stories and take pictures. They are on my blog mostly.

AI assistant, draw me what among medical circles is known as a "wallet biopsy"

EllieK,
@EllieK@mstdn.ca avatar

@ChristosArgyrop
Perfect! That's exactly what I would have drawn, with my extensive medical knowledge. (The first, obviously not the second, which is ridiculous. ) You see, not so stupid after all!

@ChristosArgyrop
How silly of me. I guess my medical training was a little lacking? 🤣

In parts of the northern USA and lots of spots in Canada, this time of the year is Maple Sugar season filled with lots of hard work and hoping for ideal weather conditions. If you’d like a terrific short intro to the process along with some fabulous old photos, see @EllieK and @stevenkennard slideshow presentation!

We all send our best wishes for a very happy mondog to Kukla and the whole gang! Joni specially sends a squeak of her blue ball, which is dog code for something they only understand.
Don't forget to watch the make syrup story!

'Tis the season for maple syrup making. For any who are curious about the history and process, I made a slideshow video about the process and you can watch it on Vimeo here:

It's just under 6 minutes watch. My voiceover.

@GertrudeZane
Thank you!
There you go! We learn something every day, I find. Steven is also on a sodium restricted diet, so we were sad to learn that it's best to avoid our beloved raw sauerkraut due to the sodium content.
Have you read the book "How Not to Age " by Dr. Michael Greger? I love this man's well researched books, including How Not To Die. They all come with the source studies cited, which is what I like to see.
His excellent non-profit website is https://nutritionfacts.org

EllieK,
@EllieK@mstdn.ca avatar

@GertrudeZane
You probably can get both books from the library (I did) in audio, ebook or hard copy. I bought the eBooks as there is so much info to check back on.

EllieK,
@EllieK@mstdn.ca avatar

@danmccullough
Thanks Dan.
Some of those old colour photos were taken of my late uncle Alan Norris, in his sugar bush in Quebec and I have such fond memories of him and that time. (They were from an old calendar I have. )
It's had a couple of boosts, so I hope it helps a few more people to learn about it.

EllieK, (edited ) to statistics
@EllieK@mstdn.ca avatar

Can anyone who understands statistics with regards to covid infection rates understand why the rating, which used to be from 1-10 in severity is now calculated at 1-20?

What does that mean when I see a rate 'high' - 5.3/20 in Nova Scotia? Would that have been 10.6/10 before? And therefore severe? Or 2.6/10 which would have only been elevated.
I'm no good at these things!

It's not easy.
I think it does, on one of her original posts (maybe in French) say 1 in 139 infected.

I would, but it's just too late in the day for me. It doesn't start before 9 pm our time. My devices are turned off at 9, so that I can settle down for the evening and actually sleep as I'm such a hyper person. Ha ha.

It's automated and she wouldn't see responses, nor can we see what she's responding to on there (unless you have an x account, which I no longer have), which can be frustrating.

My 2024 maple sugaring season has ended and we got 30 liters of sap. There were 2 additional liters that I tossed because it had soured and big, meaty moths had drowned in it. I harvested 36 liters in 2023.

I tapped the tree 2/1 and took the bucket down on 3/17. The height of the flow was 2/3 to 2/10.

After boiling we ended up with a little over 1.5 pints of syrup. Lots of work for not a lot of syrup which explains why this stuff is so expensive!

Top down view of a metal pot filled with light brown bubbles as it is boiling and slowly becoming syrup.
Top down view of the sap fully boiled down to 219 degrees and now syrup. It is amber-brown and is cooling.
A glass jar showing off the cooled maple syrup. For scale, I have set it next to an empty seltzer container that is 1 liter. Both are sitting on a countertop.

EllieK,
@EllieK@mstdn.ca avatar

@danmccullough
Good for you! We've never tapped ours, thoogh we have plenty.
I bet it tastes even better when you've gone to so much effort.
The best I can offer is a slideshow video I made of the history of maple syrup. I'll share that in a bit.

Here are the Easter messages of the two candidates for President. One is a man of faith, the other is a grifter who disguises himself as an angel of light.

You aren't voting for one 80-year-old man or the other. You're not voting for a particular issue. You're voting for the kind of world you want, selecting the sort of leadership that exemplifies your values, and choosing between the policies of love and democracy or hate and revenge.

Every election. Every race. Every Democrat.

Donald J. Trump post: HAPPY EASTER TO ALL, INCLUDING THOSE THAT DREAM ENDLESSLY OF DESTROYING OUR COUNTRY BECAUSE THEY ARE INCAPABLE OF DREAMING ABOUT ANYTHING ELSE, THOSE THAT ARE SO INCOMPETENT THEY DON'T REALIZE THAT HAVING A BORDER AND POWERFUL WALL IS A GOOD THING, & HAVING VOTER I.D., ALL PAPER BALLOTS, & SAME DAY VOTING WILL QUICKLY END MASSIVE VOTER FRAUD, & TO ALL OF THOSE WEAK & PATHETIC RINOS, RADICAL LEFT DEMOCRATS, SOCIALISTS, MARXISTS, & COMMUNISTS WHO ARE KILLING OUR NATION, REMEMBER, WE WILL BE BACK!

I usually ride my age in km on my birthday but did not have time today. On my ride this morning I stopped by the beach to spend time with Anthony whom we had seen every Summer for many years. He always had a smile and something cheerful to say. We were born the same year.
